About the Book:
Can Love Transcend Time?

Thirty-year old Matthew Herrington is weary of solo nights in strange cities. He is ready for a change. And that is exactly what he gets when he steps into Swing Night at The Green Mill and is instantly immersed in the sights and sounds of another era. Intrigued by the club’s authenticity, Matthew is enchanted when he meets Patty, a mixture of sexy and sweet who steals his heart.

Patty Dennison has never met a man like Matthew in all her twenty-one years. A sophisticated man, he stands out from the usual Swing Night crowd. He is self-assured, smart, charming, and handsome as hell, even if he is a lousy dancer. Once he takes her in his arms, Patty is more than willing to give him a few dance lessons along with her heart.

Repeated missed dates and unanswered phone calls strain the relationship and frustrate the pair. But unraveling their mystery exposes an impossible scenario, one that will torment their sanity and test their love.

How can they make their fairytale last? Can love transcend time?

Excerpt:

A waitress came to take it off his hands. “Another?” she queried and he nodded agreement, placing a crumpled dollar on her tray. “Too much,” she told him shaking her head no. Matthew was surprised by her response but the tray was covered with loose change so he removed his bill and left the equivalent in quarters. Everything was so inexpensive but the server still needed to make a decent living.
She gave him a grateful smile and turned to move to her next customer, carefully balancing her tray above the heads of the young people around her. In the process, she nudged Matthew slightly causing him to lose his footing and fall gently against another body. Turning to apologize he found himself staring into the clearest, lightest blue eyes he had ever seen. He couldn’t look away.
“Sorry,” he mumbled when he finally regained his composure.
“That’s okay,” she replied with a quick, bright smile. She was lovely, in a wholesome girl next door way. She had her blond hair pulled into a ponytail that curled like a hair product ad, clear-skinned cheeks that were pink with warmth and perhaps exertion, and a curvy body displayed under a bright red sweater and a flared plaid skirt.
Matthew felt his mouth go dry and his palms get sweaty. She did something to him, this fresh faced woman that he found incredibly sexy. Her red lipstick was a slash of bright color mimicking the red of the sweater. Until this moment, bright red lipstick screamed “tough broad, stay away” to Matthew but on this girl it whispered “come hither.”
“Matthew,” he squeaked out, extending his hand to shake hers. Thinking twice about it, he retracted his arm, running his palm against his pants swiftly, and hopefully surreptitiously, before he extended his hand again.
“Patty,” she responded, placing her soft fingers in his large palm. She shook like a girl. After all the bone-breaking handshakes Matthew had endured across the globe, this limp, fingers-only shake surprised him. She looked athletic, not tough but toned, and not sickly pale like most Chicagoans in winter. The handshake didn’t match the image and normally would have bothered him. Nothing about Patty bothered him. Everything about her bothered him.

Blazing #BlogTour: The Zee Brothers #Series by Grivante #1

Author: Grivante

Narrator: Ian McEuen

Series: The Zee Brothers: Zombie Exterminators, Book 1

Length: 1 hour 55 minutes

Publisher: Grivante Press

Released: Dec. 12, 2015

Genre: Horror, Action/Adventure

The Zee Brothers suit up for their second adventure. This time answering the call from a local charter school that fears they may have an outbreak amongst their students.
The brothers find themselves trapped inside the school, with no weapons, scared children and a host of hungry and toxic undead.
They improvise with the help of the school lunch lady and a rather intelligent young student to try and stop the toxic infection from getting out of hand. The aftermath leads Jonah, Judas and JJ to a small farm on the outside of town, where they find the cause of the outbreak with mysterious links to the brother’s past.

Grivante writes sci-fi, fantasy, horror and post-apocalyptic fiction with a writing style that bounces between comedy and action-packed horror, most often mixing together to create things like Zombie Omelets and Spleen Soup.
He is best known for his Zee Brothers: Zombie Exterminator series, a comedic horror series that both celebrates and pokes fun at everything that makes zombie pop culture cool.

His publishing company Grivante Press focuses on publishing page-turning speculative fiction.

He loves things like George Romero’s “Of The Dead” movies and Robert Kirkman’s “The Walking Dead” and feels there are many authors telling those types of stories well. He’ll leave that type of story telling to them and keep focused on the weird gonzo-action filled tales he likes to write and his readers like to read!

Narrator Bio

Bred in a test tube in a far distant future, Ian is a prototype never meant for mass production. A rare genetic hybrid of opera singer, actor, narrator, rock vocalist, and electronic music producer, he travelled back in time to join forces with Earth’s last and best hope: the underpaid, under-appreciated, and oft misunderstood writers of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Since then, he has narrated over 20 audiobooks, voiced characters in video games and cartoons, and melted many a face with his powerful vocals.

Q&A with Author Grivante
  • Do you believe certain types of writing translate better into audiobook format?
    • I think that most stories translate really well into audio format. If the narrator captures the feel of the characters a lot of things that might distract you while reading a story fall away and you can just follow along on whatever adventure is being told to you. For me, it makes it a lot easier to enjoy.
  • Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
    • Absolutely. I’ve listened to audiobooks most of my adult life and it’s how I do the bulk of my reading, so I always knew that audio was a part of the plan. I love audiobooks.
  • How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process?
    • Ian and I worked very closely at first, getting the basics of the characters and their nuances figured out. He did some samples and then I let him loose.
  • Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
    • Yes, there were a few areas we had to discuss, one of which was the proper pronunciation of the word Shibari.
  • Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
    • Oh yes. As crazy as it may seem given some of the things I write about, there is a lot of my real life in there in different ways. Two moments in particular in the first book, Curse of the Zombie Omelet, we’re born from moments on road trips with my wife. The first, a little something involving chocolate and the second when we were at a small gas station in the middle of the night and she asked me about where the dog Xanadu came from. I looked up, saw a small storage facility in the background and his origin just flowed right out of me and became a part of the story. There are lots of other big and small events that are a piece of my tales, even the magic bits.
  • How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
    • That’s a good question. I write slow primarily because of limited time. I rarely have time to get burnt out from writing, but I often get burnt out from the business side of writing. Marketing, planning, networking, cons. It seems those activities occupy a lot more time than writing does. I’ve reached a stage now where I recognize what I can and can’t do and am slowly eliminating excess activities so that I can focus more on writing. That’s going to be what keeps me sane! I do notice though that when I’m not writing, it’s usually because I needed to recharge my ideas anyway. Sometimes, it’s because the universe needs me to see something(such as the storage unit mentioned above) before I can continue with a story.
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
    • Yes, absolutely. I am in my car a lot, so being able to listen to stories has been a part of my life for over twenty years. Because of audio I listen to books that I would never take the time to read. Sherlock Holmes? Loved listening to all of them. Pride and Prejudice? Yep, dug it. Crime and Punishment, fascinating! It’s also good for books where the story gets boring for a bit, you can just let it run in the background until it catches your interest again, whereas if you are reading it, you may put it down and never pick it back up again. Stephen King as much as I love his work, has a tendency to go off on tangents that don’t move the story forward and if it wasn’t for audio I don’t know if I would have enjoyed some of his tales quite as much as I do.
  • Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format?
    • Because of the format we were able to add some things in that really add to the listening experience. Xanadu is a dog and also plays a key role in the series. Part of that involves a magical disco imbued power… yeah…, that’s right I said disco power, and during the story, especially in the first book there are a few occasions where that power is used. We were able to add in a disco beat that really surprises listeners and adds to the experience of listening to it.
  • If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go?
    • Yes, but I think I would ultimately go mad. First, I’d want to go see events that happened to get a better understanding of the truth. Who shot JFK? Where did the pyramids come from? Why did I let that cute girl walk past me without saying hi in the 10th grade?(lol) But, ultimately I think the ability would lead to too many paradoxes in my own life and I’d eventually just explode from conflict.
  • In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series?
    • In a stand-alone the story has a clear ending and is often more succinct in my opinion. It has more power, but readers are often left wanting more, which is both good and bad. In a series, I feel authors can get trapped not knowing when to wrap something up because they are trying to stretch an idea out longer than it should run, but we often forgive these things as readers because we don’t want to let the characters go.
  • Have any of your characters ever appeared in your dreams?
    • Oh yes. I once had a shark in a fine tailored suit holding a pool cue appear in a dream. Pool-Shark…, but he also became a major villian in a fantasy series I have cooking.
  • What’s next for you?
    • I’m hard at work on book 3 of The Zee Brothers and currently exploring or plotting multiple ideas for future series, some zombie, some not. I plan to wrap up book 3 and 4 of the Zombie Exterminator’s series before starting any new full projects. For right now, I am allowing myself to brainstorm other ideas as they come up, but filing them away until I’m ready to choose which one gets the next several years of my life devoted to it.
Oh and I also just released a mini comic book set in The Zee Brothers Universe, it explores the main villain and one of her experiments on zombies. Check out Zombie Buffet.

Blazing #BlogTour: The Soulweaver by Heidi Catherine

The Soulweaver
Heidi Catherine
Publication date: January 19th 2018
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Romance

She’s loved and lost him a hundred times across a thousand years. She can’t bear to lose him again.

Lin’s dreams are haunted by faces of people she’s never met. Unable to shake the feeling she’s lived before, she’s drawn to Reinier—a stranger whose soul is heartbreakingly familiar from a time gone by.

Reinier helps Lin unravel the mystery of her past life as Hannah, a girl who sacrificed herself for her true love, Matthew. As Lin falls hopelessly in love with Reinier, her memories of her life as Hannah sharpen and she finds herself unable to let go of Matthew.

With her heart torn in two, Lin must decide whether she should stand by Reinier’s side or track down Matthew and fight for his love. What she doesn’t know is that her decision will ripple across our troubled planet, affecting far more lives than just her own.

Winner of Romance Writers of Australia’s Emerald Pro award, The Soulweaver is a story that will change the way you see the world.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble

Excerpt:

Lin looked out across the forest from her bedroom window, balancing her tiny frame on a stool. A possum scurried down the branch of a tree, making her laugh. She noticed the way the light fell on the highest branches, illuminating the leaves like torches. Other branches hung low with the weight of brightly coloured flowers that had burst into life, and small birds hopped along the forest floor searching for food to feed their young.

There was an abundance of beauty in nature. Lin felt so much a part of the forest, she was sure she must have roots of her own that had threaded their way deep into the earth.

‘You’ll wear out your legs standing on that stool,’ her father would tell her.

‘I’m watching over my forest, Ah-ba,’ she’d say.

‘Your forest is ugly.’ He’d smile, anticipating her response.

‘You are ugly.’

Her father would then lift her from the stool and tickle her until her sides ached from laughter.

Lin was born in Kowloon, Hong Kong, the only child of hardworking parents who ran a convenience store on one of the city’s many busy streets. They lived in an apartment building and from her bedroom window she had a view that unfolded for miles.

As a young girl, she thought of her city as a forest. The buildings were her trees. The colourful clothes on the washing lines that ringed the buildings were her flowers. The horns from the traffic were birds calling to each other, and she imagined the people below to be possums or wombats or wallabies. Her imagination supplied her with the view she longed to see and she’d spend hours staring out, lost in a world of her own creation.

She tried to share this world with her father, but where she saw a forest he saw the land for what it was – a city studded with concrete columns of life, stretching high into the sky.

As she grew older, her legs grew longer and she no longer needed the stool. She’d press her nose to the window and stare at her city. She noticed how people’s eyes remained focused on life at ground level, yet most of it was happening above their heads. Through the thin walls of her family’s apartment she could hear talking, laughing, crying and shouting. All evidence of lives being lived, relationships being forged and people growing and changing.

As she watched the people go about their day, she’d wonder why she felt she didn’t belong. The pages of her sketchpad were filled with drawings of a forest she’d never seen and faces of people she’d never met. When she slept, she dreamt of bright lights, dark skies and a woman with golden hair. She’d wake, confused and sad. Did everyone dream like this?

Author Bio:

Heidi’s debut novel, The Soulweaver, won Romance Writers of Australia’s Emerald Pro award and will be released by Crooked Cat Books on 19 Jan 2018.

Not being able to decide if she prefers living in Melbourne or the Mornington Peninsula, Heidi shares her time between both places. She is similarly pulled in opposing directions by her two sons and two dogs, remaining thankful she only has one husband.

“We aren’t going anywhere with your creepy smiling ass. Thanks for the offer, but we have better things to do. Like fight these crazy mantis things. So, if you don’t mind, step off, or I’ll throw you another beating,” Adal offered as he took a half step ahead of Arija who yanked at his sleeve.
“What the hell are you doing? If I couldn’t take him, you sure as hell can’t! Not in your condition anyway.” Arija slid her hand down Adal’s side to where his empty holster sat on his hip. “Where’s your gun?” she mumbled out of the side of her mouth.
“I don’t know. It went flying when I did. I’m going to make my move. You make yours!” Adal mumbled back, keeping his eyes trained on his opponent. With his little finger, Adal motioned to the two knives on the platform.
“So, what’s the plan, shiny? We gonna do this, or are you going to just stand there and look at me? I mean, I know I’m pretty, but damn,” Adal said, the humor gone from his voice. The Dweller’s grin faded and his mouth thinned. He closed his robotic hands into fists and lowered his head to his shoulders.
“If you think it’s in your best interest, Topsider, please feel free to try your odds. I will greatly enjoy peeling back your skin and seeing what your wet insides look like. When I’m done with you, your mate is next!” he said, flicking his gaze toward Arija.
Arija flinched at the word “mate.” She wasn’t even Adal’s girlfriend, for reasons she didn’t exactly understand, and the word brought a sudden embarrassment to her cheeks.
Adal’s upper lip twitched as he watched him eye Arija like she was a prize at the fair. His face burned, and his palms got sweaty at the thought of this man with Arija, torturing her or . . . whatever else he had in mind. Adal was ready to put his fist down this asshole’s throat.

LIBERTY
Crystal Falls, Michigan is a tiny town in the upper peninsula with about fifteen hundred people on a good day. It’s really just a dot in the rearview mirror. My mom, hoping for a better life and a fresh start, moved us up here when I was four. But all it gave us was heartache and anguish. She sold everything we had to be with a man we’d never met only be end up rejected, stranded, and homeless. If it weren’t for Grandma Rose, who knows what would have happened to us. She was our saving grace. Mom and I had been living in our car and had gone into the truck stop to take a shower. She found me digging through the trash for something to eat; it had been almost two days since we’d had any food. This woman took one look at me and opened her heart and home while giving my mom a job and becoming our family. Her diner, Rosebud’s, was left to us when she passed about ten years ago. My mother ran it until she got sick during my senior year in college. I had no idea she had cancer until I saw her at graduation. She was so pale and frail, I thought she was going to break. After we lost her, I was told she wouldn’t allow anyone to tell me she was sick until after I had finished school. She knew I would’ve come home without my degree.
Out of guilt and grief, I’ve kept their memories alive and continued to run the diner, but it’s gotten harder and harder to keep this place going. The lack of tourists has turned Crystal Falls into a ghost town. Truckers traveling from Wisconsin to Michigan don’t even stop here anymore. As much as I love and miss them, there’s nothing left for me here. So, as I flip the open sign to “closed,” I have a bittersweet feeling. I’m closing a legacy as I shut off the lights and lock the doors to an end of an era. With tears running down my face, I pull out of the parking lot and toward the highway. Heading south, I glance in the rearview mirror one last time. I’m petrified at what lies ahead, but I’m excited to get there.

Excerpt from Chapter 8 – Converge

“We’re not going anywhere with you,” I spat. I purposefully made my tone caustic and much to my dismay, Archer bent down in front of me until his very serious face was only inches from mine.

“You don’t have much choice in the matter, Miss…”

“Mia.”

“You don’t have much choice in the matter, Mia,” he said softly, keying in on my name. He tilted his head to one side before he continued. “I’m sure you’ve noticed the woods are full of things that go bump in the night and whoever is tracking you, because you are being tracked, will most likely find you before the day ends. I’d say traveling with us is your only option for staying alive. Now if you choose not to travel with us, I wish you luck with the drones that will surely capture and most likely kill you within minutes.” He backed away and regarded me coolly. “So, what will it be?”

“One minute Archer,” Ben barked.

I scanned the woods, but didn’t see anything. The guards had pulled their bows taught. Every arrow was pointed directly over my head. The youngest one, Troy, glanced at me as if I was senseless…as if I were an exotic animal that didn’t understand the dangers of this land. And then I heard it. An eerie hum. It drifted like an omen through the trees. Instinctively, I knew something dangerous was approaching. Ezra gaped at me, her eyes growing wider by the second. Without a doubt, she had heard this sound before and knew to be afraid, but I still couldn’t move.

“I did not leave my compound to be dictated to.”

The tiniest of smiles tipped his lips. “Ah, it’s choice you want.”

I glared at him. The smug bastard.

“Then here’s a choice: live or die.” Archer stated it as a fact, holding his hand out to me. His voice was calm – unbearably so.

“What?” I gasped.

“Live or die. It’s a choice. Isn’t that what you wanted?”

It really wasn’t a choice, and he knew it. But what really irked me was he didn’t seem to care. If I chose to stay on the ground, he would just leave me in the woods without a second thought. The buzzing grew louder and yet, even as the other men backed away, Archer did not move. In fact, his smirk grew wider.

About the Author

a.k. downing.jpgA.K. Downing’s young-adult novel, Into the Air, is a 2017 National Indie Excellence Award Finalist. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the story follows the adventure of teenager Mia Bryn as she leaves the safety of her underground compound and tries to survive in a world no one has inhabited for more than a hundred years.

Growing up in the hills of southwestern Pennsylvania, Aimee spent her summers exploring the fields, woods, and orchards of her grandparents’ farm. She was inspired by prepper shows and survivalist websites to create a story that weaves together the best aspects of young adult fiction – adventure, teenage angst, and a hint of romance.

Aimee studied graphic design at Kent State University and currently works as a Creative Director. She enjoys history and camping and feels there is no better way to see the world than from the top of a horse.
