Blazing #BlogTour: Celtic Fire by Liz Gavin

Celtic Fire
Liz Gavin
(Highland Celts Series, #1)
Publication date: January 31st 2017
Genres: Adult, Historical, Paranormal Romance

This is a standalone, historical/paranormal romance. Its mature themes – violence, religious war, and pagan rituals – might not be appropriate for audiences under 18.

When ancient gods ruled and Druids kept Faith alive, the Celts thrived as a democratic, matriarchal society. Then savage Roman soldiers swept across Europe, killing and enslaving. The Celts did not succumb without a fight. Their Old Ways survived centuries of ruthless domain until another menace loomed: a tortured god worshiped in cold stone buildings. The sacred shores of Avalon began to drift away, the mists threatened to hide the island from mortal eyes forever.

Against the bleak backdrop of war, the gorgeous Scottish Highlands stood tall, sheltering its inhabitants from greedy invaders. Yet the reach of the eagle banners was long and the highlanders turned to the Goddess for protection. However, the sacred groves felt silent and grim as Avalon faded away. Once sad, pealing bells began to sound strangely comforting while the high walls of monasteries offered an alluring barrier from violence. Caught in the middle of this centuries-old war, a young High Priestess might be Avalon’s last chance.

Wise beyond her years and powerful like no other Priestess in her lifetime, Rowen had served the Goddess faithfully, forsaking her family and the company of her soulmate. When the Lady of the Lake asks for another sacrifice, it might be one too many for her scarred heart. How could she obey the Goddess without betraying Caddaric? Could she trust Eochaid, who embodied everything she despised and hated? Would she be able to fulfill her duties without losing her soul?

Caddaric had been Rowen’s companion in countless lives; but, now, they existed in different realms. Beautiful Rowen lived in the mortal world while sweet Caddaric remained in the sacred isle of Avalon, watching over her. Could he step aside to allow another man – a flesh and blood man – to become her protector?

Eochaid had sworn to protect the Old Ways. The rude warrior never quite understood his faith yet his loyal heart belonged to the Goddess. A gorgeous, fiery High Priestess was not in his plans. He would risk his life to protect Rowen; but, would the Goddess safeguard his heart? Could he defend the bewitching maiden from himself?

When stakes were so high that a simple mistake could cost their very world, a priestess, a Druid, and a warrior must learn to trust each other and the mysterious ways of the Goddess. Their success would save Avalon. Their failure would tear the island from the human realm forever, condemning it to oblivion.

Failure was not an option.

Caddaric

Night falls in the material realm, tearing the veil between the worlds and allowing me to reach Rowen’s house. Even though I feel like a criminal hiding from other human eyes, I reckon it’s wise to avoid being seen by the villagers. They’re faithful to the Goddess yet they don’t have the Sight, or knowledge, to understand how the spiritual world coexists with the material plane so they might get scared. As soon as the chants around the Samhain bonfire decrease in intensity, Rowen comes inside looking for me. She doesn’t need to search for long.

“I’ve missed you!” she whispers as her arms snake around my waist and I hold her close to me.

Inhaling her scent as sweet as the apple blossoms in Avalon, I kiss her forehead, “So have I.”

We sit in front of the fire pit, which will keep us warm during the cold October night. Her soft arm around my waist, her head on my shoulder.

“This isn’t fair. This world seems to have only one moment set aside for us instead of the eternity I’d like to share with you.”

“Your time in this plane unfolds faster than that in Avalon so it’s your impression; but, it isn’t necessarily so,” Rowen pouts and I can’t avoid chuckling at her childish reaction. I caress her lower lip with a thumb and whisper. “So unbefitting a High Priestess.”

I watch her fighting back a smile until she loses the battle, “Don’t mock me, Caddaric Seagha. It’s so lonely on this earth without you.”

Choosing not to engage in this old argument, because it’s pointless, I run my fingers through her red curls and stare into the dying fire, summoning courage to deny the request she’s about to make. I don’t need the Sight to know she’s going to ask me what she does on every sacred festival.

“Caddaric, will you lie with me?”

“You know we shouldn’t.”

“I’m not asking you to make love to me. I just wish to feel your arms around me like we used to do in past lives.”

“That I can do. I’m glad you’ve finally resigned yourself to our new roles in this life. Although the sacred days allow me an easier passage to your realm, my body doesn’t have the same desires as a human body does.”

Feeling her shiver against me, I tighten my hold and rub her arms to keep the chill away.

“I know that. It’s just that I sometimes feel as if we’ve been tricked into accepting our separation, like we had no say in that and it’s all been decided for us.”

“To some extent, it’s been the case. However, it’s the Goddess who has made the decision. She’s All-wise and All-knowing. Whatever her plans, they’re the best for us. Everything will be fine in the end.”

A heartfelt sigh indicates Rowen acknowledges my argument, despite the fact she might not agree with it. Kissing the top of her head, I pull her closer. I might not have carnal desires for her any longer, but the strong connection between us, which has been built throughout multiple past lives, warms up my chest, enveloping us in a cocoon of harmony and joy.

Blazing #BlogTour: Alex: Perfect Opposite by Zoya Tessi

ALEX: Perfect Opposite Book One (Extended edition)
Zoya Tessi
Publication date: January 23rd 2017
Genres: New Adult, Romance

Their wishes were simple and modest. Fate had other things in store though, and she can be a real bitch sometimes.

All he wanted was to get the job done and somehow to endure those long months playing nanny to a spoiled little rich girl. Without strangling her with his bare hands in the process. Well, it is going to be much easier said than done.

All she wanted was to escape the past and live like any other girl. Her plan definitely didn’t include the arrogant, tattooed savage, with his awful mohawk and lack of social graces, whose only mission was to stick real close and mess up her life.

But, people aren’t always what they seem to be, are they?

Sasha

I went to the kitchen and took some bread out of the cupboard, reached over for a tub of jelly on the countertop and froze. The next moment, before I could catch it in my throat, I let out a loud, high-pitched scream.

There, near my hand, was the biggest cockroach I’d ever seen. It didn’t seem to be going anywhere, either.

Hearing footsteps from behind me, I turned and almost screamed for a second time. With a knife gripped in one hand, Alex was poised in the doorway, ready to attack and looking mean. The pose didn’t hold for long, maybe only a fraction of a second after he realized there wasn’t any danger, and then all his muscles relaxed at once.

“What the fuck was that for?”

“I… I was hungry, and I saw…”

I felt ashamed when I realized I’d acted like such a sissy over a bug. With a hangdog expression, I regarded Alex in silence for a few moments, while he stood waiting for an answer.

“A cockroach.”

“What?” he asked in disbelief.

“A cockroach. A big ugly black one.” I bent my head and pointed my finger over to the sink.

“A bug? Jesus! I’d thought they’d come for you or some shit.”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to get you in here, but… since you are, can you kill it? I mean, you’re here now…”

He cursed loudly and raised one arm, then brought it down fiercely, sending something whistling through the air towards me, its progress ending in a sharp snap. I jerked reflexively and looked in his direction to find that he wasn’t moving anymore. Turning back to the cockroach, I saw his slick knife buried first through the bug and then into the counter.

Approaching in a hurry, Alex pulled it out by the handle, complete with the bug, which he scraped off on the rim of the trashcan. After that, offering no further explanations he just left the room, weapon in hand. With my mouth open in disbelief, I could only stare at the mark on the surface where the roach had been. I stood for a full five minutes like that.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

Excerpt:

His hand slides up my nape and grips the back of my head, my hair getting twisted and knotted in his fingers. My mouth instinctively parts. I’m kissing his breath with mine. Our air is touching; his eyes are touching me. Everything is so close and tangled … except our lips.

Why isn’t he kissing me? His hands are holding me strong and tense, his muscles clenching around my body. His gaze is seducing my insides. He’s waiting. Making sure I’m ready for him.

I am. I’m so ready.
I dive into his mouth, as if it’s my next breath. – Chapter 20

Author Bio:

Erin Lockwood grew up in Castro Valley, California and attended the University of Oregon, where she graduated in 2003 with a degree in journalism. From there she moved to Denver and spent the next seven years searching for the love of her life and building the family of her dreams.

It wasn’t long until, with children starting preschool and more time on her hands, Erin refocused on her career, beginning with a successful entry into the world of residential real estate as a Realtor. Free time was spent reading book after book (and binge-watching the subsequent films) in the New Adult genre. Feeling hopelessly in love with her husband, she wrote him a short story leading up to their fifth wedding anniversary. That’s when she discovered her tireless passion to share her experience of falling in love through fictional characters. That story evolved into the first novel in the Angles trilogy.

Erin still lives in Denver, Colorado with her husband, Phil, and their three children.

My Review:

So I’ve already read book one and two for this series and I’m loving it. Getting this little glimpse of Mani was AWESOME!!! Evening knowing what was to come, it pulled me in. We get more understanding about his relationship with his sister Solina and how close they really were. We also get to see the budding romance between Mani and Skyla which was really quite adorable. This is a definite must read but I do suggest you start here instead with book one. It doesn’t really give any detail as to what is to come but will leave you wanting more!

The Ashes and the Sparks Guest Post

Alternate History (about the “rules” and “limits” when writing Alt Hist)

As with most genres, althistory begins with one question: what if? What if Rome never fell? What if the Nazis won World War II? What if the Dark Ages turned into a period of great scientific advancement, or what if dragons really did exist in Ancient China? The possibilities are infinite, which is part of what makes the alternate history such a fascinating topic to explore. My novel takes place in the 1880’s, a period that many would recognize as Victorian. There’s just one key difference: Queen Victoria is dead. Gone. Assassinated. And when you remove such key players, society obviously develops far differently from what happened in our timeline. Really, that’s the core of what althistory is: creating a new, ‘alternate’ timelines.

Few writers enjoy the idea of rules and limits, and as far as genre boundaries go, alternate history offers lots of flexibility. You want the fairies of Irish folktales to be real? Sure. You want massive, gilded airships to be Europe’s primary mode of transportation? Go for it. You want Da Vinci and Michelangelo to be rival vampire-hunting vigilantes? Why not! Time travel, steampunk, and post-apocalyptic dystopias are all totally reasonable subgenres to delve into, but you’ve got to remember to keep the ‘history’ part too. You’ve got to remember that Earth –real Earth- has got to be the basic setting. Even if the magical land of Altoria mimics 3rd century Peru, if there are no connections to reality, then you’re writing straight-up fantasy. There has to be a connection to the real historical timeline. Of course, liberties can be taken; The Ashes and the Sparks involves a completely fictional society based on a mishmash of real Nordic cultures, set on a completely fictional archipelago of islands. But since it’s still set in this universe, with connections to other, real countries, it’s a go.

Another point to remember, is that usually, you only want to shift one major event. It gets way too confusing if the Spanish Armada successfully conquers Britain, leading to a chain of events that make them win the American Revolutionary War, but then a plague wipes out the entire country, so the moon landing never happens, so….lost? Exactly. Keep it simple; it’s amazing how a single event can create a massive ripple effect. Also, don’t leave plot holes. Since you are dealing with real history, your timeline shift has to be somewhat feasible. Nothing irritates readers more than logic jumps.

So go ahead: assemble all your outbreaks and assassinations, and give the past a twist! Set your chain of events in motion.

My Review:

To me this story was pretty funny since I remember what it’s like to be young and inexperienced. As soon as I read the blurb I knew exactly what might happen, and I wasn’t wrong. But even having some idea of what was to come I couldn’t put it down. The characters were written so well that at times I forgot that this was fiction. It truly felt like I was there and I thought about looking up the vlog a few times. Thankfully I remembered that it was fiction before actually doing it. I totally blame the writing and not my ditziness (I have my moments, I know lol). Although I do feel that I’ve lost some friends by finishing this, it was still a fun read.

CHAPTER THREE

Sydney and Noella walked hand in hand along the small winding path leading to the top the Mount Dothan. The dusking sky painted a sheet of orange and red light across the woodsy terrain around them, giving the impression of wading through a sea of fire. Amid the grim moment of the day and the burning sensation rising in Sydney’s throat, the tone seemed fitting. Silence accompanied them, and it wasn’t until the pair hit the peak that Sydney finally broke the ice. “So what do your people call this ceremony?” she asked.

“The time of the harvest. It’s the moment when a fallen soldier is said to join the being of the sky. I think humans refer to it as God,” Noella said, her tone as flat as the expression on her face.

“Sounds cool,” she replied as she surveyed the surroundings; a patch of flatland that housed a family of hawks who watched cautiously from above in a lone cedar tree. From here, every inch of Madisonburg could be observed without the need of telescope or binoculars. A bed of dandelions and weeping willows greeted them in the center of the field.

“This way. I’ll show you where I buried his body,” Noella said.

She could see that Noella was visibly shaken, slowly unravelling before her eyes. Her hands trembled as her eyes began to redden. She wondered how long it’d take, amazed at how Noella had not said a word since Arrion’s death a few weeks ago, only morning him in silence, which she explained was customary on Fabricius. She had done the deed all by herself, refusing to allow Sydney to assist in his burial. From scouting the plot of land to digging the hole, Noella insisted that it was protocol on her planet for a lone fellow soldier to be assigned the arduous task of preparation. Seeing as though William had departed soon after, there was no better candidate left for the job.

She took Noella by the hand and drew her close, giving her the most delicate and firm hug she could muster. Noella stood motionless, sinking into her friend’s embrace. After a few seconds, she released her, unable to make eye contact. “I’m here for you,” she murmured.

“Thanks, Syd,” Noella replied, her voice ragged.

She finally looked up at her and gave a nod, following Noella’s lead over to the place where Arrion’s body lay. Surprisingly, the disturbed clay seemed more settled than she expected, dried from the sun and already showing signs of life as Bermuda grass had slowly began to encroach along the edges. A makeshift tombstone had been erected, fashioned from metallic fuselage scraps of the Daedallus, with only Arrrion’s name and handle tatted along the surface, minus dates to hide his identity to hikers in hopes that most consider it a memorial to a lost pet if they stumbled upon it.

Noella knelt next to the grave, slid her backpack from her shoulders and began to open it. Searching her bag, she retrieved a small oval-shaped disk and a satchel filled with purple powder. “These are crushed lilacs pedals. We must first prepare the path for Arrion’s ascension by sending tribute to the sky.” She stood and sprinkled a few handfuls over the grave until a thin layer had materialized before them. “On our planet we usually use the oil of a Tonosia Tree, which is a lot thicker substance and is used for sterilization. Sarah thought it’d be a good idea to use lilacs as a substitute because it was a similar color.”

“It’s beautiful,” she replied.

“I will now begin the ceremony.” Noella placed the disc in the center of the burial site, depressed a red button on the top and came to her side. The two joined hands as the disc began to spin and dig into the hardened clay. Noella pointed a hydrogen phaser at the site and fired a stream of fire upon it that scorched the sheet of crushed pedals. The disc disappeared beneath the flames and Noella broke out into song, in an alien dialect that Sydney could not understand. It was less about the words and more the moment that choked at her, forcing the tears to flow freely down her face. She squeezed Noella’s hand as she crooned on. By the time Noella had finished, a small fissure had opened in the place where the disc had entered and a cloud of embers swirled into the air; a mix of red, orange and yellow. It lifted high into the sky and faded into the clouds.

Noella dropped to her knees in a whimper. “It is finished.”

Sydney came beside her and held her close. “It was… beautiful.”

The two sat in silence with only sobs to drown out the sounds of the forest.

Lucci Grimley is indeed alluring—crowned with a mane of long blond hair, and blessed with an enchanting musical talent that draws a brave rescuer to a high tower hidden in the forest.

However, this modern-day Rapunzel is a young man, sold as a child to the wealthy and childless Damien Gotham for the price of a fast car and a pile of cash. And Lucci’s heroic prince is William “Prin” Prinzing, a handsome college student and star soccer player, hired to care for the grounds of the lavish Tower Estate. Prin climbs an extension ladder rather than a long golden braid to gain access to Lucci’s second floor bedroom window, ultimately penetrating the secrecy surrounding the cloistered young man.

Friendship, and soon romance, blooms. The tower captive eagerly gives his loving innocence to his brave rescuer, which sends the strict and reclusive Gotham into a frenzy of jealous rage. With Prin, Lucci gets a taste of real life, and he wants more. Together, the young men must face Gotham’s ruthlessness and pay the price of liberating Lucci.

Author Interview:

Hello, and thank you so much for welcoming me to your blog today. I am so thrilled to be here to celebrate my new release, a New Adult M/M fairy modern tale retelling, called In A Gilded Cage by Mia Kerick.

Have you ever played your life through your mind like a movie, but quicker? I did, in an effort to determine the events in my life that have shaped who I am. What I realized as I did this, was that it wasn’t single events that shaped my life, as much it was “event themes” that molded me into the person I am, and in turn, have affected my writing.

The Interview

What aspects of life have shaped you as a person?

  1. Romance Theme-Over the summer when I was about ten, I remember being at the beach and watching couples stroll along the shore hand-in-hand. When they waded into the water and wrapped their arms around each other, I just knew I wanted what they had. And since I wasn’t old enough to actually have that for myself, I started creating “families” with pictures of young men and children cut out from my mother’s magazines. And I started to write my earliest romance stories. So the concept behind the romance theme in my life was introduced as a child through what I saw around me and shaped my life.
  1. Teaching/Job Theme– Realizing that I could actually do what I was trained to do, and the sense of accomplishment I felt as a result, was an empowerment that gave me confidence and shaped me. It was difficult—one of the most difficult things I’d ever done—to face 100 squirming seventh graders in the classroom five days a week. I had to challenge them and interest them and earn their respect and show them compassion. And to top it off, there was all of the paperwork that went with it. But getting the job in the first place, being creative with lesson plans and successfully implementing them, was something I could do. That is a feeling that shapes you.
  1. Intimate Relationships Theme-I think this theme of my life has shaped me more than any of the others. From a young age I wanted to have a boyfriend, and as I grew older I longed to have a partner with whom I could share my life. I’m just programmed this way, I guess. But the places my search for romance took me were what shaped me the most—the negative relationships in which I sought security and couldn’t find it, the boyfriends who wanted only one thing from me and did whatever it took to earn enough trust to get it, some relationships in which there was emotional abuse that I tolerated so I didn’t have to be alone. And then the relief and release I experienced upon meeting the man I married and how my comfort and security with him shaped me in a different way. I still dream of being alone and looking for the desired partner to complete my life. I hope that by now I have been shaped enough to never have to go through some of what I endured again.
  1. Pregnancy and Children Theme– Strangely, where I was rather obsessed by the notion of having a person with whom to share my life, I was not obsessed with the idea of having children—until I was married for one year and then this urge started to mold me. I suddenly HAD to have a child with my husband. It was a desire so strong that like the other desires in my life it became a life-shaper. And after a miscarriage that further convinced me I needed to be a mother, I become pregnant, had a baby, and was faced with motherhood. At first I was honestly afraid to be alone with baby number one. Terrified, even. But just like I’d done with teaching job, I dove right in and did what needed to be done. And the realization that this job was a 24/7 job that no one else could do but me, made me grow up. Motherhood also drew out characteristics I didn’t recognize, like protectiveness and empathy as well as the inability to be happy myself without seeing the smiles on my four kids’ faces. Motherhood shaped me to be a braver, more confident and selfless person.
  1. Adoption Theme– My son’s adoption was an event that changed me greatly. I think it was the “taking a leap” aspect of adopting that made me grow the most. You never know what is instore for you in life, and when you give birth to a child you take whatever God gives you. Adoption is a very deliberate choice. You are choosing to love as your own a virtual stranger, and to do so from the moment he is placed into your arms. This decision took soul searching, as we were parents of three biological children already, and the decision was not just about us. I learned of the huge capacity our human hearts have for love. I loved my son from the day I saw his picture. I loved him before that day, when I didn’t know who he was going to be, and I wrote a journal dedicated to “little one” my someday baby from South Korea. Meeting other adoptive families and being exposed to the openness of hearts, further opened mine.
  1. Writing Career Theme-The development of my professional writing career has factored largely into making me the woman I am. At first I had to allow the creativity to flow, and then I had to let it be judged. Was what was in my heart “good enough” to be put into print so others could take it into their hearts? A terrifying concept. I then had to place it before the public and let it be judged by anyone and everyone. I had to accept the criticisms along with the praise. I had to bare myself to the world, in many sense. And it was scary and thrilling and empowering and I have done it sixteen times. So I think it has shaped me in a positive manner and into a more creative, open minded, tuned-in person. Realizing success had actually molded me into a more optimistic person, as well.
  1. Death of People I Love Them -There is no doubt that losing people who you love to death causes you to change profoundly. About fifteen years ago I lost my father, and with him, there was an enormous battle in my soul about what I was going to believe in terms of heaven… is there anything beyond this life? His death forced me to face a reality: life ends. And it forced me to deal with this. When my mother passed away this summer, I had new issues to deal with. I was very close to her, so there was a loss of a person I spoke to every day. I felt I had to step up and be strong for my her as well as my children. I had to again face my issues involving my faith and question whether there is an afterlife, which I truly do believe in. And prior to this, I had to stand beside her as she dealt with eight years of intermittent suffering due to her illness before her death. All of these responsibilities and questions and deep emotions are what has shaped me into more of who I am today.
  1. My calling to increase and protect the human rights of everyone everywhere– The election of Donald Trump for the presidency of the United States has shocked and dismayed me. In doing so, it is molding me by solidifying my calling to fight for the rights of all people—by preserving marital rights, creating immigration reform to allow those who have been living in the USA as productive citizens to stay and not separating families, not instituting religious discrimination, preserving women’s and minority rights, helping to house the world’s refugees—among other important human rights issues.

How do these life themes relate to your new release, In A Gilded Cage?

Prin and Luccihave also experienced life-shaping events. In my new releaseIn A Gilded Cage, we as readers experience the aftermath of a painful event in Lucci’s childhood that results in him living a twisted life with his selfish and cruel guardian.  For years, Lucci suffers, without ever realizing that he is suffering. Prin discovers him and shows him beauty of the world from which he is secluded. In coping with the extremes of his life, Lucci’s personality is shaped. The eventual loss of Lucci from Prin’s life causes him to struggle, to grieve, and to grow. The experience shapes his values. Enduring happy times and love, as well as suffering loss, shape the two young men into becoming the characters we can love.

Life-changing events can carry with them happiness or sorrow, gains or losses, joy or devastation. Without experiencing them, though, we would not be who we are today.

Author Bio:

Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—all named after saints—and five nonpedigreed cats—all named after the next best thing to saints, Boston Red Sox players. Her husband of twenty years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about that, as it is a sensitive subject.

Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled young men and their relationships, and she believes that sex has a place in a love story, but not until it is firmly established as a love story. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with romantic tales of tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She is thankful to Dreamspinner Press for providing her with an alternate place to stash her stories.

Mia is proud of her involvement with the Human Rights Campaign and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of marital equality. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.
