by Melanie Hooyenga
Genre: YA Sports Romance
Release Date: February 24th 2017

Summary from Goodreads:

Fifteen-year old Cally accepted her fate as one of the guys, so when she meets Blake, a hot snowboarder who sees her for more than her aerials on the slopes, she falls fast and hard. But their romance can only last as long as vacation.

Or so she thinks.

A twist of fate—well, her Dad opening another brewery in a new town—lands her in Blake’s school, but the charismatic boy she fell for wants nothing to do with her, and worse, the Snow Bunnies, the popular clique, claim her as their newest recruit.

Cally must learn to be true to herself—all while landing a spot on the ski team and figuring out who she is without her old friends. And when she finds out what Blake is hiding, she learns the rules on the slopes apply to more than just skiing.

I double check that Blake is still in line for hot chocolate, then whip out my phone and fire off a text to Sophia. Found a hottie. Made contact.

My good knee bounces in time to my heart, which hasn’t settled since Blake deposited me in a chair near the fireplace and pulled off his helmet, revealing shaggy brown hair that falls just above his crazy-blue eyes. The image in my head of us sipping hot chocolate next to the fire is beyond corny, but who am I to argue when they were the only open chairs.

My phone vibrates. Spill.

Major wipeout. He came to my rescue. Carried me into the lodge.

I check his progress in line and shake my head. What universe have I landed in where the hottest guy here—and the nicest, and not to mention a kickass boarder—is trying to impress me? It’s not like I’m not interested in boys, but I’ve always been so focused on skiing that by middle school I wedged myself in as one of the guys and now it’s too late to change it. The few dates I’ve been on were with boys outside my circle and they always get scared off once they meet my pack of friends and see how protective they are of me.

And you’re having his babies when?

I snort just as Blake sits in the chair next to me. “Was it something I said?”

“Sorry! It’s my friend. She’s a little… never mind.” I tuck my phone into my coat pocket and take a Styrofoam cup from him. Our fingers graze and a little zing of electricity rockets up my arm and straight into my belly. I clear my throat, hoping he doesn’t notice that I can’t seem to speak.

He sets a bag of ice on the table, slides another chair close to me so I can prop up my leg, and sits in the chair next to me. I grab the bag and roll the ice around to break up any chunks, then plop it on my knee. I should really pull up my snowpants for the ice to help, but the bunny long underwear is staying in hibernation.

Once he’s sure I’m situated, he leans forward so his elbows are on the table and points one finger like he’s counting. “So here’s what I know. You’re one of the best trick skiers I’ve ever seen.” He points a second finger. “You’re here with your dad and…?” His head tilts as he waits for me to reply.

“Just my dad.”

He points the third finger. “And you’re gorgeous. Now this would be enough for your average snowboarding fool, but I want to know more.”

Who talks like that? I look around, expecting people to be staring, but no one’s paying attention to us. “Am I being punked?”

He furrows his brows. “What?”

“I’ve never once had anyone say something like that to me. I figure it must be a joke.”

A blush creeps up his cheeks and he pushes his hair off his forehead. “No joke. I had a lot of time to think when you were with the ski patrol dude. But I mean it. The girls at my school are too worried about their hair to put on a helmet and pull the flip you did.”

I shrug. “I guess I don’t worry about those things.”

He smiles and my belly does another somersault. “And that’s why I want to know more about you. Where are you from?”

I take a deep breath and force myself to relax. While I don’t want to fall into the friend zone with Blake, I know how to talk to guys. Pretend he’s Hunter or Sam. “I’m from Vermont. South Burlington. I’m on the ski team and wasn’t supposed to try that last trick without my coach, but the powder here is so different from back home I couldn’t resist.” I glance out the window in the direction of the scene of my crash and smile. “He’ll be happy you forced me onto the sled.”

His dimple deepens. “Right place, right time. So this is your first time in Colorado?”

I nod. “What about you?”

His smile hardens for a millisecond, but it’s back so fast I wonder if I imagined it. “I’m from Lake Tahoe. The California side.”

“Ooh, a Cali boy?”

He rolls his eyes. “We’re not all bad.”

“No, I’m intrigued. Us east coast girls don’t have too many run-ins with surfer boys.”

He bites his lower lip. “I don’t surf. I live in the mountains.”

“Oh, I figured you’re such a good snow boarder that you must surf in the summer.” He’s quiet, and I scramble for a new topic. I don’t know what made him clam up, but I can’t blow this in the first five minutes. “How long are you here for?”

The tension in his shoulders relaxes and he leans back in his chair. “‘Til Sunday.”

“Me too.” I can’t stop the goofy smile that plasters itself to my face. I met this boy less than an hour ago and I’m acting like we’re already in love. Which makes my cheeks flame even hotter.

Portrait of cute teen couple in winter clothes.

Pursued into the wild by the soldiers of Ungstah, former slave Crik and the other freed Downers encounter the magical and terrifying nature of their world. They face spectral Shepherds, man-eating Rukmush, and the ancient giants of the earth. When two of their group are captured, Crik is distraught and powerless.

Meanwhile back in the city, Durgan, former Captain of the King’s Guard who allowed Crik and his friends to escape from Ungstah, is now a Downer, one of the Branded. Amid the murmurings of an uprising among the Branded, Durgan just wants to be left alone to search for his missing son. But in the process, he discovers how dark the powers of Sulfus the king truly are. Durgan must take a stand in the coming war between the Branded and the powerful armies of Sulfus.

To kill any hope of escape for the city’s Branded, the army comes after Crik and his friends to make an example of them. The answers for Durgan, Crik and freedom for all Downers lie hidden in the dark recesses of the Northern Reaches, in the treacherous places Crik and his companions are about to enter.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble

They reached the bottom of the stairs and plunged through an open door into a dust-filled atrium. A gray sunlight flowed into the shattered windows, highlighting the smoke from the Pit that found its way in, but was unable to find its way out. Brakken pushed open the outer doors and glimpsed into a courtyard. A few Downers were scattered about. One was sitting in the corner wrapped in a porous blanket, while a few others were standing and whispering in a noonday shadow. Several more unsavory looking Downers were watching them from a balcony.

“Where are we?” asked Durgan.

“You’ll see,” said Brakken.

One behind the other, with Brakken in front, they walked through the courtyard, opened up a black walnut door, and bounded up several flights of stairs until they came to yet another door. Brakken knocked and waited. Durgan surveyed the area and knew they were not in the part of the Waste he would feel comfortable visiting without Brakken. A minute passed and Brakken knocked again. This time it opened, and standing before Durgan was a young man who looked to be about the age of seventeen. He was short, stocky, with dark hair.

“Who’s this?” asked the young man.

“I’d rather not tell you standing out here,” said Brakken.

The young man eyed Durgan up and down, and then stepped out of the way to allow them to enter. Before the young man could ask his question again, Brakken smiled and said, “This, Hegg, is Durgan, captain of the city’s watch.”

Hegg smiled at Brakken, and then glanced at Durgan. Suddenly, however, he stumbled back, his young eyes widening in recognition. “I know you!” he cried out, pointing his finger at Durgan and tripping over his own feet. “You are the captain of the city’s watch. What’d you do, Brakken? You led him right to us!”

“Oh, shut-up!” Brakken smiled, clearly enjoying the reaction. “What I meant to say is that he used to be the captain of the city’s watch. Now!” Brakken lifted up Durgan’s sleeve. “He’s a Downer. And he’s going to help us.”

“Help you?” cried Durgan. “Help you do what?”

Brakken ignored the question. “Get Koval.”

Hegg glared at Durgan out of the corner of his eye before he left, leaving Durgan and Brakken alone.

“What are you talking about?” hissed Durgan. “What is all of this? Who’s that boy? Who’s Koval?”

“Just be patient,” smiled Brakken. “I’ll let you know in a minute.”

Grabbing Brakken by the shirt, Durgan wrenched him close, but the smile never left the young man’s freckled face. “Tell me now or I’m out of here. My wife is alone in your house, defenseless. I don’t have time for these games.”

Someone behind Durgan coughed, and when he spun around, he spotted Hegg standing next to another young man. Durgan released Brakken and scowled at them.

“Who are you?” he snarled.

Brakken spread his arms wide open and grinned. “We, Durgan, are the Branded. You met Hegg. The other one is Koval. We are the beginning of your army.”

The bakery was loud with voices, laughter, and the clinking of ceramic plates and flatware.

“Welcome to the Blackberry. What can I get you?” I said to the next person in line without looking up.

“A flat white.”

At the sound of the deep, almost melodic male voice, I looked up into the dark brown smiling eyes of Riggins Feldhem and time stood still. Like literally stood still.

It was an earth-shattering moment. One of those you feel only once in a lifetime. Our eyes met. And held. His were searching and intimate and crinkled at the edges as he smiled. He studied me so intently, it took my breath away. My heart raced. The timeline of my life had somehow shifted. I felt it.

It was one of those moments I dreamed about. A chance meeting with a billionaire. A tall, dark, hot billionaire who occasionally came into the bakery. Making the dream not all that farfetched. The kind of moment that made me almost automatically reach up to pat my hair like an old lady from the fifties. And here I was without even a touch of clear lip gloss on.

Bombastic #BookBlitz: Bombshell by Kellie Hart

Kellie Hart
(Up-Close and Personal Novella, #1)
Publication date: February 9th 2017
Genres: Comedy, Erotica, Romance

Ladies, I think I speak for the majority of us on the face of the planet when I say we all have that guy who’s grown on us like a delicious fungus. You know the kind I’m talking about–maybe he is your high school teacher or best friend’s dad–some piece of man candy so hot and edible that no matter what you do, you can’t get his taste off your mind (even if you haven’t tasted him yet).

For me, that guy is my big brother’s best friend, one Fox Montgomery. Doctor. Professor. Author.

Here’s the problem though: not only is he the most gorgeous male specimen I’ve ever laid eyes on–black hair, steely grey eyes, and a lower lip you just wanna suck–he’s also a rich academic prick. AND I HATE HIM.

I hadn’t seen him in years, and when I finally did, the vision before me bought a one-way ticket to my personal pleasure town. Then, his beautiful eyes roamed all over me, and I knew–I knew!–he didn’t like what he saw.

Yeah, I’m a big girl, curvy, smooth, and round in all the right places. I’m also covered in tats, and six-inch heels are my go-to footwear. So, let me be frank about something: I’m sexy, and if I wanted a man, I’d have one.

Yet, with one look, Fox turned my years of longing and long-distance eye-f*cking into a big ole mountain of hate.

Here’s the thing, girls: hate and love are effin evil twins. And if my heart gets its way, Doctor Fox and I are going to end up participating in some very strenuous sextracurricular activities. Here’s to our chemistry getting an A+.

*This is a stand-alone novella that is the opener of the Up-Close & Personal series. It’s hilarious and dirty and raunchy and perfectly short enough to be read in a single sitting. That’s what Kellie Hart delivers: pocket-sized smut with a capital P! *wink wink* And you’ll never finish a story without a total HEA! Due to adult content, however, Kellie suggests you be 18+ before getting your kicks on Route Sexty-Six. Trust me: you wouldn’t want your kids reading this, you dirty girl, you.

Goodreads / Amazon

“OH MY GOD, JACQUE! YOU are smokin’. I’d fuck you if I had a dick,” Char, my best friend, croons from her perch on the side of my bed.

I look down to my ample bosom in the dress Char dragged me to buy after my last class let out today. Knowing me for years, she knew she couldn’t just take me to the Riverwalk and set me loose to find something I’d actually want to wear to a frat party. Instead, she’d hauled me to The Laveau Closet, my favorite little resale shop on Rue Saint Pierre. We searched the racks for at least an hour before the number I’m wearing now spoke to me. I’d slipped it on in the dressing room, and when I stepped out, Char screamed, threw her credit card at the woman helping us, and bought the dress before I could protest. I guess growing up in a life of privilege does that to you—lets you think you can buy whatever, whenever. Honestly, I would have purchased the piece myself. Of course, I would have handed over my debit card with a grimace and a thousand reasons not to do so running through my head; nothing I own is brand-new… It never has been, but Char is right. I do look amazing.

Setting hands on my hips, I turn to face my reflection one last time, and Char grins like a psychotic cat over my shoulder.

“You’re so getting laid tonight!” she squeals.

Char scoops Snots the Incontinent Chihuahua from the bed before approaching me. Sighing, she wraps her arms around me in an unsolicited hug. We hold Snots in front of us in our cupped hands, our eyes meeting in the mirror.

“But seriously, Jacque, I’m not making you do anything you don’t want to do, am I?”

I smile and pat her cheek. Then I pet Snots, too, when he whimpers for attention. My eyes move from my breasts lifted skyward in the strapless A-line dress, to my waist cinched in by a red patent belt, down to the tops of my garters I can just make out beneath the black silk hem. I look good. I feel good. And I want the fucking world to know it.

“No,” I tell Char before pecking her forehead. “I need to get my mind off of everything–exams, the fact I’m not going home for Christmas…and Fox, too. I need this. I want this.”

“Halle-fucking-lujah!” Char cheers after tossing Snots back on the bed. “It’s about damn time!”

She spins and takes my hands before dancing me around my bedroom. We giggle like the teenagers we aren’t anymore and fall on the bed in a fit of hysterics. I pity the elderly couple who live below us in our rented two-story rowhouse. My heels on the floor and, now, the squeaking of my old iron bed must sound like a herd of elephants coming through. And, as if on cue, Mrs. Lafourche beats the ceiling with her broom.

“Get the hell on out for the evenin’, girls!” her voice barks through the floor…or her ceiling. “Robert is trying to sleep off the whiskey!”

Char and I muffle our laughter with pillows until I can answer, “Of course, Mrs. Lafourche. I don’t want to disturb you anymore tonight!”

“When you get the D, think of me,” Mrs. Lafourche answers; then, someplace downstairs, a door slams, and she continues cursing at a presumably dozing Robert.

I hop to my feet and pull Char with me. “What’re you waiting on? You heard her. Take me to get the D.”

Char straightens her silver mini dress, fluffs her curls, then stares at me, deadpan. “More beautiful words have never left your mouth, Jacque.”

I gather my clutch, we link arms, and out the door we go with Snots clicking along behind us.

Goodreads / Amazon

  1. How long have you been writing?

I think it will be five years this May. That’s when I started the series.

  1. Where did your love of storytelling come from?

I love to read, and I needed to create a story of my own. I needed to create Chi.

  1. What was the hardest part of writing this book?

This book is highly emotional. Many bad things happen, and that was emotionally hard and exhausting for me. I had to take a month’ break from writing when the book came out because I couldn’t handle any more emotions for a while.

  1. What inspires you?

Things that infuriate me in our world today.

  1. Who inspires you?

My husband inspires me to be a better person. He’s much more understanding than I am. I try to be more like him…and usually fail at it. =p

  1. What are some day jobs that you have held?  If any of them impacted your writing, share an example.

I’ve been a bookseller and a French teacher. Neither of them influenced my writing. My daytime job does delay my writing, though, but that’s okay.

  1. What do you like to read in your free time?

YA anything, NA romance, horror, graphic novels.

  1. Do you aim for a set amount of words/pages per day?

No. I also don’t write every day. I write when I can. I believe setting a page count kills creativity.

  1. What is your favorite motivational phrase?

Mmmm, I don’t know that I have a phrase that motivates me. But my favorite quote is: “He jests at scars that never felt a wound.” I think that’s fairly accurate. I have seen it throughout my life, and it is a quote that applies to the characters in my series too.

  1. What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Write for yourself, not for money. Writing isn’t where the writing is. Be wary of how you represent people in your novels, especially marginalized people who deserve fair representation.

Thank you so much for the interview.

Blazing #BlogTour: Celtic Fire by Liz Gavin

Celtic Fire
Liz Gavin
(Highland Celts Series, #1)
Publication date: January 31st 2017
Genres: Adult, Historical, Paranormal Romance

This is a standalone, historical/paranormal romance. Its mature themes – violence, religious war, and pagan rituals – might not be appropriate for audiences under 18.

When ancient gods ruled and Druids kept Faith alive, the Celts thrived as a democratic, matriarchal society. Then savage Roman soldiers swept across Europe, killing and enslaving. The Celts did not succumb without a fight. Their Old Ways survived centuries of ruthless domain until another menace loomed: a tortured god worshiped in cold stone buildings. The sacred shores of Avalon began to drift away, the mists threatened to hide the island from mortal eyes forever.

Against the bleak backdrop of war, the gorgeous Scottish Highlands stood tall, sheltering its inhabitants from greedy invaders. Yet the reach of the eagle banners was long and the highlanders turned to the Goddess for protection. However, the sacred groves felt silent and grim as Avalon faded away. Once sad, pealing bells began to sound strangely comforting while the high walls of monasteries offered an alluring barrier from violence. Caught in the middle of this centuries-old war, a young High Priestess might be Avalon’s last chance.

Wise beyond her years and powerful like no other Priestess in her lifetime, Rowen had served the Goddess faithfully, forsaking her family and the company of her soulmate. When the Lady of the Lake asks for another sacrifice, it might be one too many for her scarred heart. How could she obey the Goddess without betraying Caddaric? Could she trust Eochaid, who embodied everything she despised and hated? Would she be able to fulfill her duties without losing her soul?

Caddaric had been Rowen’s companion in countless lives; but, now, they existed in different realms. Beautiful Rowen lived in the mortal world while sweet Caddaric remained in the sacred isle of Avalon, watching over her. Could he step aside to allow another man – a flesh and blood man – to become her protector?

Eochaid had sworn to protect the Old Ways. The rude warrior never quite understood his faith yet his loyal heart belonged to the Goddess. A gorgeous, fiery High Priestess was not in his plans. He would risk his life to protect Rowen; but, would the Goddess safeguard his heart? Could he defend the bewitching maiden from himself?

When stakes were so high that a simple mistake could cost their very world, a priestess, a Druid, and a warrior must learn to trust each other and the mysterious ways of the Goddess. Their success would save Avalon. Their failure would tear the island from the human realm forever, condemning it to oblivion.

Failure was not an option.

Night falls in the material realm, tearing the veil between the worlds and allowing me to reach Rowen’s house. Even though I feel like a criminal hiding from other human eyes, I reckon it’s wise to avoid being seen by the villagers. They’re faithful to the Goddess yet they don’t have the Sight, or knowledge, to understand how the spiritual world coexists with the material plane so they might get scared. As soon as the chants around the Samhain bonfire decrease in intensity, Rowen comes inside looking for me. She doesn’t need to search for long.

“I’ve missed you!” she whispers as her arms snake around my waist and I hold her close to me.

Inhaling her scent as sweet as the apple blossoms in Avalon, I kiss her forehead, “So have I.”

We sit in front of the fire pit, which will keep us warm during the cold October night. Her soft arm around my waist, her head on my shoulder.

“This isn’t fair. This world seems to have only one moment set aside for us instead of the eternity I’d like to share with you.”

“Your time in this plane unfolds faster than that in Avalon so it’s your impression; but, it isn’t necessarily so,” Rowen pouts and I can’t avoid chuckling at her childish reaction. I caress her lower lip with a thumb and whisper. “So unbefitting a High Priestess.”

I watch her fighting back a smile until she loses the battle, “Don’t mock me, Caddaric Seagha. It’s so lonely on this earth without you.”

Choosing not to engage in this old argument, because it’s pointless, I run my fingers through her red curls and stare into the dying fire, summoning courage to deny the request she’s about to make. I don’t need the Sight to know she’s going to ask me what she does on every sacred festival.

“Caddaric, will you lie with me?”

“You know we shouldn’t.”

“I’m not asking you to make love to me. I just wish to feel your arms around me like we used to do in past lives.”

“That I can do. I’m glad you’ve finally resigned yourself to our new roles in this life. Although the sacred days allow me an easier passage to your realm, my body doesn’t have the same desires as a human body does.”

Feeling her shiver against me, I tighten my hold and rub her arms to keep the chill away.

“I know that. It’s just that I sometimes feel as if we’ve been tricked into accepting our separation, like we had no say in that and it’s all been decided for us.”

“To some extent, it’s been the case. However, it’s the Goddess who has made the decision. She’s All-wise and All-knowing. Whatever her plans, they’re the best for us. Everything will be fine in the end.”

A heartfelt sigh indicates Rowen acknowledges my argument, despite the fact she might not agree with it. Kissing the top of her head, I pull her closer. I might not have carnal desires for her any longer, but the strong connection between us, which has been built throughout multiple past lives, warms up my chest, enveloping us in a cocoon of harmony and joy.

Blazing #BlogTour: Alex: Perfect Opposite by Zoya Tessi

ALEX: Perfect Opposite Book One (Extended edition)
Zoya Tessi
Publication date: January 23rd 2017
Genres: New Adult, Romance

Their wishes were simple and modest. Fate had other things in store though, and she can be a real bitch sometimes.

All he wanted was to get the job done and somehow to endure those long months playing nanny to a spoiled little rich girl. Without strangling her with his bare hands in the process. Well, it is going to be much easier said than done.

All she wanted was to escape the past and live like any other girl. Her plan definitely didn’t include the arrogant, tattooed savage, with his awful mohawk and lack of social graces, whose only mission was to stick real close and mess up her life.

But, people aren’t always what they seem to be, are they?

Alex, Zoya Tessi, teaser 10

I went to the kitchen and took some bread out of the cupboard, reached over for a tub of jelly on the countertop and froze. The next moment, before I could catch it in my throat, I let out a loud, high-pitched scream.

There, near my hand, was the biggest cockroach I’d ever seen. It didn’t seem to be going anywhere, either.

Hearing footsteps from behind me, I turned and almost screamed for a second time. With a knife gripped in one hand, Alex was poised in the doorway, ready to attack and looking mean. The pose didn’t hold for long, maybe only a fraction of a second after he realized there wasn’t any danger, and then all his muscles relaxed at once.

“What the fuck was that for?”

“I… I was hungry, and I saw…”

I felt ashamed when I realized I’d acted like such a sissy over a bug. With a hangdog expression, I regarded Alex in silence for a few moments, while he stood waiting for an answer.

“A cockroach.”

“What?” he asked in disbelief.

“A cockroach. A big ugly black one.” I bent my head and pointed my finger over to the sink.

“A bug? Jesus! I’d thought they’d come for you or some shit.”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to get you in here, but… since you are, can you kill it? I mean, you’re here now…”

He cursed loudly and raised one arm, then brought it down fiercely, sending something whistling through the air towards me, its progress ending in a sharp snap. I jerked reflexively and looked in his direction to find that he wasn’t moving anymore. Turning back to the cockroach, I saw his slick knife buried first through the bug and then into the counter.

Approaching in a hurry, Alex pulled it out by the handle, complete with the bug, which he scraped off on the rim of the trashcan. After that, offering no further explanations he just left the room, weapon in hand. With my mouth open in disbelief, I could only stare at the mark on the surface where the roach had been. I stood for a full five minutes like that.
