Vices and Virtues: An anthology of the Seven Deadly Sins and Seven Dark Virtues
Publication date: November 14th 2017
Genres: Adult, Horror, Supernatural, Paranormal, Sci-Fi, Suspense/Thriller

Sins will weave you into their webs. They become the Vice you’re unable to shake. There are the values, taught from birth, which ride a razor’s edge. They turn into Dark Virtues, a twisted mockery of their true meaning.

Pride, envy, lust, gluttony, anger, greed and sloth all have their place in the tapestry of life. They are the Vices who lost sight of the Virtues: charity, temperance, forgiveness, humility, kindness, chastity and diligence.

Enter the worlds where the tales of the most sinful of Vices and the darkest of Virtues will entice and intrigue you…

…for even among the most devout there is a dark side.

SNEAK PEEKS:

SINS OF THE FLESH (Gluttony)

BY STACEY BROADBENT

Throwing caution to the wind, I slipped my feet into a pair of runners and walked down the road, telling myself it was to clear my mind. But really, I was on the prowl for fresh meat. Someone vulnerable—easy prey. I had to be smart about it; it was broad daylight after all.

Every person who walked past became a possible target. In my mind’s eye, I pictured a computer log for each one, listing their attributes. Having limited knowledge on the ins and outs of cannibalism, I had no idea what the perfect body type was for consumption. Would it matter if they were male or female? Was it better if they were lean and muscular, or was a layer of padding more flavourful? How was I to choose?

Turns out, I didn’t need to think about it at all. On my walk back home, I was knocked off my feet by a man out for a jog. He’d been too busy flicking through the playlist on his phone to see me, and by the time we’d both looked up, it was too late. We collided, my forehead into his chin and mouth. My hands automatically went up, pressing against his chest and sending us both bouncing off each other, landing on our behinds. Apologising profusely, he offered me his hand and pulled me to my feet. The impact had left a red egg on my head and skinned my palms raw. He, however, came across a little worse for wear, sporting a newly chipped tooth, and fat, bleeding lip. As soon as I got a whiff of the blood on his breath, I knew, he was the one.

I pointed to my house across the street, inviting him in to clean up while he called the emergency dentist. It was the least I could do.

Ushering him into the bathroom, I had him perch on the edge of the bath while I rummaged through the cabinet for the first aid kit. I needed to knock him out somehow. There was no way I could do this without it… unless…

A MILLION CLAY WOLVES (Greed)

BY AMBER K. BRYANT

Do you remember Jamey? Has a tattoo of a whale on his right arm, wears a red and white striped tank top—Sound familiar?”

Mora nodded. “He juggled knives and guns.”

“That’s right. Jamey is my boyfriend and we’re very happy, only… He has this crazy idea that he should give up the troop, join the army instead. He thinks it would provide a better life for us, but he’s wrong. This is the only life I want and I don’t want it to change. I need you to change his mind.”

“What?” She took a step away from Dare. “I… I can’t do that!”

“You don’t realize it, but you can. I saw it in you. The ability to endow magic. You just needed a jumpstart, and yesterday…” she pointed to the feather, “I gave it to you.”

Mora stared at the feather, still crumpled in her hand.

“Tell the feather that Jamey’s place is with me. In the troop. Tell the feather it needs to change Jamey’s mind. Go on.”

Mora lifted the feather halfway to her face, then paused. This would never work. Clearly circus life had taken its toll on Dare’s mental health. Or perhaps unstable people were attracted to the quirky life the troop seemed to lead. It was silly to give in to Dare’s demands. Then again, if she didn’t do it, perhaps Dare would become so angry, she’d bust out of her purple corset and become a rage-fueled She-Hulk. Perhaps the simplest way out of this situation was to tell the feather to become a mind-changer and then get the hell out of there.

“Fine, whatever.” She brought the feather to her lips and blew words into it. “Change Jamey’s mind. Make him stay. Oh!” She jumped as a tingling sensation moved through her body, from the soles of her feet up her legs and spine, then out to the tips of her fingers and into the feather. “What… what just happened.”

Dare’s face went back to its friendly older sister mode. “Exactly what I thought would. Thank you, Mora.” She took the feather back from Mora and pinned it into her dark, shimmering hair. “Wiser people than me would tell you to be careful with this gift of yours. Magic can be used for good or for evil. It doesn’t care which, most of the time.”

Confused, Mora toyed with a stray thread from the hem of her t-shirt. “But you’re… not telling me to be careful?”

Dare grasped Mora’s chin and tilted it so their eyes met. “We don’t find out what we’re capable of through advice.” She gave Mora’s face a tiny squeeze and then let her go. “Trial and error, darlin’.

Ascenders: High School for the Recently Departed (Ascenders Saga Book 1)

Is this Hell or is this High School?
THE ASCENDERS Book Saga Takes You to the In-between Where Teens Who Died Young Go On the Epic Adventure of an After-Lifetime
Walker Callaghan doesn’t know what happened to her. One minute she was living her teenage life in suburban Chicago…and the next minute, she was in a strange place and in a brand new school with absolutely no homework, no rules, and no consequences.
Walker Callaghan, 17, is dead.
She doesn’t go to heaven or hell. She lands at The Academy, a middle realm where teenagers have one thing in common: They were the morning announcement at their high schools because they died young.
These high school kids are now caught in a strange “in-between” zone where life hasn’t changed very much.  In fact, this special teen limbo looks a lot like life in a quaint Michigan town complete with jocks, popular girls and cliques. “There are even cheerleaders in death,” Walker observes.  It’s not a coincidence that the music teacher is a guy named Kurt who “used to have this band.” The drama teacher, Heath, is crush worthy because back in his life, he starred in some superhero movie.
Principal King explains the rules — there are none. Why? You can’t die twice.
There is no homework.
No tests.
No SATS.
You’re just there to learn because the human brain isn’t fully formed until you’re 24.
By the way, you can’t get hurt physically, so race your Harley off that hillside. But falling in love is the most dangerous thing you can do …because no one knows how long you’ll stay in this realm or what’s next.
“Losing someone you love would be like dying twice,” Walker says.
* * * * * *
Walker Callaghan has just arrived at the Academy after a tragic car accident. “Is this hell or is this high school?” she asks.
She finds out her new life is a bit of both as she falls in love with tat-covered, bad boy Daniel Reid who is about to break the only sacred rule of this place. He’s looking for a portal to return back to the living realm.
He needs just one hour to retrieve his younger brother who strangely never arrived at The Academy. Bobby is an Earth Bound Spirit, stuck at a plane crash site that took both of their lives as their rich father piloted his private jet nose-first into a cornfield on Christmas Eve.
Walker loves Daniel and risks it all to go with him.
Have they learned enough to outsmart dangerous forces while transporting a young child with them? Can their love survive the fragmented evil parts of themselves that are now hunting them down as they try to find a way back to the middle?
At the Academy, you learn the lessons of an after-lifetime.
“A new ‘Twilight Zone’ of a world. Speaking of Uncle Stevie, otherwise known as Stephen King, ‘Ascenders’ reads like something he might have written back in the Twilight Zone of his own youth. I love Koontz and King and haven’t been this excited about an author in a long time.” Newhouse Media
“I couldn’t put this book down. The female protagonist Walker Callaghan is right up there with Katniss from ‘Hunger Games.’ An epic read. I’ll be recommending this book to everyone.” Trance Reviews

Ascenders: Skypunch (Ascenders Saga Book 2)

In the Midst—a place for those who die young—there are no rules except one.
And Walker Callaghan, dead at seventeen, just broke it. She briefly revisited her earthly life . . . and the punishment is devastating.
Longing for her rebel love interest, Daniel Reid, Walker finds an ally in Cass, whose attraction to her is as alive as he is. “Life is short,” he tells her. “I’m banking on eternity. With you.”
In the second book of the Ascenders Saga, a proposed realm-jumping journey will take Walker and Daniel back to life again to search for something buried in history. They team with students from several other schools in the middle realm including a place for teens born with oddities. It’s home to the Claires . . . beautiful, ruthless, and quite dead seventeen-year-old quads who each have a different clairvoyant gift.
Can Walker survive another adventure of an afterlife-time—or will she find herself on the downside of eternity?
“This Saga needs a 10-star button!!!! If this isn’t already being made into a movie or a T.V. show I’m not sure why not. The second book of the Asenders Saga is just as good if not better as the first.” Be Seeing U Book Reviews
“Rarely, if ever, does the second book in a series come close to being as good as the first…. But, this book! In Skypunch, new characters are introduced, some twists you won’t see coming and the epic storyline continues. I would put this series in my top three favorites ever.” One Book Boyfriend at a Time

Ascenders: Omorrow (Ascenders Saga Book 3)

Expired at seventeen and living in a middle world for those who died young, Walker Callaghan and her rebellious love, Daniel Reid, have been tasked with an insurmountable mission: Find something hidden in the past that will forever change everything for the living and the dead.
Sent to a place where a second can mean a lifetime, Walker and Daniel find their existence threatened as they scour New York City decades to find the lost, secret writings of Albert Einstein. They are warned, “Die in the past and you will never be born in the future.”
History has a way of being rewritten by those who defy the odds. In the third book of the Ascenders Saga, will Walker manage to survive or delete her own story?

Kentucky Running Teaser 4

excerpt-1-1

“Fuck!” he muttered when her hand landed on his leg.

“Are you all right? You don’t seem to be doing okay. You’ve been quiet for the last six or seven miles. Is something bothering …”

Groaning, he pulled up at the next truck stop. He needed relief. Having her as close as she was would kill him soon if he didn’t relieve some of the pressure.

“I’ll be right back.”

Without a backward glance or another word, he hopped down out of the cab and tore off in the direction of the restroom. It was the middle of the night so he knew the customers in the little convenience store would be practically deserted. He head in that direction versus the standard stop hoping the restroom didn’t reek too much. As soon as he was in the restroom, he checked the one other stall. Once he noted the thing was empty, he got down to business. The nature of all of his thoughts along the last stretch of their journey had him standing at attention and just about ready for release. He just needed a few good pumps. Getting the sneak peek he’d had of her ample tits then line of her lace panties gave him the visual he needed to make this quick. The relieved groan from simply allowing his cock to spring free from its confinement filled the space and echoed back to him. He could see that the head was a wet from the slight leakage. Wrapping his hand around his shaft, he got busy. Thinking of stripping Kentucky and the gorgeous sight of her taut body had his balls immediately tightening.

Gideon groaned then moaned her name. For a moment, he thought he’d heard her respond. When he looked up, no one was in the doorway so he continued with his ministrations. It wasn’t until an extra hand joined his that he realized he wasn’t actually alone. Looking down, he saw those eyes. Those gorgeous blue eyes of hers were peering up at him as she wrapped both hands around him and guided the stiff head of his shaft to her parted lips. He was too far gone to stop what happened next. There was nothing in his body willing to fight against what she was offering, especially when her perfect little tongue darted out and swirled the tip of him. When her warm mouth wrapped around him and began to reel his length in, he was a goner. Fighting was a lost cause. Her cheeks hollowed like a fucking “Blow Job Queen” and he felt a new urge.

Excerpt

After dinner, while Avi settled the bill, Layla excused herself to go to the ladies’ room. She washed her hands and glanced in the mirror. A young woman pushing a wheelchair entered the restroom. The wheelchair occupant’s head was bent forward, her face hidden in the folds of a scarf. The wheelchair blocked the exit.

Layla smiled at the woman who pushed the chair. “Don’t worry, take your time.”

In accented English, the woman thanked her as she tried to help the invalid rise. She struggled to lift the large, unsteady, woman.

“Here, let me help you.” Layla kneeled to assist and felt a prick in her leg. “Ouch!” She looked down and saw the glint of a hypodermic needle. She tried to scream, but her vocal cords seized, her protests sounded like the hissing of a snake. Oh, my God. My voice? What’s happening to me? Her legs gave out beneath her. She sank paralyzed, all her ability to control her muscles gone. She knew her eyes were bugging out of her face with terror. She tried to form the words Help me…somebody help me? Tried to wrap her lips around them, but she could hear nothing but hiss, hiss, hiss.

The two women worked as a team, together they picked her up and lowered her into the chair. The woman who’d pretended to be incapacitated kneeled in front of her, unwound the scarf from her head and grinned. Layla wanted to scream, to kick, to claw the eyes that smiled, taunting her. Am I in some weird, parallel universe? The woman was a man.

He ignored the soundless cries coming from Layla and reached underneath the wheelchair. When he rose, he held a briefcase. After entering a code, the briefcase snapped open. Carefully he activated a switch, and the contents came alive. He gave a satisfied nod to his accomplice and locked the case. Then he pulled a roll of duct tape from beneath the chair. Terrified, she watched him tape the briefcase behind a Demilune cabinet situated against the wall.

In a frantic effort to resist she tried to move her fingers and hands, but no part of her body responded.

Unable to fight, they effortlessly secured and wrapped her in a scarf and blanket.

How could she have been so stupid to blow off her security? To risk everything without a thought to the danger? Her husband was a target, which made her a target. She was going to die. Poisoned and paralyzed, she was going to die, and she’d brought it on herself. All she could do was watch as the man who’d sat in the wheelchair removed the long black shroud-like cover he’d been wearing. Beneath the shroud-like garment, he wore slacks, a shirt, and a tie. He grabbed a sports jacket from beneath the wheelchair and put it on.

With the transformation complete he nodded to his accomplice. The woman peeked out the door, nodded okay, and her accomplice left the ladies’ room. A minute later, the other woman wheeled Layla, her hair hidden beneath a scarf, through the dining room. She tried to scream for help when they rolled past Avi, but her body was no longer hers. He didn’t give them a second look. She saw her life pass before her. I can’t be kidnapped again. The thought that she might never see her family again filled her eyes with invisible tears.

At the entrance to the restaurant, the man with shoulder-length dark hair waited, holding the door open. She was screaming, she could hear it in her head, but her cries were no more than hisses that emanated from an unfortunate woman. She managed a slight tremble, causing the wheelchair to infinitesimally shake, which only registered in the maître d’s eyes as pity. He quickly looked away and bid them goodnight.

GUEST POST:

HOW WRITING A NOVEL CAN HELP YOU HEAL

I first started writing STREETS OF GLASS, I had no idea the journey I was about to take. The novel was a normal project, but my life was about to become not-so-normal. As I was workshopping the book with my writing group (a 9-month process), I learned something that turned my world upside down. I was betrayed by someone very close to me, and suddenly every priority in my life shifted into a different place. I no longer trusted anybody. I didn’t even trust myself. Lies and deceit became a very real thing. Interestingly enough, here I was working on a book about just that!

I think one of the most interesting things about writing is what authors end up pouring into their work subconsciously. I don’t know if I really knew what was about to happen in my life as I was drafting the book, but as I worked on revisions and edits after the big change in my life, I realized how deeply I value truth and honesty and those people in my life I can count on for anything and everything.

My main character, Starry, is me in a lot of ways. She might not be the person I want to be. She’s kind of horrible, actually, but she shares a common value with me, and that’s honesty. One of my favorite quotes in the book is this:

“Nothing was more important to her than trust and loyalty. The syndicate was a world thick with secrets and lies and deceit, but those things could not be allowed to taint personal relationships.”

And it’s true in every facet of our lives, I think. Trust and loyalty mean everything in our quiet, personal lives. Without those, how can we be with anyone?

Looking back now, I realize how much writing STREETS OF GLASS has healed me. It helped me sort through a lot of the emotions I’ve had to deal with. I’m still learning how to face those who have hurt me, but writing is something that has truly saved my life in more ways than one.

Author Bio:

Michelle lives and writes in Utah, surrounded by the Rocky Mountains. She’s a foodie and also adores anything Star Wars related. She loves to read and write books in the time she grabs between her sword-wielding husband and energetic daughter. She believes a simple life is the best life. Michelle mainly writes contemporary upper YA fiction, but occasionally branches into other genres.

What happens when the one you’re meant to be with has been right in front of you all along?
Fallon Wrenshaw never screamed one single word so loudly in all her life.
Her throat burned.
Her ears rang.
All she wanted was for him to stop, but it didn’t matter—it was too late.
What’s done was done.
And in that moment, she realized she’d been blind to the truth for years.
All her greatest fears turned into her sad reality. She watched it all unfold right before her, no longer able to deny it.
Her heart shattered so thoroughly, she couldn’t imagine going on.
That was . . . until Parks.
He helped her see things differently.
He always had.
He was her light—her constant—her salvation.
He was her best friend and he’d been there all along, it just took her a while to see what was meant to be, and when she did, she worried it was too late.

That she’d lost her one final chance at love.

One Final Breath

One life.
One choice.
One love.
Sometimes it’s all we get and one moment could change it all.
I hate the number one—it haunts me; my every waking moment is a constant reminder of what I lost.
One day, I met a guy and I fell in love.
He asked me one question…I said yes.
Our life was perfect…until one day everything changed.
I watched him slowly slip and fade away.
The one person I loved, my best friend, my partner, my everything, was slowly dying right in front of my eyes.
The doctors said he had one year left; he only lasted one month.
As I held on to his hand, he took one final breath and slipped from this world.

The two were quite uncertain as to why it seemed so difficult to step inside the room. They had trampled across every inch of the house and looked through the belongings of a man they had never met, but felt as though they were intruding to even stand outside the door of an empty room.

Dean was a problem solver though and had finally settled on a way to get over that feeling. As he stood behind Elizabeth, just outside of the door frame, and with his coffee cup still in one hand, he put the palm of his hand on her back and gave a strong push. She stumbled awkwardly into the room.

“There,” he said proudly as he took a sip. “What do you think?”

“I think that you’re going to have a hard time sleeping tonight,” she replied.

He found it ironic that he had already weighed that possibility before he shoved her, and had still decided to do so. He smiled. “I’m good with that.”

He took a few faltering steps behind her before taking a deep breath and stepping inside completely. They both looked around and identified the same exact features they had seen the first time they stood outside the door: an entirely empty room with a sheer white curtain covering the only window, now with a new perspective standing inside.

Compared to the rest of the rooms in the house, this room was small. It had a closet on the left wall and the window on the back wall, which looked out into the backyard. There was nothing special or unique about the room, except this one wasn’t crammed to the ceiling with personal touches.

Dean and Elizabeth stared at each other as though competing for a prize in a contest, when Dean’s concentration fixated on something else. She followed the direction of his eyes to the wall behind her which had abruptly claimed his attention.

He had only stepped a few feet inside of the room when he eyed something on the east wall behind his wife. As he walked around her, she turned to look. He still clenched his coffee cup tightly in his left hand but reached up his right hand and ran his palm along the wall. Elizabeth stood in silence behind him and waited for an explanation. His hand paused in areas and then continued up and down until he reached the corner of the room.

The wallpaper, which was striped with thick bands of blue and slender bands of green, had stolen his concept of the English language, and he ignored his wife’s persistent calling of his name.

“Dean? Dean. Dean!” she insisted without a response from him. She approached him from behind and grabbed ahold of his shoulder and shook him.

He stumbled back upon reality long enough to mumble, “What is that?” he said, half dazed.

Elizabeth’s curiosity had remained occupied on her husband’s behavior until she too caught sight of what he had been eyeing. Covered by the blue and green wallpaper was the faint and somewhat abstract outline of something beneath the paper.

“Go get me something to get this wallpaper down.” The sound of his voice was urgent. He

sat his coffee up on the window sill and ran both hands along the wall.

Elizabeth froze for a moment before turning toward the door. She had just reached the hall when he called out, “Hey, wait. Look at this. It peels off.”

She turned sharply on her heel and headed back toward him.

“Here, can you help me with this? I’ll grab the top corner,” he said.

Each gripping a piece of wallpaper, they slowly pulled back the sun-faded sheets as it wilted off the wall. The persistent rain and wet weather, along with a poorly insulated window would make for some mold problems later on down the road, but for now, it made the process of removing wallpaper move at a much more rapid speed, and with their joint efforts the paper pulled cleanly off the wall.

The two stood with the now crinkled wallpaper clutched in their hands. Dean released his grip and dropped the ball of paper. He took a step back from the freshly unveiled wall.

“What on…” Elizabeth’s mouth gaped open and she seemed faced with the same loss of speech that her husband had experienced moments ago.

The wall, originally painted a now-faded yellow color, was splattered in red. Dean reclaimed the step that he sacrificed an instant earlier and squinted at the wall. The two had questioned the intentions of a man who would leave everything he owned behind and they had possibly found the answer, but now, the question shifted to whether or not they wanted to know.

Rain soaked and dreary, it was a 1901 abandoned Victorian that newlyweds
Dean and Elizabeth Montgomery hoped would fulfill their dreams of a
new start in life, even if the town of Eastbrook, Maine was nestled
under a constant blanket of fog.
The first neighbor the couple meets dashes those hopes when he raises a
bizarre question: what happened to the last person who lived in their
house? A cryptic question, but nothing to worry about. At least not
until the couple looked under the floorboards inside the house.
Under mounting pressure from the residents of Eastbrook to stop questioning
the past, Dean and Elizabeth are driven deeper into the history of
the house, the town, and their neighbors. When the couple discovers
what happened in Eastbrook, keeping the secret could save their
lives, but uncovering the truth might be worth the risk.
What happened inside The Empty Room is a mystery until the last page. A
gripping psychological suspense, the story takes readers on a
cat-and-mouse game where some secrets are better off hidden.
