The two were quite uncertain as to why it seemed so difficult to step inside the room. They had trampled across every inch of the house and looked through the belongings of a man they had never met, but felt as though they were intruding to even stand outside the door of an empty room.

Dean was a problem solver though and had finally settled on a way to get over that feeling. As he stood behind Elizabeth, just outside of the door frame, and with his coffee cup still in one hand, he put the palm of his hand on her back and gave a strong push. She stumbled awkwardly into the room.

“There,” he said proudly as he took a sip. “What do you think?”

“I think that you’re going to have a hard time sleeping tonight,” she replied.

He found it ironic that he had already weighed that possibility before he shoved her, and had still decided to do so. He smiled. “I’m good with that.”

He took a few faltering steps behind her before taking a deep breath and stepping inside completely. They both looked around and identified the same exact features they had seen the first time they stood outside the door: an entirely empty room with a sheer white curtain covering the only window, now with a new perspective standing inside.

Compared to the rest of the rooms in the house, this room was small. It had a closet on the left wall and the window on the back wall, which looked out into the backyard. There was nothing special or unique about the room, except this one wasn’t crammed to the ceiling with personal touches.

Dean and Elizabeth stared at each other as though competing for a prize in a contest, when Dean’s concentration fixated on something else. She followed the direction of his eyes to the wall behind her which had abruptly claimed his attention.

He had only stepped a few feet inside of the room when he eyed something on the east wall behind his wife. As he walked around her, she turned to look. He still clenched his coffee cup tightly in his left hand but reached up his right hand and ran his palm along the wall. Elizabeth stood in silence behind him and waited for an explanation. His hand paused in areas and then continued up and down until he reached the corner of the room.

The wallpaper, which was striped with thick bands of blue and slender bands of green, had stolen his concept of the English language, and he ignored his wife’s persistent calling of his name.

“Dean? Dean. Dean!” she insisted without a response from him. She approached him from behind and grabbed ahold of his shoulder and shook him.

He stumbled back upon reality long enough to mumble, “What is that?” he said, half dazed.

Elizabeth’s curiosity had remained occupied on her husband’s behavior until she too caught sight of what he had been eyeing. Covered by the blue and green wallpaper was the faint and somewhat abstract outline of something beneath the paper.

“Go get me something to get this wallpaper down.” The sound of his voice was urgent. He

sat his coffee up on the window sill and ran both hands along the wall.

Elizabeth froze for a moment before turning toward the door. She had just reached the hall when he called out, “Hey, wait. Look at this. It peels off.”

She turned sharply on her heel and headed back toward him.

“Here, can you help me with this? I’ll grab the top corner,” he said.

Each gripping a piece of wallpaper, they slowly pulled back the sun-faded sheets as it wilted off the wall. The persistent rain and wet weather, along with a poorly insulated window would make for some mold problems later on down the road, but for now, it made the process of removing wallpaper move at a much more rapid speed, and with their joint efforts the paper pulled cleanly off the wall.

The two stood with the now crinkled wallpaper clutched in their hands. Dean released his grip and dropped the ball of paper. He took a step back from the freshly unveiled wall.

“What on…” Elizabeth’s mouth gaped open and she seemed faced with the same loss of speech that her husband had experienced moments ago.

The wall, originally painted a now-faded yellow color, was splattered in red. Dean reclaimed the step that he sacrificed an instant earlier and squinted at the wall. The two had questioned the intentions of a man who would leave everything he owned behind and they had possibly found the answer, but now, the question shifted to whether or not they wanted to know.

Rain soaked and dreary, it was a 1901 abandoned Victorian that newlyweds
Dean and Elizabeth Montgomery hoped would fulfill their dreams of a
new start in life, even if the town of Eastbrook, Maine was nestled
under a constant blanket of fog.
The first neighbor the couple meets dashes those hopes when he raises a
bizarre question: what happened to the last person who lived in their
house? A cryptic question, but nothing to worry about. At least not
until the couple looked under the floorboards inside the house.
Under mounting pressure from the residents of Eastbrook to stop questioning
the past, Dean and Elizabeth are driven deeper into the history of
the house, the town, and their neighbors. When the couple discovers
what happened in Eastbrook, keeping the secret could save their
lives, but uncovering the truth might be worth the risk.
What happened inside The Empty Room is a mystery until the last page. A
gripping psychological suspense, the story takes readers on a
cat-and-mouse game where some secrets are better off hidden.

running security for Harry York at York Brothers Studio in 1931
Hollywood. York has a problem with bad boy actor Johnny Cutter, who
failed to show up on the set to finish his latest picture, and Brand
is sent to find the star. In doing so, Brand uncovers a trail of
white slavery, drugs, and murder, involving famous actors and wealthy
businessmen—and a dirty cop who was once Brand’s partner on the
force. As the body count mounts, Brand tries desperately to discover
the truth—before he becomes one of the victims.
The Naked Nymph in the Dark Flickers
A Neil Brand Thriller Volume 2

Rachel Ann Maddon is about to become America’s next great movie star.
Adored by the camera, loved by her public, beautiful Rachel Ann has
it all, including a dark secret from her past that threatens to blow
up her promising future when her mentor and lover—a man old enough
to be her father—turns up dead. Did he fall or was he pushed? Or
did the bullet in him do the job? Either way, a homicide
investigation will be deadly publicity for Rachel Ann and her family.
Rachel Ann’s movie studio switches into high gear to protect her
teetering career, but then Neil Brand, the studio’s security chief,
uncovers a blackmail scheme over illicit sex films that threatens
other major motion picture stars. As the heat builds, the rich and
powerful scramble to get out from under. That’s when the bodies
begin to pile up.
Ray Dyson first took up writing in Evansville, Indiana, far enough back
that not only is the house he was born in no longer there, neither is
the street. He had a short career as a baseball player, but a long
career as a newspaperman whose gigs included crime reporter, sports
reporter and sports editor. He is also a noted Western historian. He
is the author of the baseball book, Smokey Joe: A Baseball Fable, a
tale of legendary pitcher Smokey Joe Hood. That book, and Bannon: The
Scavenger Breed, involve members of the Bannon family: Joel Patrick
the main character in Bannon, and his grandson, Henry Louis Bannon,
an outfielder in Smokey Joe. His mystery novel, The Ice Cream Blonde,
set in the Hollywood of the early 1930s, follows York Studios
security chief Neil Brand as he solves the murder of a famous movie
star mixed up in blackmail and white slavery. His latest Neil Brand
tale, The Naked Nymph in the Dark Flickers, about a rising movie star
caught up in a treacherous blackmail scheme that turns to murder, is
now available. He lives in Mansfield, Ohio, with his family. In
retirement, he works even harder on his golf game, but with less
success.

Excerpt:

She’d just told him the most amazing tale, and now she wanted him to leave her to face danger alone…

A shadowy figure sat on the table. A small flame appeared in the darkness as the silhouetted intruder lit a cigarette. “That’s it. I’m getting you out of here,” Marie said. She grabbed Parker by the arm and led him away from the picnic table.

Marie blasted another jolt of blue light into the woman, who collapsed to the ground, jets of white smoke swirling across her limp body.

A voice called out from behind them. “You have nowhere to run, outsider.” Its tone was cold and mocking. Parker turned to look, but Marie nudged him forward. “Get in the car,” she barked. This was not a request.

“But what about you?” he asked when he reached the car door and opened it. “I’ll be fine, just go.” “Who is that?” “That’s Seth. I’ll explain later. Just go.”

Why couldn’t she just come with him? She didn’t have to stay and fight. They could make their escape together. He was about to ask her to get into the car when Seth loomed behind her. “He’s behind you!”

Marie whirled around. Seth took a long drag on his cigarette, the orange ember intensifying in the darkness. The small fire pulled away from his pale face, and he exhaled. “Stop this foolishness, Marie. You can take your charge and run to the four corners of the earth, and I’ll still be there, waiting.”

Blurb From Goodreads:

You can’t always get what you want.

Shy and sweet Lia Gardella has only wished to make her father proud. Dropping plates, spilling drinks, and missing orders, she’s never fit in at the family business. And after nearly incinerating the whole building, she ran from the stressful environment.

Want not.

As head chef of one of the city’s best eateries, Finn Newland seems to have it all. He enjoyed a youthful career in the MMA. Women worship him. After years of hard work, he finally has an opportunity to take over the restaurant he’s always considered his own.

Be careful what you wish for.

When Lia’s father summons her to supervise Gardella’s, instead of handing the reins to Finn, no one is happy. They don’t know how to collaborate on running the restaurant. Nor are they confident they can continue to deny their attraction to one another. But before they can attempt a partnership of any kind, they’ll need to find the culprit behind a trend of spiteful sabotage aimed at Gardella’s.

My Review:

This was such a fun book to read. I loved the characters and have a new book boyfriend… sigh… Finn. And Lia’s klutziness was quite amusing although I didn’t like her lack of backbone but thankfully she grew one as the story progressed. I enjoyed the mystery and trying to figure out who was trying to sabotage the restaurant and I loved the fact that I was wrong. Then once it did become obvious which employee was I still had no clue what the motive was. It was great and I look forward to reading more from this author. I will warn you though, there are some spelling/grammar/editing errors but it didn’t at all take away from the story, and there weren’t that many. If you’re like me and can overlook minor mistakes then I suggest you read this.

EXCERPT:

“Marina?” The deep timbre of his voice dimmed the ache in her ribs and the throb in her thigh and shifted them both higher and lower, to places that had felt a hundred hands and responded to none.

Her vocal cords constricted.

“Are you okay? Can I come in?” The concern in his voice and actions seemed genuine, which only made the realization hurt all the more.

He’d use her for information and then cast her aside, no question. She could weather the storm of him if he treated her like all the other men in her life had. If he’d take his pleasure and walk away, she’d survive. She’d survived it too many times to count.

“Marina? Answer me.”

She wanted to reassure him, but she couldn’t. After two years of captivity, self-preservation overrode all other essential human mechanisms. Decency didn’t register on the scale.

“I’m coming in.”

Corded muscles encased in the white T-shirt distracted from the vibrant watercolor lion roaring on the front. He’d lost the lumberjack long-sleeve somewhere outside the massive bathroom. As he closed the space between them in two gaping strides, those thick masses bound and stretched under the tight cotton. His mane hung loose like the wild animals on his chest. Concern knitted his brow.

“Your lips are blue.”

The tentative consent-seeking man vanished. Oliver plunged a hand into the tub, while another pressed two fingers to her neck.

“You’re freezing,” he growled. “A place this uppity should have a mammoth water heater.” His head shook, tousling his long blond locks. “I should have checked on you sooner.”

A roughened palm, a match to the one that had pressed to her face, pushed up her neck. His fingertips gripped her chin and turned her face to him.

“Marina, talk to me.” His dark blue gaze begged. If she spoke, she’d change her tactic and lose the battle altogether.

He wrenched off the water. Metal cried against metal.

The urge to join in, to weep until she couldn’t think, rushed through her veins. She yearned for a simple life—a normal job, a home, someone to love, and someone to love her in return. A chill shook her from the useless thoughts.

Want couldn’t create.

Survival could. And she was so close. Caring eyes, kind words, and a body made to give and receive pleasure wouldn’t railroad her determination.

Oliver’s strong arm banded her back, while his other hooked under her knees. When he hoisted her out, water cascaded in a torrent. Then she was against his chest, the warmest, safest place she’d ever been.

A tingle started in Marina’s fingers and toes and then burned its way up her limbs. Her body shivered against immovable slabs of muscle.

“I’ve got you.”

My Review:

This was fascinating! The use of Dante’s levels of hell portrayed in the rooms of the mansion was something I would love to actually see.  The story jumped back and forth from “today” to 7 years ago and it wasn’t until close to the end that we find out why Angelica is seeking payback. I hope as the series continues that there’s more… more detail, more… just more. I didn’t want it to end, it was like listening to a song that gives you chills yet you can’t turn it off.

EXCERPT:

He turned when he felt her eyes on him, “Like what you see?”

She felt herself blush immediately even though embarrassment was a little late at this point between them.

“I’m allowed to look.” She made her way over to him trying to look coy. She ran her fingers up his arm,” and touch.”

Jared grabbed her and pulled her over to straddle him.

“You’re allowed to do whatever the hell you please.” He sealed the statement with a kiss. When he finally pulled away Hannah was completely breathless. She started to take what there was of his workout shirt off of him when his phone rang. “Screw ‘em. I’ll call whoever it is back.”

“Oh good.” Hannah giggled as he started undressing her. They lips never left each other’s which made the process a little more complicated by fun.

Jared started to plant kisses down her neck as his hands roamed her legs and hips. Just as he was about to take her nipple in his mouth the phone rang again. Jared growled as he laid his head between her breasts.

Hannah held his head there as she let out a frustrated breath, whoever it was wasn’t going to wait. Jared kissed her one last time before he got up to reach his phone. Hannah started to reach for her clothes, but Jared threw a blanket at her.

“This isn’t over I’m going to get rid of them and then finish what we started.” He winked at her as he answered his phone.

Author Interview:

So, what have you written?

Currently my only published work is Exchange of Power. It’s the first in my breakout series though so I have the second book, Power Born, already in the works.

Where can we buy or see them?

I am exclusive on Amazon.com right now for the ebook, but you can purchase my paperback other places like createspace.com and Barnes and Noble.

Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

Hannah is my main character in Exchange of Power, she is special in her fierceness. She goes through so much with the loss of her husband, and then learning that he was lying to her about a big portion of his life for their entire marriage. She fights to get her life back amongst all the chaos Nick’s death and lies have created, and she also fights for herself and her belief that she deserves happiness. She’s a strong female lead character, but in her story isn’t hers alone and I introduce a lot of characters that will create a main group of characters to follow throughout the whole series. I have so much to tell for each of them, and I can’t wait for you guys to meet the rest of the gang as I like to refer to them.

What are you working on at the minute?

I’m focusing on the second book of this series right now. Like I said Hannah’s story is just the beginning there is so much more to this gang’s adventure. The second book will focus on Austin, as the lead, but the whole gang will still be there right next to him with the addition of a newbie, Nikki.

What’s it about?

The Power Series will more of an epic journey that follows my ever expanding group of characters as they all adjust to this new role that they play in stopping headquarters from creating a highly advanced group of agents for his own personal gain. There are new romances popping up, old romances trying to rekindle, and a lot of suspense as the crew gears up for their ultimate battle.

What genre are your books?

I’m a romance suspense writer with just enough paranormal thrown in there to keep it interesting.

What draws you to this genre?

I love writing romance because we all love a happily ever after. However there needs to be some suspense to it I like a lot of plot twists and loves that fall apart and then come back together I think makes the characters stronger and gives my readers more of a journey than just a ride. The paranormal aspect interests me because it opens up this whole other world that I can play with on top of my already overactive imagination.

When did you decide to become a writer?

I don’t think I ever really decided to become a writer I just picked up a pen one day and started writing. The next thing I knew I had filled my notebook up so I transferred it to my laptop and then just kept going. I have this whole concept in my mind for these characters that feel so real to me that I just need to get it out on paper.

What is the hardest thing about writing?

Letting people read my work!! I know that sounds crazy, but that scared me more than anything. It was so personal for me since it was my first, and I had never done anything like this before that you just automatically assume everyone will hate it and think you’re crazy for calling yourself a writer. I took the leap though and have had some great feedback. I know it won’t be for everyone, and I don’t have near as many panic attacks as I use to when people tell me they want to read my book.

What is the easiest thing about writing?

I love writing. I love bringing my imagination to life, and I don’t try to force it. If the words and ideas aren’t coming to me naturally when I sit down with my laptop then I just simply shut it off and go about my day. It won’t be long before I hear a song that brings my characters to life in my mind and I unravel a part of their story and I’m running for my laptop to hurry up and get the words down.

If this book is part of a series, tell us a little about it?

My series will follow my original group as introduced in the first book; Nick, Hannah, Austin and Jared. This will grow by a few as the group finds love along the way. The group battles their own headquarters once they discover that headquarters has their hands on a wolf gene that will enhance a humans DNA to create super agents so they can charge the government more money to utilize their unit. The problem is the gene hasn’t been properly tested and the guys are apparently up for use as test subjects. Headquarters is also out to eliminate anybody that stands in their way of injecting this gene even if it’s the men’s wives, girlfriends and etc. There’s a whole lot of suspense and drama unwound as it all spirals out of control.

Author Bio:

Andrea spends her time while she’s not dreaming up friends and villains alike chasing after her two kids and husband at their home in rural West Virginia.

Her guilty pleasure once the kids are asleep is to read. She reads everything she can get her hands on and then she reads it over and over and over again. Her all time favorite book is secretly tucked away under her bed looking very war battered from the hundreds of reads.

The Power Series is her breakthrough series as an indie author. She attributes her writing skills to her overactive imagination, and her husbands wacky dreams.

Bombastic #BookBlitz: Cease & Desist by Stephen David Hurley

Cease & Desist
by Stephen David Hurley
Genre: YA Thriller
Release Date: October 10th 2016

Summary from Goodreads:

What if the secret to being charismatic were actually a gene you could inherit, and pass along to your children. What if this “X-factor” could make you a star? Welcome to the world of Cease de Menich, a sixteen-year-old actress in New York City who gets cast as Joan-of-Arc in a reality-drama, only to discover her “acting gift” has been passed down through her bloodline for almost six-hundred-years. Cease finds the plot of the drama reveals dark secrets from her past–an abusive mother, a brother who committed suicide–and the reader must decide if she’s a reliable narrator or a terrified girl who’s succumb to the pressure of fame and the abuse of her past.

Cease & Desist is a dark, contemporary YA thriller with a supernatural twist. Readers of books like I Let You Go and The Girl on the Train will enjoy this coming-of-age story, which struggles with the realities of sexuality, violence as entertainment, and mental illness. Cease & Desist has excellent crossover potential into the adult marketplace.

Excerpt – Chapter 1

I’m Cease de Menich. It’s OK if you don’t know me—but you will. That’s what my agent keeps telling me to tell people, and judging from the throng of mostly stage-moms waiting beneath a marquee that reads “Good Morning, New York City,” maybe he’s right. I’m the actress who plays Jeanne d’Arc (please don’t call her Joan; that was never her name) the virgin, the warrior, the Catholic saint in a reality show that’s going to be a blockbuster. I’m supposed to say that, too. But don’t worry, I’m not over-the-top full of
myself the way the others in the final three are.

I’m not beautiful, for starters. I’ve got a big nose—a French nose, as my Aunt Nana insists—but if it weren’t for my wide-set eyes it would be a real honker. I want to have it fixed but my Nana won’t let me. She says it gives me character. But the real reason is that we haven’t got the money, so that’s another thing you don’t have to worry about. I’m not rich, not like the girls from the Upper East Side who sat beside me at Juilliard. What I am is tough and smart, and I have something all the unrich, unbeautiful girls have: I have absolutely nothing to lose. I look out the window of the car as I take off the last of
my body armor; at the faded crepe in a liquor store window—the long shadows lumbering
over subway grates on Broadway—and back to the faces of the wannabes waiting in the cold. All those wet noses and eager looks—all those eager fingers I hope will soon be pressing the letters of my name into their home screens. It’s only been four months since I was standing outside in the cold—an unknown, a wannabe, just licking my lips hoping to sink my teeth into a plum role. For all you people who’ve been watching me on the WebTV trailers, I know what you’re thinking—that I just got lucky. I don’t deserve to be here. And you know what? I think that, too. (Is there an unrich, unbeautiful, sixteen-year-old girl anywhere who wouldn’t think that?) But fame never landed on my doorstep like a perfectly wrapped gift. I’ve paid my dues in ways you’ll never know… and for those of you who’ve been watching the installments the producers have been showing on WebTV every night—and are wondering just what this show is, I can offer you an explanation in a few simple steps. First. This isn’t just a reality show; in other words, this isn’t just a show about a bunch of girls and boys who fall in love or beat each other to death—it’s a drama. I’m an actress playing an historic character who lived almost six hundred years ago. Try to think of my character, Jeanne d’Arc, as a real-life superhero, because she was. The three finalists who must compete for the boys are Jeanne d’Arc, Catherine the Great, and Susan B. Anthony. The boys do not play historic characters—they’re just hunks who flex their pecs and preen a lot. You probably know by now, that the conflicts we face are pretty modern—as in, things that girls and boys must face every day at home and school.

Second. The plotlines of each episode are closely guarded secrets. Dialogue is released the night before we shoot, and I’m given only my lines and a brief outline of the action. There were rumors in the beginning that actors would bribe the writers to get their lines early or to find out what was being written about the other characters. I don’t doubt it.

Third. Francis MacDonald, the director, is crazy—hopefully crazy the way that Hollywood geniuses are—an auteur, I try to convince Nana, but she keeps insisting he’s an imbecile.

I comb my fingers through my hair and need another minute before I get out of the car. I’m tired. Before arriving here I was locked in a straw-filled cage for three hours, and now I’d rather be back home in Tudor City with my Nana having my brownies and milk because even a martyr about to be burned at the stake deserves her brownies and milk. I open the window. “We’ve been waiting all morning,” a girl in the crowd says.

I offer up a wholesome smile. “Sorry. I was tied up.” And I was. Tied to a stake, in fact, just after the interrogators in Rheims, France (actually it was the Kaufman-Astoria Studios in Queens) grilled me, Jeanne d’Arc, about the voices I heard from angels and why I chose to wear men’s clothing. A woman tugs the arm of her girl, maybe eight, with a
crooked smile, braces, and black rimmed glasses with unfashionably large frames. “She’d make a great angel, don’t ja think?”

I know why they’ve come. All those eager faces. All those Louis Vuitton dreams. They want to know how I made it. What it feels like, rising so quickly at such a tender age. What the ingredients are in the potion that raised me up over all the others.

The it-ness of fame. Be careful what you wish for, is what I should tell them, tell all of you. Fame tastes like a kiss from a stranger—a really hot guy who’s got a dark side you’d better see before it’s too late. Fame will make you do the most horrible things to the people you love. It feels like a bolt of grief in my chest, a lock I’ve felt since the first day I arrived on the set.
