They say a war is brewing in the unseen world—and I’m the only one who can stop it.
Eight weeks ago, a woman sacrificed herself for me. She believed with such certainty I would save this world, she used the last of her powers to protect me. But not everyone shares her conviction. The Council has turned to less than savory methods to force out my magic, and as nightmarish visions fill my head, I’m no longer sure I can trust myself.
Attacks from the Necros grow bolder every day. To keep me hidden, the fiercely irresistible sorcerer at my side will take me to his underworld; a place no sane person would dare to follow. But the whispers stalk me everywhere…hunting me, wanting me. And the more I run, the more I realize that safety may be just another dark illusion.
Readers who like The Twenty-Sided Sorceress, The Elemental Series, and The Baine Chronicles will fall in love with Miers’ paranormal universe, and those fighting to defend it.

Bombastic #BookBlitz: Aiding The Dragon by Jessie Donovan

Aiding the Dragon
Jessie Donovan
(Stonefire Dragons #9)
Publication date: May 25th 2017
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal

Teagan O’Shea is a rare female dragon-shifter leader. While her Irish clan has a tradition of female leaders, they have always had to hide behind a male face publicly to prevent the other clans from viewing them as weaker and then attacking. When the truth leaks, Teagan is faced with a choice—hand over the leadership to a male or invite the challengers to a leadership trial and earn her place. Out to prove having a penis isn’t required to be a leader, she picks the latter.

Aaron Caruso is sent to Ireland under the guise of repairing relations between two clans on the isle of Ireland. However, upon arrival he learns the truth. Determined to secure Teagan’s place so he can escape her alluring eyes and addicting personality, he busies himself with helping her any way he can. A female used him once and he’s not about to go through that again, no matter how much the Irish female tempts him.

As the pair work together on preparations for the leadership trial, both Aaron and Teagan start to see each other in a new light. Both have their own self-imposed loneliness and yearn for something they can’t have. Can Aaron and Teagan not only change tradition but also open their hearts? Or will they each be doomed to live alone to fight their inner battles?

EXCERPT:

Teagan’s heart thumped inside her chest. Not because of all the eyes on her. She was used to that.

No, it was because of the devilish look in Aaron’s eyes. She had a feeling he’d make her forget about everything but keeping up with him.

Her dragon spoke up. That’s a good thing. Once he knows our touch, he’ll be begging to kiss us in a dark corner somewhere.

Before she could state again that she wasn’t going to kiss Aaron that evening, the music began. She and Aaron bowed to one another before circling each other left and then right.

His dark brown eyes were intense, but it was foolish to think he was focusing on her. The male was competitive and out to win. He was probably looking for any fault to take advantage of.

Too bad Teagan was determined to outshine him first. Just because she could take down a male who weighed several stone more than her didn’t mean she couldn’t be dainty and graceful in order to outdo a male on the dance floor, too.

She put out her right hand and Aaron his left. The instant their palms touched, a shot of electricity raced through her body. But she didn’t have time to study Aaron and see if he felt the same pull of attraction as she.

True mate or not, she would admit he was a handsome male. And with his eyes and smiles, he’d probably danced with many females. Teagan wouldn’t read into anything.

They twirled with their hands clasped and released at the right moment to spin around and face each other once more. Aaron reached out and placed a hand on her waist to pull her close. She sucked in a breath at the heat of his skin through the thin material of her dress.

Aaron’s pupils flashed to slits and back before he took her hand and led her in the pattern of the dance. As their bodies moved in time to the music, she was content to allow him to lead.

Her dragon chuckled. It’s the first step to my grand plan. I look forward to him leading in other ways, such as when we’re naked.

Teagan concentrated on the steps of the dance before replying, You’re not helping. I don’t want to stumble.

Aaron increased his movements as the tempo picked up. She murmured, “You’re better at this than I thought.”

He tilted his head. “So are you ready to wax on about my dancing skills?”

She rolled her eyes. “One dance proves nothing. All I have to do is request an Irish one, and you’d be on the sidelines within seconds, nursing a twisted ankle or worse.”

“Then it’s a good thing I don’t own a pair of the special shoes you need to make the tapping sounds. I can sit out from the beginning and merely watch your legs as they flail about.”

As Aaron spun her, he pulled her tighter against his body. Only because the dance was ingrained into her being did she not miss a step. Aaron radiated an unimaginable amount of heat. A faint sheen of sweat probably covered her face from both dancing and being in Aaron’s proximity.

Her beast spoke up. We’d never be cold in bed again.

Focusing on the male, she kept up with him. “We have plenty of those types of shoes to share. I’m sure one of my Protectors would lend you theirs.”

“I might twist my ankle, and then I wouldn’t be able to face you in the morning. Which would you rather have—me stumbling to prove you’re a better dancer or having me available to brush up your skills to prepare for the upcoming challenge?” he asked.

“You’re right. I think I’d rather pin you to the ground and have you cede to me. That’ll be more satisfying.”

Aaron put extra energy into his turn as he murmured, “I was just thinking the same thing.”

Jessie Donovan wrote her first story at age five, and after discovering the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey in junior high, realized that people actually wanted to read stories like those floating around inside her head. From there on out, she was determined to tap into her over-active imagination and write a book someday.

After living abroad for five years and earning degrees in Japanese, Anthropology, and Secondary Education, she buckled down and finally wrote her first full-length book. While that story will never see the light of day, it laid the world-building groundwork of what would become her debut paranormal romance, Blaze of Secrets. In late 2014, she became a New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author.

Jessie loves to interact with readers. When not reading a book or traipsing around some foreign country on a shoestring, can often be found on Facebook.

SNEAK A PEEK AT CHAPTER 1:

She made an effort to open her eyes, compelling her heavy eyelids to obey. She swallowed hard, her throat raw and dry, as she urged the wave of nausea to subside. Dizzy and confused, she struggled to gain awareness. Where was she? She felt numb and shaky, unable to move, as if awakening from a deep sleep or a coma. She tried to move her arms, but couldn’t. Something kept her immobilized, but didn’t hurt her. Or maybe she couldn’t feel the pain, not anymore.

Her eyes started to adjust to the darkness, enough to distinguish the man moving quietly in the room. His silhouette flooded her foggy brain with a wave of memories. She gasped, feeling her throat constrict and burning tears rolling down her swollen cheeks.

Her increased awareness sent waves of adrenaline through her body, and she tried desperately to free herself from her restraints. With each useless effort, she panted harder, gasping for air, forcing it into her lungs. Fear put a strong chokehold on her throat and was gaining ground, as she rattled her restraints helplessly, growing weaker with every second. She felt a wave of darkness engulf her, this time the darkness coming from within her weary brain. She fought against that darkness, and battled her own betraying body.

The noises she made got the man’s attention.

“I see you’re awake. Excellent,” the man said, without turning.

She watched him place a syringe on a small, metallic tray. Its handle clinked, followed by another sound, this time the raspy, telling sound of a file cutting through the neck of a glass vial. Then a pop when the man opened the vial. He grabbed the syringe and loaded the liquid from the vial, then carefully removed any air, pushing the piston until several droplets of fluid came out.

Dizziness overtook her, and she closed her eyes for a second.

“Shit,” the man mumbled, then opened a drawer and went through it in a hurry.

She felt the needle poke deeply in her thigh, like it was happening to another person. She felt it, but distantly. She perceived a subdued burning sensation where he pushed the fluid into her muscle, then that went away when he pulled the needle out. She closed her weary eyes again, listless against her restraints.

The man cracked open ammonia salts under her nose, and she bounced back into reality at the speed of a lightning strike, aware, alert, and angry. For a second she fought to free herself, but froze when her eyes focused on the man in front of her.

He held a scalpel, close to her face. In itself, the small, shiny, silver object was capable of bringing formidable healing, as well as immense pain. The difference stood in the hand wielding it. She knew no healing was coming her way; only pain.

“No, no, please…” she pleaded, tears falling freely from her puffy eyes, burning as they rolled down her cheeks. “Please, no. I… I’ll do anything.”

“I am ready,” the man said. He seemed calm, composed, and dispassionate. “Are you ready?”

“No, no, please…” she whimpered.

“Yeah,” he said softly, almost whispering, inches away from her face. “Please say no to me. I love that.”

She fell quiet, scared out of her mind. This time was different. He was different.

He had everything but her.

Brian was on the outside with no way in – a situation completely foreign to him.

Another man had won and this was not only unacceptable, but unfathomable to him.

“I’m not giving up,” Brian Marks said under his breath.

The chase over, he had run aground.

Left splayed at the surprise delivered by the only woman who had ever challenged him, Brian had told Alex he understood. He’d even stopped calling.

The wound remained open. The only remedy he knew was to ignore how she felt, replaced with what he wanted.

A waft of stale alcohol escaped his mouth in a belch. He pushed himself off his couch, walking across the room to stare out at the expanse of the Pacific Ocean. The intense heat of an Indian summer day was gone. The smell of his inebriation remained.

The black sea in the dark night battered the shore, mist targeting him like tears, mocking his despondency but mistaking his mood. He could hear the boom of the waves but couldn’t see the sea. The moon in the sky created a light beam across the black water that appeared to be a celestial bridge. The setting was fitting for a noir film. It was a mirage that could hypnotize the onlooker into believing it was a short walk to touch the moon. But Brian wasn’t thinking about romantic images. The constant crash of the waves accentuated the beating pulse in his head.

Walking over to the kitchen, he opened a cabinet door. He popped the childproof cap off and took out two pills, swallowing them with water from a glass sitting in his sink.

Over and over, he replayed the cutting remarks Alex had delivered, which to him felt conjured out of nowhere. A typical woman’s response, he thought, without one rational element attached.

“Why do I have to account for every move I make?” He hissed, mocking what she had said to him. Like I ever would expect that of her.

Of course, Alex didn’t say that to Brian. When rejection makes a direct hit on a man’s ego and lodges in his heart, the double whammy obliterates his ability to comprehend his circumstances.

Men take rejection much differently than women.

There was no stronger proof of this universal law than Brian Marks, who came from a “boys will be boys” world. The era where womanizing and philandering were perks of power bestowed on men. He worked in an industry where sexism in casting was the creative norm. The writers, most of whom were men, were producing the screenplays that portrayed women’s roles as extensions of the male characters carrying the film. It was a power structure that existed through a moneyman’s vision driving the film, handed down to a male director to manifest.

If I’d disappeared, moved across the country without talking to her… What had made her do it, drop everything and move to Washington, D.C.?

Brian stood, watching the sea, a man alone talking to the gods, who were laughing at his weakness.

The waves beating the shoreline were confirmation that the pounding in his head was more than the drumbeat of his fury. The power of the ocean, the crashing waves and their retreat became the metronome to a new melody he was hearing.

It threw Brian backward again, memories cascading from inside his heart, while the film of it all played in his brain.

Almost three weeks had passed since Brandy’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and in that time, the dull throbbing ache in my chest had become a familiar aspect of my day-to-day life, although she was still unaware of this.
The diagnosis was weighing heavily on me. Sometimes, I wanted to rage against the world, against God or whoever the hell else might be listening, because she was slipping away and I couldn’t stop her. I wanted to plead, to beg for her to come back. I wanted to offer myself up instead.
I still hadn’t quite gotten over seeing her in a moment of ‘incoherence’ and I’d been trying to avoid it ever since, but I realized I had to steel myself.
I thought of filing a leave of absence from my job to fully take care of Brandy. I needed to be strong for my wife. She needed me more than anyone else and I’d be there for her no matter what happens.
“We’re getting on in years,” Brandy said when she snuggled close to me.
I looked at her and she stared back at me.
“Yes, that’s what will happen when I live for a while,” she added.
“Babe, what are you saying?” I asked, trying to deny it, trying to tell myself that there’s nothing wrong, not really. She has been a bit confused lately but everyone can have a bad day.
“It’s funny; I never thought my life would turn out like this. If someone told me that I will meet you and probably grow old with you, I’d take any chances to slow the process or to find a miracle cure.” Her voice was timid and small; nothing like the strong and confident woman I’ve come to admire so much.
I felt tears in my eyes. I hugged her close, bringing her face to my chest.
“Here we are, babe, and we will always be together,” I uttered, trying to bat the tears away without being obvious.
“Having regrets, Primitivo?”
“Ouch, the whole name,” I joked, pretending to flinch. “But no. No regrets, babe. You?”
Brandy smiled. “None at all.”
She slowly rolled over on her side and faced me, placing her hand on my forearm. “It’ll be okay… you’ll get over me,” she whispered, tears in her eyes.
“Are you still joking? It isn’t funny anymore,” I growled at her.
“Sorry, babe.” She sighed, and I lifted my gaze just in time to see tears fall down her cheeks.
“I will always love you,” she murmured softly, her breath hitching.
“I know that.”
“Still, you deserve to hear it more. And… And I want to say it, while I still can.”
“Just stop saying that I’ll get over you, okay?”
“But it’s the truth, we both know it. So until that end comes, I’m going to say it as much as possible b-before I forget how.” She pressed her face into my shoulder. “I love you. I love you. I love you. No matter what happens later, just know I’ll love you.”
“Me too. We will be together, Brandy, and have night stands forever.” To prove my point, I hugged her to my chest even tighter, wrapping my arms tightly around her as though every bone in the appendages have the strength to keep the memories in.

Clever #CoverReveal: Amnesia by Cambria Herbert

Amnesia
Cambria Hebert
Publication date: June 12th 2017
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense

I washed ashore in a little lake town.

A place where everyone knows everyone, yet…

No one knows me.

I don’t know me.

If a woman doesn’t know her own name, does she really exist?

I don’t know my natural hair color, my birthdate, or where I live.

I am invisible.

To everyone, to everything, even to myself.

Except to him.

I see the recognition deep in his stare, the way it lingers on my face as if I’m a puzzle he’s desperate to put together.

I just want answers, the truth… knowledge.

His lips are sealed. Still, his eyes beguile me.

I can’t trust anyone, not even myself. Someone wants me dead, the same someone who tried to bury me in a watery grave.

They’ll come for me again… I won’t know their face.

I don’t even know mine.

I am amnesia.

My Review:

Well, that started off with a bang! There was maybe a page or two of mundane stuff at the start and then it was a roller-coaster ride of excitement. As usual, Ms. Briggs does not disappoint, and makes it worth the year long wait for the next installment. If I didn’t have a job or family, this book would’ve been read in one sitting. It was so hard to put down, especially since Mercy seems to always end up in some mess or another. What was fun about this adventure was that no one seemed to know the what’s, why’s, where’s, and who’s until the end. Definitely keeps you on your toes, and the edge of your seat, as the story unfolds. I don’t know how many times I thought “ooooh, and the plot thickens” or “OMG Mercy, how do you end up in these situations?” lol. Can’t wait for the next one, even though I have to.

Author Bio:

Head Shot of PattyPatricia is the #1 New York Times best selling author of the Mercy Thompson series and has written twenty four novels to date; she is currently writing novel number twenty five. She has short stories in several anthologies, as well as a series of comic books and graphic novels based on her Mercy Thompson and Alpha and Omega series. Patty began her career writing traditional high fantasy novels in 1993, and shifted gears in 2006 to write urban fantasy. Moon Called was the first of her signature series about Mercy; the non-stop adventure left readers wanting more and word of this exciting new urban fantasy series about a shape-shifting mechanic spread quickly. The series has continued to grow in popularity with the release of each book. Patty also writes the Alpha and Omega series, which are set in the same world as the Mercy Thompson novels; what began as a novella expanded into a full new series, all of which debuted on the NY Times bestsellers list as well.

Patty was born in Butte, Montana, back in 1965. If you’re good at math, you’ll have deduced that she’s currently twenty-nine. In fact, she’s been twenty-nine for a while and has no intention of getting any older. Fiction authors don’t obey the laws of space and time, they invent them. Don’t argue, or she’ll make up a dragon right behind you . . .

Patricia was born book-privileged. Her mother was a school librarian, and she shared a room with an older sister who loved to read. Long after they had been put to bed, her sister would use the small night light to read Patty stories; her early favorites were fairy tales. Knights and castles, fair maidens, and monsters of every ilk became their nighttime companions.

Soon, Patty learned to read, and whole worlds were hers to explore. She rode on the Black Stallion, and flew the skies of Pern on a dragon. Sometime during that period she stumbled onto a treasure trove. Her older sister had begun collecting comic books; pristine originals were place in cellophane sleeves and organized in cardboard boxes. When her sister was away, they were removed by grubby fingers smeared with peanut butter and jelly for a clandestine read, returning with a faint smudges and wrinkled pages from reading under the covers. To this day, her sister periodically calls Patty and tells her how much more her original copies of the X-Men would have been worth if left pristine in their sleeves. The number keeps going up.

Patty is a prevarication professional. She lies for a living, telling whoppers and fibs so outrageous that people pay her to fib some more. Her only concession to honesty is that she tells people she’s lying to them, which is what separates a fiction author from a politician. She loves to play with her imaginary friends, and meeting with readers who know her imaginary friends is a treat. Her biggest complaint with writing is that she has far more ideas for stories than time to write them.

Patty and her family reside in Eastern Washington near Tri-Cities, home of Mercy Thompson; yes, it’s a real place! When not working on the next book, she can be found playing truant out in her horse pastures, playing with the newest babies.
