Quanta quotes from Quanta Rewind by Lola Dodge (The Shadow Ravens, Book Four)

Manipulating space-time was only slightly easier than lifting an aircraft carrier with my pinky finger. But why not? I’d done it before and I’d do it again.

Who knew? Maybe I’d be pleasantly surprised and kidnapping would be easier than it sounded.

I wouldn’t want to meet him in a dark alley. Or in an open space. Or at all, in any other circumstances.

I refused to be laughed at by some muscled-up bozo in khakis.

I’d chosen this path. Now, I had to make sure it was worth it.

A GOD OF WAR SEEKING RESTORATION.
AN UNWILLING SACRIFICIAL BRIDE.

BETRAYAL THAT COULD DESTROY THEM BOTH.

“[E]very fiber of my being is woven from the rage of mortals.”

Blazing #BlogTour: Grond: The Raven High by Yuri Hamaganov

GRONDRavenHighGROND: The Raven High
by Yuri Hamaganov
Genre: YA Scifi
Release Date: April 2017

Summary:

In the year 2086, Earth is exhausted. The seas have been emptied, the bedrock and soil stripped of their resources, and the superheated atmosphere churns with terrible storms. Those who can afford to do so live in the limbo of virtual reality, and the billions who suffer in poverty have no work, no clean water, and no security from the chaos.

The only hope for those trapped on a dying Earth are the Changed—the seven bioengineered post-humans who work in their separate manufacturing facilities orbiting high above the planet. Raised from birth for their work and fully matured at ten years old, their genius provides the nanomaterials that have begun to cleanse Earth of the pollutants that have wiped out almost the entire ecosphere.

But for Olga Voronov, youngest of the Changed, the isolation and endless toil are not the greatest of her challenges. Down on Earth there are those who resent and fear her talents—and would prefer that humanity not be given the second chance that only she could make possible …

Excerpt:

CHAPTER SIX: CHANGED

…Paris. December. But this was not the city whose streets Olga loved to prowl on a motorcycle in her early childhood.

Olga and Arina Rodionovna slowly walked along the central streets. The simulator reproduced the thick snowfall and cold wind with exceptional precision. Their fashionable leather boots squished over the slush as they walked down trash-filled sidewalks and past once-fashionable shops whose windows were covered with steel shields and twined with concertina wire. There were no trees left—they had long since been cut down for firewood. Only one out of every ten street lamps operated since electricity was so costly. Hydrogen powered vehicles hummed down the street. A large column of smoke rose into the sky from a few blocks away. Shots were heard as rioters and the army traded gunfire. A huge line of people stood in front of a government office. Judging by their looks, they had spent many hours in the cold.

“Nowadays you will see a similar picture in all the major cities,” Arina said. “The situation here is still rather calm. The army still has control of the city center, though they steer clear of the outskirts if they can help it.”

“Are all those people unemployed?”

“Yes, and they are seeking food rations. Most of them have never had a permanent occupation. And never will.”

Olga shrugged. It wasn’t her problem.

There was too little work left for Earth’s huge population. Hardly ten percent of them were employed. The space industry with its high efficiency had ruthlessly destroyed most enterprises on Earth. The farming industry had also changed drastically over the pat fifty years, with fully automatic facilities needing almost no personnel.

Finally, there were Olga and other representatives of the Changed from her generation. The symbiosis of the artificial intellect and nanomachines has given them virtually unlimited capabilities. And so the billions of ordinary people had become useless for anything except standing in lines for free rations.

Olga had never felt sorry about that, taking this state of things as a matter of course. Since her early childhood she understood that you can’t stand in the way of progress or progress will crush you. These people couldn’t compete with her, and so in compliance with the omnipotent laws of evolution, they were doomed to defeat and squalor. The sole thing that worried Olga was that sooner or later she too could be replaced. This option was not unlikely either.

“We observe the classical vicious circle,” Arina said. “No work, no money. No money, no trade. No trade, no work. Nowadays to live on Earth, one must be either very rich or very poor. All others have gone to the orbit.”

The sirens howled out their warnings of the commencement of the curfew and the closure of borders between the districts. Olga shuddered as a gust of cold wind hurled wet snow into her face. Even as the rest of the world baked, Europe had frozen with the cessation of Gulf Stream current.

“Well, Raven, have you decided not to return to Earth when your contract expires?”

Olga stopped. Her glance took in the dark streets, barred windows, dismal figures.

“Here? I don’t think so … But where shall I go?”

by Melanie Hooyenga
Genre: YA Sports Romance
Release Date: February 24th 2017

Summary from Goodreads:

Fifteen-year old Cally accepted her fate as one of the guys, so when she meets Blake, a hot snowboarder who sees her for more than her aerials on the slopes, she falls fast and hard. But their romance can only last as long as vacation.

Or so she thinks.

A twist of fate—well, her Dad opening another brewery in a new town—lands her in Blake’s school, but the charismatic boy she fell for wants nothing to do with her, and worse, the Snow Bunnies, the popular clique, claim her as their newest recruit.

Cally must learn to be true to herself—all while landing a spot on the ski team and figuring out who she is without her old friends. And when she finds out what Blake is hiding, she learns the rules on the slopes apply to more than just skiing.

EXCERPT:

I double check that Blake is still in line for hot chocolate, then whip out my phone and fire off a text to Sophia. Found a hottie. Made contact.

My good knee bounces in time to my heart, which hasn’t settled since Blake deposited me in a chair near the fireplace and pulled off his helmet, revealing shaggy brown hair that falls just above his crazy-blue eyes. The image in my head of us sipping hot chocolate next to the fire is beyond corny, but who am I to argue when they were the only open chairs.

My phone vibrates. Spill.

Major wipeout. He came to my rescue. Carried me into the lodge.

I check his progress in line and shake my head. What universe have I landed in where the hottest guy here—and the nicest, and not to mention a kickass boarder—is trying to impress me? It’s not like I’m not interested in boys, but I’ve always been so focused on skiing that by middle school I wedged myself in as one of the guys and now it’s too late to change it. The few dates I’ve been on were with boys outside my circle and they always get scared off once they meet my pack of friends and see how protective they are of me.

And you’re having his babies when?

I snort just as Blake sits in the chair next to me. “Was it something I said?”

“Sorry! It’s my friend. She’s a little… never mind.” I tuck my phone into my coat pocket and take a Styrofoam cup from him. Our fingers graze and a little zing of electricity rockets up my arm and straight into my belly. I clear my throat, hoping he doesn’t notice that I can’t seem to speak.

He sets a bag of ice on the table, slides another chair close to me so I can prop up my leg, and sits in the chair next to me. I grab the bag and roll the ice around to break up any chunks, then plop it on my knee. I should really pull up my snowpants for the ice to help, but the bunny long underwear is staying in hibernation.

Once he’s sure I’m situated, he leans forward so his elbows are on the table and points one finger like he’s counting. “So here’s what I know. You’re one of the best trick skiers I’ve ever seen.” He points a second finger. “You’re here with your dad and…?” His head tilts as he waits for me to reply.

“Just my dad.”

He points the third finger. “And you’re gorgeous. Now this would be enough for your average snowboarding fool, but I want to know more.”

Who talks like that? I look around, expecting people to be staring, but no one’s paying attention to us. “Am I being punked?”

He furrows his brows. “What?”

“I’ve never once had anyone say something like that to me. I figure it must be a joke.”

A blush creeps up his cheeks and he pushes his hair off his forehead. “No joke. I had a lot of time to think when you were with the ski patrol dude. But I mean it. The girls at my school are too worried about their hair to put on a helmet and pull the flip you did.”

I shrug. “I guess I don’t worry about those things.”

He smiles and my belly does another somersault. “And that’s why I want to know more about you. Where are you from?”

I take a deep breath and force myself to relax. While I don’t want to fall into the friend zone with Blake, I know how to talk to guys. Pretend he’s Hunter or Sam. “I’m from Vermont. South Burlington. I’m on the ski team and wasn’t supposed to try that last trick without my coach, but the powder here is so different from back home I couldn’t resist.” I glance out the window in the direction of the scene of my crash and smile. “He’ll be happy you forced me onto the sled.”

His dimple deepens. “Right place, right time. So this is your first time in Colorado?”

I nod. “What about you?”

His smile hardens for a millisecond, but it’s back so fast I wonder if I imagined it. “I’m from Lake Tahoe. The California side.”

“Ooh, a Cali boy?”

He rolls his eyes. “We’re not all bad.”

“No, I’m intrigued. Us east coast girls don’t have too many run-ins with surfer boys.”

He bites his lower lip. “I don’t surf. I live in the mountains.”

“Oh, I figured you’re such a good snow boarder that you must surf in the summer.” He’s quiet, and I scramble for a new topic. I don’t know what made him clam up, but I can’t blow this in the first five minutes. “How long are you here for?”

The tension in his shoulders relaxes and he leans back in his chair. “‘Til Sunday.”

“Me too.” I can’t stop the goofy smile that plasters itself to my face. I met this boy less than an hour ago and I’m acting like we’re already in love. Which makes my cheeks flame even hotter.

Portrait of cute teen couple in winter clothes.

EXCERPT:

They reached the bottom of the stairs and plunged through an open door into a dust-filled atrium. A gray sunlight flowed into the shattered windows, highlighting the smoke from the Pit that found its way in, but was unable to find its way out. Brakken pushed open the outer doors and glimpsed into a courtyard. A few Downers were scattered about. One was sitting in the corner wrapped in a porous blanket, while a few others were standing and whispering in a noonday shadow. Several more unsavory looking Downers were watching them from a balcony.

“Where are we?” asked Durgan.

“You’ll see,” said Brakken.

One behind the other, with Brakken in front, they walked through the courtyard, opened up a black walnut door, and bounded up several flights of stairs until they came to yet another door. Brakken knocked and waited. Durgan surveyed the area and knew they were not in the part of the Waste he would feel comfortable visiting without Brakken. A minute passed and Brakken knocked again. This time it opened, and standing before Durgan was a young man who looked to be about the age of seventeen. He was short, stocky, with dark hair.

“Who’s this?” asked the young man.

“I’d rather not tell you standing out here,” said Brakken.

The young man eyed Durgan up and down, and then stepped out of the way to allow them to enter. Before the young man could ask his question again, Brakken smiled and said, “This, Hegg, is Durgan, captain of the city’s watch.”

Hegg smiled at Brakken, and then glanced at Durgan. Suddenly, however, he stumbled back, his young eyes widening in recognition. “I know you!” he cried out, pointing his finger at Durgan and tripping over his own feet. “You are the captain of the city’s watch. What’d you do, Brakken? You led him right to us!”

“Oh, shut-up!” Brakken smiled, clearly enjoying the reaction. “What I meant to say is that he used to be the captain of the city’s watch. Now!” Brakken lifted up Durgan’s sleeve. “He’s a Downer. And he’s going to help us.”

“Help you?” cried Durgan. “Help you do what?”

Brakken ignored the question. “Get Koval.”

Hegg glared at Durgan out of the corner of his eye before he left, leaving Durgan and Brakken alone.

“What are you talking about?” hissed Durgan. “What is all of this? Who’s that boy? Who’s Koval?”

“Just be patient,” smiled Brakken. “I’ll let you know in a minute.”

Grabbing Brakken by the shirt, Durgan wrenched him close, but the smile never left the young man’s freckled face. “Tell me now or I’m out of here. My wife is alone in your house, defenseless. I don’t have time for these games.”

Someone behind Durgan coughed, and when he spun around, he spotted Hegg standing next to another young man. Durgan released Brakken and scowled at them.

“Who are you?” he snarled.

Brakken spread his arms wide open and grinned. “We, Durgan, are the Branded. You met Hegg. The other one is Koval. We are the beginning of your army.”

“Hot damn! Who be dat fine lady?” Joey knows I ain’t a lady, and I wish he’d shut his trap, but I don’t tell him so. I turn my head away and roll my eyes twice as I head past the bar. “Who’s the lucky guy who’s gonna get some of dat tonight?”

“Ain’t gonna be you, Joey.” And sure, maybe I say it out loud, but not loud enough for him to hear, ‘cause I don’t want to piss him off. Pissed-off dudes can be dangerous.

I only been working here a week-and-a-day now, but I’m pretty sure my coworkers are cool with the way I dress. At work, I gotta wear my green Tiki Hut T-shirt and tan shorts, just like everybody else. But I don’t hide my lady side down here on Placida Island, and I ain’t never gonna hide her again. The sad fact is, the way I show the world who I am is all fucked-up. But it is what it is, and that’s why I ain’t never goin’ back to Boston—I can’t go back up there and be me. Not if I wanna live to see another day, and shit.

“Ain’t you people never seen a boy dressed up nice and pretty before?” I shout it back over my shoulder, flashing a big grin, knowing that my lips look good, all shiny and red.

“Vedie, have yourself a good evening!” one of the ladies calls out. I smile inside ‘cause I think my coworkers like really me. I ain’t used to being liked just the way I am. Maybe anything goes on this tropical island in the middle of freakin’ nowhere.

I look around to see if Crazy Matt is lurking around the bar. Crazy Matt—that’s the name all of the waiters at The Only Tiki Hut gave to this gorgeous, but pissed-off-looking customer I made a play for earlier tonight. I actually leaned down and whispered into his ear, “Take me home tonight, Mateo.” I like how Mateo sounds way better than Crazy Matt, and it’s pretty much the same damn name, at least it is in my neck of the woods.

I didn’t stop and wait for his answer ‘cause I know it don’t work that way with guys like him. If Mateo wants to hook up with me, he’ll make it happen. If he don’t want it, there ain’t nothin’ on God’s green earth that I can do to make him change his mind. But I reminded him real clear that I was one of his options, and then I’d moved on.

Author Bio:

Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—all named after saints—and five nonpedigreed cats—all named after the next best thing to saints, Boston Red Sox players. Her husband of twenty years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about that, as it is a sensitive subject.

Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled young men and their relationships, and she believes that sex has a place in a love story, but not until it is firmly established as a love story. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with romantic tales of tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She is thankful to Dreamspinner Press for providing her with an alternate place to stash her stories.

Mia is proud of her involvement with the Human Rights Campaign and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of marital equality. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.

Blazing #BlogTour: Standing Ground by Alice Rachel

Standing Ground
Alice Rachel
(Under Ground, #2)
Publication date: October 27th 2016
Genres: Dystopian, Romance, Young Adult

When the authorities strike to regain control over the riots in Eboracum City and use drastic measures as retaliation against the civilians, the citizens are forced to fight back to survive. A virus has spread through the Underground, taking down the refugees one by one, soon contaminating the rebels. If Thia wants to save the ones she loves, she will have to retrieve the cure, quickly. But certain decisions are costly, and not all actions are free of consequences.

Goodreads / Amazon

INTERVIEW:

  1. How long have you been writing?

I think it will be five years this May. That’s when I started the series.

  1. Where did your love of storytelling come from?

I love to read, and I needed to create a story of my own. I needed to create Chi.

  1. What was the hardest part of writing this book?

This book is highly emotional. Many bad things happen, and that was emotionally hard and exhausting for me. I had to take a month’ break from writing when the book came out because I couldn’t handle any more emotions for a while.

  1. What inspires you?

Things that infuriate me in our world today.

  1. Who inspires you?

My husband inspires me to be a better person. He’s much more understanding than I am. I try to be more like him…and usually fail at it. =p

  1. What are some day jobs that you have held?  If any of them impacted your writing, share an example.

I’ve been a bookseller and a French teacher. Neither of them influenced my writing. My daytime job does delay my writing, though, but that’s okay.

  1. What do you like to read in your free time?

YA anything, NA romance, horror, graphic novels.

  1. Do you aim for a set amount of words/pages per day?

No. I also don’t write every day. I write when I can. I believe setting a page count kills creativity.

  1. What is your favorite motivational phrase?

Mmmm, I don’t know that I have a phrase that motivates me. But my favorite quote is: “He jests at scars that never felt a wound.” I think that’s fairly accurate. I have seen it throughout my life, and it is a quote that applies to the characters in my series too.

  1. What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Write for yourself, not for money. Writing isn’t where the writing is. Be wary of how you represent people in your novels, especially marginalized people who deserve fair representation.

Thank you so much for the interview.

by Christina Bauer
Genre: YA Supernatural
Audiobook Release Date: 3/28/17
Monster House Books

Summary from Goodreads:

Eighteen year old Myla Lewis is a girl who loves two things: kicking ass and kicking ass. She’s not your every day quasi-demon, half-demon and half-human, girl. For the past five years, Myla has lived for the days she gets to fight in Purgatory’s arena. When souls want a trial by combat for their right to enter heaven or hell, they go up against her, and she hasn’t lost a battle yet.

But as she starts her senior year at Purgatory High, the arena fights aren’t enough to keep her spirits up anymore. When the demons start to act weird, even for demons, and the King of the Demons, Armageddon, shows up at Myla’s school, she knows that things are changing and it’s not looking good for the quasi-demons. Myla starts to question everything, and doesn’t like the answers she finds. What happened seventeen years ago that turned the quasi-demons into slave labor? Why was her mom always so sad? And why won’t anyone tell her who her father is? Things heat up when Myla meets Lincoln, the High Prince of the Thrax, a super sexy half-human and half-angel demon hunter. But what’s a quasi-demon girl to do when she falls for a demon hunter? It’s a good thing that Myla’s not afraid of breaking a few rules. With a love worth fighting for, Myla’s going to shake up Purgatory.

Series Discounts

Monster House Books is celebrating the launch of the audiobook version of the best seller Angelbound, both on iTunes & Audible! As a result, every launched book in the series is only $1.99, aka more than 50% off…And that includes Angelbound ACCA, which was only released a few months ago!

For those of you who are new to the series, here’s a quick overview of the books that are now on sale from their author, Christina Bauer:
Angelbound (Angelbound Origins #1)
Book 1 – Angelbound

“This is the original story of Myla, a part demon girl who loves to kick ass in Purgatory’s Arena. She falls in love with a part-angel Prince (who’s also a demon hunter.) Mayhem ensues. You can check out the book trailer here.
BONUS: If you buy the audiobook version of Angelbound, then the ebook is free in March! How cool is that?

Scala (Angelbound Origins #2)
Book 2 – Scala

“Myla and Lincoln team up to save Purgatory. They also smooch a lot. Did I mention this was my un-official summary of each book based on what I like most about them? Well, it is. I like the smooching in this one.”

Acca (Angelbound Origins #3)
Book 3 – Acca – NEW!!!

“In this NEW installment, Myla and Lincoln take down the evil house of Acca while trying to get hitched. I love the final scene in this book which features an awesome tune by the Rolling Stones. Nuff said.”

Thrax (Angelbound Origins #4)
Book 4 – Thrax

“This is the story of how Myla’s first kid is born while she runs off to the Earth’s surface with Cissy to save Lincoln. Okay, full disclosure: I didn’t put Thrax into the discount structure because it’s not due to launch until September 26th of this year, and launches are how I pay my bills. At least I don’t lie to you :-)”

Book Cover

Book 5 – Armageddon

“This installment is all about the demon we love to hate, Armageddon (I call him Armie.) Myla goes to Hell to save her son and kick that f*ucker’s ass. Good times.”

Book Cover
Book 1 – Angelbound Offspring – Maxon

“This is the story of Myla’s son all growed up. No, I didn’t have to put him at $1.99 since this is technically a separate series, but MHB is kind of awesome like that.”

Book Cover

Book 2 – Angelbound Offspring – Portia

“My favorite-eat cover of all time! This is the story of Myla’s daughter and how she maybe gets involved with a hottie dragon king.”

So there you have it: six books discounted to celebrate the launch of Angelbound on audiobook! Be sure to order ASAP—these are limited-time discounts and will end soon!

 EXCERPT:

***SPOILER ALERT***

The Prince guides me to sit on the lip of the fountain. I hop up onto the edge, feeling the warm stone beneath me, my legs dangling below. Stepping back, Lincoln examines me, his eyes glistening with wonder.

“There.” He hooks his thumbs into the waistband of his leather pants. “That’s how you looked when I first saw you by the lake.”

I nod. That’s right; he found me fighting Doxy demons in the water. “So, that’s why you brought me here?” I scratch my cheek. That’s a little strange.

“Well, I think about that night all the time. Maybe too much.” He shoots me a shy smile. “That sounds kind of crazy, doesn’t it?”

“Depends.” I move my mouth to one side, considering. “What’s the interest?”

He rubs his neck with his hand. “It’s a bit of a story, actually. I was chasing down some Doxy demons at the Ryder stables. I thought you were another thrax, tracking the same pack.”

I mock-frown. “Another guy, of course.”

He sets his hand on his bare chest. “Guilty as charged.” He steps closer, my heart thuds harder in my rib cage. “You disappeared into the water. I thought you’d be drowned, but you came out fighting.” He pauses before me, setting his warm hands on my bare knees. A thrill of heat whirls about my belly. His palms are calloused in all the right ways for a warrior.

With gentle pressure, Lincoln guides my legs apart. My heart rate goes through the roof. “You were fighting like a demon yourself, eyes glowing red in the darkness. And you were laughing.” The Prince presses his firm body against my soft curves. My breath hitches. Damn, that feels good.

Lincoln notices my little gasp and smiles. “I saw you were a woman, a warrior.” He leans in close, his mouth a breath above my own. “A force of nature. From that day on, I’ve thought of you, that night, and the water.”

I inhale deeply, ready to say ‘I never met anyone like you before, either. You make me crazy, too. In a good way.’ I speak, but two words only: “I understand.”

His voice comes out low and husky. “Good.”

Our mouths meet, fierce and rough, every flick of the Prince’s tongue driving more heat between my legs. My arms slide about Lincoln’s bare shoulders, sensing his velvet-soft skin over solid muscle. Suddenly, I want to run my hands over every inch of his body. Lincoln’s fingers press around my thighs, tracing the hem of my tunic. Desire rockets through me.

A thin bolt of lightning strikes the ground a few yards away. Low rolls of thunder shake the air.

My head snaps to the spot of grass where the lightning hit. It’s a smoldering patch of black by the fountain’s edge. “Did you see that?” This is the third time lightning strikes when I feel strong emotions around Lincoln. Even I’m having a hard time pretending it’s a coincidence.

“No.” Lincoln kisses my neck, then gently bites my earlobe. My legs go wobbly beneath me.

“But Lincoln, aren’t you worried about the–”

He frames my face with his fingertips. “No.” Fire burns in his mismatched eyes. “Kiss me, Myla.”
