Summary from Goodreads:

Anita has never been ordinary, she’s stuck out like a sore thumb her entire life; not only can she see the energy of others, a rare skill, but she’s won every Body challenge she’s ever entered. So when the powerful, good looking Descendants, Marcus and Alexander, mysteriously arrive in Empire, her difference attracts and keeps their attention.

Once in Empire, the sudden death of ruling Body Descendant, Christiana, sets in motion a number of events; a quest for the treacherous Austin to find the girl Christiana had been looking for; a challenge where Anita stands out more vibrantly than ever before; a perilous dip in the world’s energy; and a dangerous belief among the people that they will never truly be free. Powerful factions soon form within the ruling elite and when a trusted friend and mentor reaches out to ask for Anita’s help, she has to make a choice; help her friend and betray the one she loves, or do nothing and watch the people starve.

Excerpt:

After three, enormous courses and a significant quantity of various types of wine, Anita decided it was time to open the dancing.  In line with tradition, there would be no announcement, but Anita and Marcus would take to the floor at a time of their choosing, throwing a signal to the band and surprising the audience by launching into their dance.

Anita reached over and took Marcus’ hand under the table.  She inclined her head in the direction of the open space between the banquet tables and he smiled in agreement.  He led Anita around the top table, waving to the band as they passed.  The band immediately sprang into life, striking up a jaunty number and the room quietened in expectant anticipation.  Anita could hardly contain her excitement.  She loved to dance and leaving Marcus by the edge of the tables, she spun her way to the middle of the floor.  Marcus ran after her and caught her just as she stopped spinning, leant her backwards seductively, then restored her to an upright position in a slow, fluid, silky movement.  They smiled at each other as they came back face to face, each reminded of their dance on the cliff, before Marcus almost violently spun Anita out and back in again.  They tangoed around the floor, paying no attention to their audience, who watched open-mouthed at the display.  They had all expected a polite waltz to start proceedings, and certainly no one had expected this.

After a couple of minutes of the borderline inappropriate spectacle, complete with too much body contact, a number of improper looks, and all topped off by the suggestive backing track, the others eligible to join the first dance got up and made their way to the floor.  All expect Austin, whose face was like thunder as he watched his son’s embarrassing exhibition with the girl he was beginning to hate.  Marcus and Anita finished their opener with a flourish, Marcus spinning Anita around so they were back to back before lifting her high on his shoulders, her arms outstretched.  He spun several times before letting her slide back to the floor, having masterfully positioned them to join the set laid out by the others in preparation for the formal dancing.  He kissed her hand racily and threw her one last risqué look as they took their places.

About the Author

h-r-mooreHarriet was born in Germany in 1987, the family returning to the UK, to Dorset shortly afterwards. She lived there until she was 5, her grandfather teaching her the basics of cheating at cards and swindling chocolate, her mother starting to instil a (some would argue) unhealthy relationship with cake, and the neighbours demonstrating that some people don’t understand cherry blossom is there to be picked, mixed with mint and water and sold as perfume.
Then there was Scotland; stealthy guinea pig breeding, riding horses, advanced cards, more cake, then to Devon and school in Exeter. She loved maths in the early years, but by the time she got to A Level, Sociology was her favourite subject, opening her eyes to things she’d never before considered, namely, nobody is really right, nobody is really normal and primary socialisation has a lot to answer for.
At the age of about 12, Harriet started rowing for Exeter Rowing Club. This quickly took over her life and before too long she was clad in lycra, training 6 days a week and competing at events around the country.

After finishing her A Levels, Harriet went to university in St Andrews, studying Philosophy for two years, then switching to Management. She was particularly interested in the ‘people’ elements of her course and especially the areas concerning how people create and react to change. After four very civilised years by the sea, she ventured to London, to foray into the strange world of insurance (surprisingly, more interesting than you might think). She worked as a Project Manager on large change programmes before founding her own consultancy in 2015.

Harriet now lives in Hertfordshire with her husband Chris and daughter Atia. When she isn’t, writing, editing, eating, running around after her toddler, or imagining how much better life would be with the addition of a springer spaniel, she occasionally finds the time to make hats.

Moving on doesn’t always have to mean goodbye.

Widowed makeup artist Jane Sullivan is more comfortable keeping her husband’s memory alive than dating a pool full of sharks. Ella, her 4 year-old daughter, is her whole world.

When Jane meets Lucas Oliver, famous cover model, it’s hate at first sight. His playboy persona rubs her the wrong way.

Accustomed to every woman fawning over him, Lucas is drawn to the shy, uncompromising single mom and completely melts at the sight of Ella. He is determined to convince Jane that sometimes a second chance can mend a broken heart.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble

EXCERPT:

Heavy footsteps behind me warn Lucas is awake. My heart pounds when I glance at him. Barefooted, he strolls in wearing only dark jeans low on his toned hips, zipped but not buttoned, partially revealing black, David Beckham underwear. Water glistens in his messy hair, still damp from the shower. A red sweater lands on the countertop in front of the fridge, which he leaves open while he finishes one bottle of water. He goes for a second bottle, his bare, muscle-ripped chest camera perfect.

“Enjoying what you see?” Lucas leans against the fridge, muscles shifting on his abdomen and arms. He’s not smiling, but rather defiant looking.

“I hate to bring it to your attention, but there’s a girl in this house, and I’d appreciate if you wore clothes at all times. Thank you.” As to confirm my words Ella’s laughter penetrates through the window.

“And I hate to bring it to your attention, but last night I wasn’t hitting on you. You’re not my type.” His freshly shaved jaw twitches, and it’s the last I see before he turns his back on me, pulling things out of the fridge. From jam to cheese and sausages, cold cuts and fruits, the countertop turns into a display of colors and aromas. Next he spreads butter on a croissant and finishes it in two, quick bites. He hasn’t touched anything he took out of the fridge, gorging himself on croissants and butter, all the while cocking an eyebrow.

I’m tempted to say “sour grapes” but it’s probably not a good idea. He’s pissed off and I like to believe my refusal to fall in his arms is the reason why. I go for, “Thanks for clarifying that for me. I was worried you were in for a heartbreak.”

“You wish,” Lucas says between bites. He looks like a hamster with food stuffed on both sides of his mouth. He hasn’t closed the fridge’s door but walks away to the coffee pot. I’ll never understand why people leave the fridge open. Can’t stand it, and decide to go close it before he returns to clog his arteries. One quick move and the door is closed, but I don’t move fast enough. When I turn to walk away, Lucas hovers over me. My eyes level with his lower chest. The fridge feels cold against my back. I look up at him and swallow hard. The man is just overpowering and insanely sexy.

He smirks. “Can’t stay away from me?”

“You’re wasting energy.” At least my voice doesn’t tremor.

Lucas’s left hand comes up as if to touch my face, but instead it rests above my head, on the fridge. “Why do you care?”

“I don’t. I’m just thoughtful of other people’s property.”

“Perfect Jane. How many Nobel Prizes have you received so far?”

“You’re such a conceited jerk. How can you stand yourself?” I lift my chin and prop my palms on his chest, forcing him to move off me. The more I struggle the more he laughs, a devilish and loud laugh.

Author Bio:

Ever since I began writing and publishing books I’ve been on the run, always trying to write the next page, the next chapter, the next book. Every story was another journey, another discovery of what I could do and another evolution. All these years my motto was it doesn’t matter who I am or where I come from, but what I leave behind is. I thought I have it all figured out.

Socrates, one of the biggest philosophers to ever grace humanity once said, “I am talking a crock of s***.” I had no idea this expression dated hundreds of years ago and belongs to him, but who am I to argue with him? Needless to say, after some soul searching I realized my motto was a . . . pot of smelly stuff. I had a meltdown because, if you think about it, why would what I leave behind matter more than who I am here and now in this very moment? How will I ever know if what I left behind mattered with no way of seeing it? How am I gonna enjoy it? Think Socrates; does he know how much he touched humankind? Does he know people still remember him centuries later? And if he knows, does it make a difference?

I’m not sure. Frankly I doubt with all my heart it makes any difference to him. He’s gone, like I’ll be gone one day and instead of beating myself up to leave something behind me, I’m going to learn how to live here, now and totally enjoy it. No more worrying about tomorrow, but live today. No more five-year plans, but rather let the sun soak my skin, the air fill my lungs and the grass touch my feet. After all, I only live once.

#BlogTour A Thousand Letters by Staci Hart #NewRelease

sbpr-atl-bt

“Lyrical, heartbreaking, and emotionally intense, A THOUSAND LETTERS is a beautiful portrait of an undying love that deserves a second chance.”

Melanie Harlow, USA Today Bestselling Author

A Thousand Letters, an all-new emotional standalone by Staci Hart is LIVE!!!

cover-wrap-atl

Sometimes your life is split by a single decision.

I’ve spent every day of the last seven years regretting mine: he left, and I didn’t follow. A thousand letters went unanswered, my words like petals in the wind, spinning away into nothing, taking me with them.

But now he’s back.

I barely recognize the man he’s become, but I can still see a glimmer of the boy who asked me to be his forever, the boy I walked away from when I was young and afraid.

Maybe if he’d come home under better circumstances, he could speak to me without anger in his voice. Maybe if I’d said yes all those years ago, he’d look at me without the weight of rejection in his eyes. Maybe if things were different, we would have had a chance.

One regretted decision sent him away. One painful journey bought him back to me. I only wish I could keep him.

About the Author

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey.

From roots in Houston to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

The Ashes and the Sparks Guest Post

Alternate History (about the “rules” and “limits” when writing Alt Hist)

As with most genres, althistory begins with one question: what if? What if Rome never fell? What if the Nazis won World War II? What if the Dark Ages turned into a period of great scientific advancement, or what if dragons really did exist in Ancient China? The possibilities are infinite, which is part of what makes the alternate history such a fascinating topic to explore. My novel takes place in the 1880’s, a period that many would recognize as Victorian. There’s just one key difference: Queen Victoria is dead. Gone. Assassinated. And when you remove such key players, society obviously develops far differently from what happened in our timeline. Really, that’s the core of what althistory is: creating a new, ‘alternate’ timelines.

Few writers enjoy the idea of rules and limits, and as far as genre boundaries go, alternate history offers lots of flexibility. You want the fairies of Irish folktales to be real? Sure. You want massive, gilded airships to be Europe’s primary mode of transportation? Go for it. You want Da Vinci and Michelangelo to be rival vampire-hunting vigilantes? Why not! Time travel, steampunk, and post-apocalyptic dystopias are all totally reasonable subgenres to delve into, but you’ve got to remember to keep the ‘history’ part too. You’ve got to remember that Earth –real Earth- has got to be the basic setting. Even if the magical land of Altoria mimics 3rd century Peru, if there are no connections to reality, then you’re writing straight-up fantasy. There has to be a connection to the real historical timeline. Of course, liberties can be taken; The Ashes and the Sparks involves a completely fictional society based on a mishmash of real Nordic cultures, set on a completely fictional archipelago of islands. But since it’s still set in this universe, with connections to other, real countries, it’s a go.

Another point to remember, is that usually, you only want to shift one major event. It gets way too confusing if the Spanish Armada successfully conquers Britain, leading to a chain of events that make them win the American Revolutionary War, but then a plague wipes out the entire country, so the moon landing never happens, so….lost? Exactly. Keep it simple; it’s amazing how a single event can create a massive ripple effect. Also, don’t leave plot holes. Since you are dealing with real history, your timeline shift has to be somewhat feasible. Nothing irritates readers more than logic jumps.

So go ahead: assemble all your outbreaks and assassinations, and give the past a twist! Set your chain of events in motion.

review
**I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for an honest read.**
I will be honest with you, I am slowly making my way through the stories. The first story had me a little thrown. I didn’t know exactly what to expect. It was a thoroughly surprising story and had a fitting ending.
My goal was to read Marie Skye’s Affliction. I wanted to know what the story was about because I’d seen the teasers for it. She definitely didn’t disappoint. I absolutely loved this story. The dark with the light had me devouring the pages to the point of screaming when I came to the end. I love stories that make me laugh out loud and want to root for the one that is the unlikely hero. Twisted and exciting all rolled into one.
I’m looking forward to the rest of the stories if these to a simple hints at what’s to come.

PETITION DENIED by Alyson Hale
I pull my wife’s zipper down and yank her dress off, ignoring her kicking against me. With her dark hair fanned out over the pillow and her full, round breasts splayed for my pleasure, I’ve never seen anything more tantalizing. Before I do anything to her, I need to make sure she wants this, but I’m certain she does. Her moans and the obvious hardness of her round, small nipples mean more to me than the fruitless jabs of her knees into my hardened core. When I steal a glance at her pussy, I can’t help but grin at the way it glistens. No matter how hard she fights, she can’t hide her desire for me. It’s written all over every inch of her body. She is still mine.
Easing into my planned night of debauchery, I run my rough hand over her smooth, naked flesh and capture her lips in another kiss.
“Lana Grace Law, you are mine, body, and soul,” I whisper softly between kisses. “Trying to escape me is futile.”
“You’re a bastard,” she growls, her brows drawn down in anger.
I shoot her a grin that makes her pelvis quiver. “I think you’ll come to forgive me enough times.”

EXCITABLE by Brittney Coon
Leo is lying on the bed like a good boy. I tie his hands and feet to the posts and pull the knife out from beneath the sheet I stashed it under.
“Do you want to see what the fucking queen of the sick and damned does with this?” I move the knife back and forth between my fingers.
“Shit,” he hisses. “I don’t want to—”
I straddle him and let the cool blade to touch his collarbone. “You using the mommy card already?”
He presses his head into the bed and chews on his bottom lip. “Fine.”
I let the knife lick his peck, making a small cut. He screws his eyes shut as I kiss the sting away.
“I dare you to untie me.” His voice comes from low in his throat, making me stop from making another cut.
“A dare, huh? You know I can’t back down from a dare…”
“Then let me go and this game is over.”
I toss the knife onto the floor. It clings on the wooden surface. “You done with me already?”
“No. I just want my fucking hands on you. I want you in my mouth. Why don’t we just forget these toys and—”
I untie him and sit on the corner of the bed. “And what, fuck like normal people?”
He licks his lips and brushes his finger over my breast. “We just do whatever animals do…”
“But we’re not falling in love. Deal?”

HER MISTAKE by N. Mills
He pushed my hand away again. “Stop poking me, Belle,” he warned again.
The nickname only ignited my fury more. I could have died tonight or gone to prison. My whole fucking life, I made responsible decisions, and the one night I made a bad one, this guy swooped in and almost ruined everything. I slammed my index into his chest once more. His warm fingers wrapped around my wrist, and he pushed me against the wall. His fist hit the wall next to me. I couldn’t help it, I flinched, and I hated myself for it.
His eyes were bright with anger. I slapped him for making me flinch. Before I knew what was happening, my hands were pinned against the wall above my head. My heart slammed against my ribs, and our heavy breaths mingled together. The air between us shifted.
Our lips collided into a frantic kiss. His hands on my wrists tightened, and he pressed closer to me. He let go of my hands, and I tangled them into his hair as I tried to get closer. He cupped my ass and lifted me from the ground. I wrapped my legs around his waist and shoved his cut from his shoulders. He had me sandwiched between him and the wall as he helped me yank his shirt off, only breaking the kiss to get it over his head. It was like being deprived of oxygen when he pulled away.
I sucked in a sharp breath at the sight of his bare chest. His arms were covered in full sleeves and on his chest sat a jester tattoo, one side of its face the laughing joker, the other half with tears silently falling. His hungry jade eyes met mine and something passed between us. If I was religious, I’d call it spiritual.

Blazing #BlogTour: Sons of Kings Series by Millie Thom

Blog Tour
Shadow of the Raven
Sons of Kings Volume 1
by Millie Thom
Genre: Epic Fantasy
The life of Eadwulf, ten-year old son of the Mercian king, is changed forever when his family is betrayed to the Danes by his treacherous uncle. In a devastating Danish raid,
his father is killed, his mother raped, and along with his tutor and childhood friend, Eadwulf is captured and taken to the Danish lands to be sold as a slave.
As a slave in Jarl Ragnar’s village, Eadwulf’s life is hard, his days unbearably long. But on the return of Ragnar’s eldest son, Bjorn, from his summer raids, his life begins to change. Eadwulf spends the next few years aboard Bjorn’s beloved dragonship, sailing to places he’d never dreamed of, trading and raiding. And although still a slave, he becomes a
well-respected member of Bjorn’s closely knit crew. Yet through it all, the smouldering desire for revenge on those who destroyed his family refuses to abate.
Eadwulf’s story plays out against the backdrop of events unfolding in Wessex in the face of increasing Danish raids. Alfred, the youngest son of the Wessex king, faces family tragedies from an early age, losing first his mother, then his beloved sister when she is married to the new Mercian king: Eadwulf’s treacherous uncle. At his father’s court and the successive courts of his elder brothers, he learns the weighty art of kingship. And,
like Eadwulf, he learns the harshest lesson of all … that a trusted kinsman can so easily turn traitor.
Pit of Vipers
Sons of Kings Volume 2
The ninth century story of King Alfred of Wessex and Eadwulf of Mercia continues to unfold against the ever increasing threat of Danish raids. After years as a slave to the
Danes, Eadwulf has returned to his Mercian homeland and settles to a life of calm domesticity, marred only by his incessant desire for revenge. His frequent absences from his new home, connected to his past life, threaten to destroy the relationships he has fostered and alienate the family he has come to love.
In Wessex, Alfred, now a young man, has spent his childhood at the successive courts of his father and four older brothers, learning the skills of diplomacy and leadership.
Before too long those skills will be put to the test…
The Danish invasion of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms is merciless and relentless. Every year more Norse ships come to join their comrades in a quest to plunder for wealth and gain
control over the people. The Danes take kingdom after kingdom and Alfred and his brother Aethelred wait with baited breath for them to set their sights on Wessex. By 869, their worst fear is realised.
And Eadwulf follows vital leads to the objects of his revenge.
Millie is a former geography and history teacher with a degree in geology and a passion for the Anglo Saxon period. Since retiring a few years ago, she has been indulging this passion by writing her historical fiction trilogy, Sons of Kings, of which she is currently writing Book 3. Millie has also become very fond of writing flash fiction, something that developed
from joining in with various challenges on WordPress. As a consequence, she has also recently published a book of 85 flash fiction pieces of 100 to 1,000 words, entitled A Dash of Flash.
Millie is the mother of six grown up children, and after living in a number of places in England, she and her husband now live in a small village in Nottinghamshire. When not
writing, Mille enjoys long walks in the countryside and visiting historic sites and re-enactments. She is also an avid traveller, swimmer and baker of cakes! Originally from the seaside town of Southport in Lancashire, she still misses the smell of the sea.

Title: Blackbird
Author: Molly McAdams
Series: A Redemption Novel
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Releasing February 28th, 2017

mmblackbirdbookcover5x8_bw_high-fixed
“Hands down the best read of 2016. Molly takes her writing game to a whole different level—one that most authors rarely see.” – #1 New York Times bestselling author, Rachel Van Dyken

synopsis

From New York Times bestselling author Molly McAdams comes a powerhouse romantic suspense that will have you questioning your morals and second guessing your view on love.

I live in a world few know exist. I’ve trained for this. I know what to say, what to do, and how to act. I’ve perfected the lethal calm required for this life.

Now it’s time to buy my first girl. But all it takes is one look at the brave girl who starts singing mid-auction for that calm to slip.

Briar Chapman is going to be the death of me, and I don’t care. I’ll take every day with her until that death comes, and I’ll welcome it when it does.

On the outside, Lucas Holt is what nightmares are made of. A man cloaked in darkness, with sin-filled eyes and an enticing grin. A devil so devastatingly beautiful and cruel that his very presence instills fear.

But beneath his terrifying, ever-calm exterior is an affectionate man haunted by a past that refuses to stay buried. And Lucas looks at me as though he’s finally found the only person who can make it all go away.

We’re a battle of the brightest day and the darkest night—and I want to lie in the wake of our war.

Molly grew up in California but now lives in the oh-so-amazing state of Texas with her husband, daughter, and fur babies. When she’s not diving into the world of her characters, some of her hobbies include hiking, snowboarding, traveling, and long walks on the beach … which roughly translates to being a homebody with her hubby and dishing out movie quotes. She has a weakness for crude-humored movies and fried pickles, and loves curling up in a fluffy comforter during a thunderstorm … or under one in a bathtub if there are tornados. That way she can pretend they aren’t really happening.

The F Student
Xyla Turner
Publication date: January 10th 2017
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult

Cassius Rice, A.K.A., Cash has not done well in his college classes for over a year. With one semester to go, his father cut him off financially, leaving Cash out of luck. With no other options, he took up an offer that he later regrets. Sleep with his professor and record it, then he would have the money to obtain his college degree.

Simple enough for Cash.

What he did not expect was the Professor’s Teaching Assistant to block his efforts nor did he expect the underground fighting world to be so lucrative. All he wanted was to accomplish his quest and graduate.

Find out what happens when this F student applies himself in more ways than one.

Stay tuned for The D Student, The C Student, The B Student and The A Student.

EXCERPT:

“Ah, yes. Mr. Rice. It’s good to hear from you,” the woman responded when I told her who I was on the phone.

“I received your letter about the cancellation of aid and I was hoping to speak with you about my options. If there are any.”

“Right.” The line went silent. “Well, how about you come into my office?  We can sit down and really map out your options, if there are any available.”

She emphasized the last part of her statement.

“Look, lady. I don’t mean any disrespect but let’s not waste each other’s time. I’ve fucked up horribly and I got nowhere else to turn. You sent me the letter mentioning other options but you and I both know I haven’t done shit for a year and a half now. You can see my grades prior to that. We know I’m more than capable, but it’s been a helluva a year. I’m not trying to give you excuses but I’m just saying, if there’s a chance, I’ll be at your office in thirty minutes. If not, then just tell me that.”

I had nothing to lose but I didn’t want to go around getting my hopes up either.

“Well,” she started. “I’ll see you in an hour.”

Then she hung up.
