Blazing #BlogTour: Elemental Lies by Elle Middaugh

Elemental Lies
Elle Middaugh
(The Essential Elements, #2)
Publication date: July 24th 2017
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

Valerie Moore is an Elemental, a person who commands one of the classical elements of wind, water, fire, or earth. She’s special, though. She controls two—fire and water—though sometimes it seems like they control her.

After the accidental exposure of Elementals to humanity, Valerie finds herself—and all of her kind—struggling to attain equality. Three different groups fight to secure leadership, and with all of their hidden agendas, she doesn’t know which side to choose. The balance between peaceful cohabitation and all-out war is precarious, at best.

When a chance meeting brings Val and earth Elemental Cade Landston back together, everything changes. She realizes what she knew in the beginning—that he’s the one she wants. Her desire to win him over draws her closer to him, and his vengeful mission to hunt down her murderous grandfather brings them both closer to trouble.

From mysterious doppelgangers to reckless rescue missions, scapegoat bombings, and evolving Elemental powers, Valerie strains to keep up.

All she knows is she must stop her grandfather at all costs. To do so, she has to figure out the truth, but how can she do so when almost everyone she knows has been telling lies?

EXCERPT:

The moment the cold hit my face, I paused on the porch and looked around. The wind whistled and the river ice crackled, but those were the only sounds. It felt like such a ghost town. All that was missing were the tumbleweeds, and I supposed, the ghosts.

What was the best way to go about avoiding the curfew? Obviously, I didn’t want to be seen, but I wasn’t even sure if humans lived on this side of town; I was so behind in Human-Elemental Relations 101. This close to the river, that would probably be the easiest route to take, but what would a human think if they saw me wade into the water and simply disappear?

After a few moments, I realized I didn’t really have any other options. If I freaked people out for a short time, then so be it; at least I wouldn’t be caught blatantly breaking the rules by strolling down the street.

Sprinting and diving seemed like the best idea—getting it over with quickly. I stole one last peek all around me, and when I was sure it was clear, I started running. There was snow and ice all over the back yard, but it did nothing to slip me up. If anything, it gave me better grip than the earth ever did. I launched from the edge and dove in headfirst. The surface was frozen over, but the ice broke away as if I’d plunged through a layer of feathers. Water met me, cold as the Arctic, though it felt a comfortable lukewarm.

As soon as my momentum slowed, I kicked frantically to the surface and sucked in a deep breath of air. As a Water Elemental, I had acquired the ability to breathe underwater, but it hadn’t yet become second nature. There was something about the long-held notion of drowning that didn’t sit well with me for some reason, even though I knew it was physically impossible; the water would never betray me in that way.

I blew out a quick breath and forced myself to inhale underneath. Once I got over the shock of intentionally breathing in water, it was generally pretty easy to be submerged. The slippery molecules that used to cling to my skin and hinder my motions now bowed gracefully out of my way, allowing me to cut through the river faster than if I’d been wearing flippers.

The murkiness that used to cloud my vision now opened up into a whole new world of underwater eyesight. I could see, in startling clarity, the river bottom littered with rocks and broken tree limbs. I could see algae and coontail pondweeds with sleepy fish hiding throughout to conserve winter energy. I could see for miles, it seemed.

Downriver, the town drifted away and became nothing but dense woodland. After a few yards I probably would have been safe, but I swam for about fifteen minutes just to be sure. At that point, I lifted myself up onto a rocky bank and smoothed down my tunic. It was dry as a bone, as was my cellphone, apparently, because it chose that moment to go off.

I answered quickly to keep the sound to a minimum. In that area, the trees blocked most of the wind, so there wasn’t even that for background noise. It was incredibly silent, but in a more peaceful way, not ominous like it had been in town.

“Hello?”

Rising Tide will sink its fangs into you, keeping you awake into the wee hours of the night
Could Maura’s life get any worse? …turns out it most certainly can.
Isolated and sheltered by her lonely mother, Maura’s never been able to make friends. She seems to drive her classmates away—except for the odd times they pay enough attention to torture her—but she doesn’t understand why. Maura considers herself to be a freak of nature, with her unusually pale skin and an aversion to the sun that renders her violently nauseous. Her belief is only worsened by the fact that almost everyone around her keeps their distance.
Even her own father deserted her before she was born, leaving Maura alone with her emotionally distant mother, Caelyn. Even though Maura is desperate for answers about her unknown parent, Caelyn remains heartbroken and her daughter can’t bring herself to reopen her mother’s wounds. Or is there a more sinister reason Caelyn refuses to utter a word about her long-lost love?
When a cruel prank nearly claims Maura’s life, one of her classmates, Ron, rushes to her rescue. Darkly handsome & mysteriously accepting, Ron doesn’t seem to want to stay away, but Maura is reluctant to get too close, since her mother has announced she’s moving the two of them to Vancouver…nearly 3,000 miles away from their hometown of Indiana, Pennsylvania.
Background from a plum satin fabric with picturesque folds
If life wasn’t already challenging enough, Maura begins to experience bizarre, physical changes her mother seems hell bent on ignoring, compelling Maura to fear for her own life. Vicious nightmares, blood cravings, failing health and the heart-shattering loss of Ron—as well as the discovery of a tangled web of her own mother’s lies—become obstacles in Maura’s desperate quest for the unfathomable truth she was never prepared to uncover.

It was too late then… He was ringing the doorbell. He looked so much braver than I felt. I could see the anger that had crept back into him in the hard set of his lips, the flash in his dark eyes.

Caelyn had torn the door open immediately, anxiety all over her face. She looked at Ron, dumbfounded. She must have then caught sight of some part of me, because she instantly peered around his shoulder to find me standing meekly behind him, clad only in a boy’s shirt that just barely cleared my hips.

“Maura?! What the…” Her eyes fairly popped with dismayed astonishment.

“Hi, Mom.” What an asinine thing to say. I should have at least started with “I’m okay.”

Caelyn just stood there with her mouth hanging open. I felt the fear turn over, like a living thing in my stomach. How was I going to survive our confrontation? How could I even begin to explain everything that had happened that night?

Luckily, I had Ron. “Hi, um, Ms. DeLuca.” He started out sounding very shy, but as my mother’s brows furrowed closer together, he put a stronger edge to his voice. “I came to bring Maura home.” She was still scowling.

“Um…I’m Ron by the way.” He put his hand out to her. She ignored that entirely.

My mother’s glare was venomous. “Maura! Get in the house this instant!”

Oh boy… She thought Ron was at fault for whatever imagined atrocities were going through her brain right at the moment.

“Mom!” I was desperate to put everything right, despite how much trouble I knew I’d be in. “You have it all wrong!”

“I said GET IN THE HOUSE!” she screamed at me, absolute fury flying from her eyes. I’d never seen her so angry before, and I was terrified. “Do I need to ask you again?”

“N-n-no ma’am,” I stuttered. I hurried past Ron, but not without looking up at him with apology in my eyes. I felt horrible for his being put in the middle, just because he’d happened to save my life.

Once inside, I steeled myself for another attempt at speaking to my mother. “Mom, will you please just let me…”

“Don’t say anything, Maura.” Her voice shook. “Do you have any idea what you’ve put me through tonight?”

I was confused then. Did she want me to stay quiet or answer her question?

Ron saved me again. “I think I can explain.” He took a tentative step onto the living room carpet.

I didn’t like the way Caelyn’s head snapped around when she looked at him. “What was your name again?” she asked viciously.

I saw him swallow hard as he answered, “Ron.”

She turned on him then. “Well, Ron!” It sounded like she’d chewed on his name before spitting the one syllable out. “Do you mind telling me why it is you’re out with my daughter when she’s supposed to be with Katie Parker?  And after you’ve answered that, I’d really love to know why you would bring her home wearing only that!!” She pointed the index finger of her shaking hand at me, standing on the plush blue carpet next to our couch, holding onto its arm for support, my knees knocking together.

Ron went a little pale… I couldn’t stand to see my hero wrongly accused.

“Mom! Listen to me! If-if it weren’t for him, for Ron…Mom, I’d be dead right now!” I shouted all the words out quickly before she had a chance to silence me again.

Summary from Goodreads:

Sophia is the first person who understands him and makes him believe that he might get out of their small town, who tells him, he has the potential to be whoever he wants to be and do whatever he wants to do.

But as their relationship unfolds, it is the most devastating of news that will change both of them forever.

EXCERPT:

I had long been a pragmatist, so I was totally unprepared for a complete abandonment of common sense and measured emotions. I spent the next few weeks in a tipsy stupor. She’d implanted herself into me; my head was full of her, making work nigh on impossible. My once day-to-day became a stop gap, a pointless stretch of time where I was not with her. And when we’d meet, we’d spend our evenings in the same spot under the willow tree, talking about our dreams. Sophia would often tell me every single detail of what she’d read the previous night, and though I hadn’t a clue what it meant, I always wanted to know more. For, in many ways, we simply enjoyed each other’s passions as much as we enjoyed each other. Above anything else, being with Sophia made me feel different about myself. I felt lighter, quick to laugh and be laughed at. Life felt easy, and I drank it in on those lazy evenings in the sun. You see, unlike most people, Sophia got more out of me than most people could in a lifetime.

Blazing #BlogTour: Mr. Prescott by Carlos Dash

Mr. Prescott
Carlos Dash
Publication date: August 20th 2017
Genres: New Adult, Romance

I’m the Mayor of London.

I’ve come to New York purely on business. The usual boring meetings with other politicians.

I don’t expect my time here to be exciting in the slightest.

But who’s that woman I met this morning? No, girl. That would be a more accurate term for her.

She’s only twenty-one years old. A college student. Someone who shouldn’t get mixed up with a guy like me.

But I can’t get her out of my mind. Every single time I close my eyes, I see her face.

How can someone I just met do this to me? That’s the kind of stuff that happens in movies. Not real life.

I know this will be a dangerous risk for me, but I can’t help it. I want her. I need her.

And whatever it may do to my career, I won’t stop until I have her.

Mr. Prescott is a standalone New Adult Romance novel told entirely from the point of view of the male lead.

EXCERPT:

My Rolex said it was 7:57 pm.

Nicole would be arriving at any moment. Even if she decided to be fashionably late, I knew I wouldn’t be out there for long. She wouldn’t keep me waiting. No one kept a man like me waiting.

I had one hell of a night ready for her. The amount of effort I put into planning everything… I couldn’t remember the last time I did that for any woman.

Usually, I didn’t have to work hard to get women into bed. I didn’t even have to approach them. They approached me. One thing led to another. I had a reputation back in London. Everyone there knew that I wasn’t like any mayor they’d had before. I enjoyed spending time with beautiful women. I liked taking them to bed.

Thankfully, it was the modern age, so I only went through a little bit of criticism here and there. No one chastised me for not being a prude.

But with those women, I had a goal in mind. I wanted to see the sight of my cock going into their bodies.

With Nicole, I wasn’t sure what my endgame was.

I sensed her before I saw her. She was wearing the same clothes she had on that morning in the bookstore, but there was a coat over her shirt now. A jacket, actually. A black jacket. A hard look to pull off, but she was doing it. My cock shifted a little in my pants upon seeing her.

Her hair, however, which was previously tied back in a ponytail when she was in the store, was now flowing freely down her shoulders. It was a fascinating color of dirty blonde. I felt a sudden compulsion to run my hands through it.

Enough, Nathan. Get a fucking grip, mate.

“There you are,” I said, appearing to be smooth and detached. “No trouble getting here?”

“No trouble,” Nicole replied. She came to a stop a few feet ahead of me. “So where are we going?”

“Upstairs.”

Her cheeks reacted faster than the rest of her. The red tint. She was blushing. I loved making her do that.

“Upstairs?” she said shakily. “You don’t want to go out?”

It does’t take a scientist to know what she was worried about. She thought by “upstairs,” I meant I was taking her up to have sex.

“There’s a surprise for you on the roof,” I said, letting her know that my bedroom wasn’t on my mind.

“The roof?”

At this rate, it was just going to be question after question. “It would be easier if I just showed you,” I said, turning to walk towards the elevators.

Author Bio:

I’m a guy who likes to cut right to the chase, so here we go: I’m a male author of Romance/Erotica novels that are told entirely from the POV of the male protagonist. If you enjoy happy endings and steamy tales about people falling in love quickly, my stories are for you.

Exclusive Excerpt:

“I can’t fucking stand that sound. Do you really have to make so much noise when you laugh?”

The memory of his voice rings loud in my head, like an album stuck on repeat. An oversize tub and bubbles are my therapy. Sometimes I light candles and pour a glass of wine while I just sit. Finding solace in the darkness. It’s quiet here. The water is my fortress. I sink down into its depths, letting it wrap me in the security of its warmth.

“You’re overreacting. You sound like a crazy person right now.”

The scent of sweet cashmere washes away the worries of the day and drowns out the static in my head. Voices that try to convince me I’m worthless, crazy… lost. The little girl that used to dance around her room using a baton as a microphone as she pretended to be Madonna disappeared a long time ago. The confident young woman that graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in business hides behind baggy sweatshirts and messy buns. And all that’s left of the energetic girlfriend that used to find joy in making beauty out of everyday yardwork and laughing at her own jokes is a perfectly fabricated smile that lets the world know everything is okay. Even when it isn’t.

“Why did the whale cross the ocean?”

It was a simple joke. Meant to make him smile after a long day. He looked across the dinner table, over the top of his still full plate of chicken parmesan, and his eyes met mine. Lifeless and dull. He wasn’t amused. All I wanted was to make him smile.

“To get to the other tide.”

The words had barely left my lips when I started laughing. Childlike and uncontrollable. Maybe it was the tension rolling off his shoulders, or maybe it was the fact that he’d not spoken three words to me since he walked through the door. But I needed to laugh. I needed to escape the negativity, if just for a second. I laughed so hard my sides started to burn and my eyes started to water. I had to set my fork down on the freshly polished surface of the solid wood dining table to keep from hurting myself. The laughter spilled from my mouth without hesitation and then it happened. I snorted. The moment I did it I knew it was a mistake. His blue eyes narrowed and he glared at me.
“I can’t fucking stand that sound,” he said.
The laughter turned to tears as he slammed his silverware down, nearly cracking the ceramic plate. I didn’t mean to cry. It just… came out. Like my body was mourning its ability to laugh. That’s when he told me I was overreacting, acting crazy, that he didn’t mean it the way I was making it seem.
That conversation took place two years ago. I haven’t laughed since. Not out loud anyway. Not like that. So, on days when the silence is deafening, I come here. To my bubble-filled haven. And I tune it all out. I search for the woman I used to be, wondering if she’s still in there somewhere or if she got trapped in the quicksand. I wonder if she fought for so long to get out that it finally just consumed her. And now there’s nothing left. Just the quicksand.

Besides working her dreaded day job, looking after her family, and attending college full-time to obtain her bachelor’s degree, she enjoys getting lost in her imagination, coming up with tantalizing, steamy, and just pretty much over-the-top romance novels for her readers to devour.

BLURB:

A powerful alpha wolf. A gifted witch. Each haunted by death. Can passion drive them to an everlasting love? Or will the enemy forge a hopeless chasm?
Braden should have died in the Graveyard, but the witch, Maeve, saved him. The call of his wolf is on him and he wants her. She can be his alpha-mate. But she has powers that can destroy him and a disrupted memory that holds the answers to his wife’s murder. Can he ever trust a woman who can kill with the power she streams from her bare hands?

Maeve has known only horror, death and destruction since her arrival in Five Bridges as a transformed alter witch. She goes to the Graveyard nightly to rescue those left for dead by the evil rampant in all five territories of her new world. She fears the power she possesses and the gaps in her memory frighten her more than anything else. But when she rescues Braden from an attack in the Graveyard and she realizes she’s drawn to the handsome wolf, the nightmare really begins.

EXCERPT:

Maeve held Braden’s fur tight. She didn’t want to let him go. The moment he’d pushed her onto the floor in his massive wolf state, desire exploded. Somehow, all that black fur and the sight of his fangs got to her.

She knew then he’d spoken the truth. Though she was a witch, she could bond with this Border Patrol officer and serve as his alpha female.

Slowly, he shifted back to his human form, a seamless process reflecting his decade in Five Bridges. She released his fur as it disappeared through her fingers.

His green eyes held hers tight. She couldn’t have looked away if she’d wanted to. He said, “I need you to understand what you’re getting into here. This will be without one shred of emotion. What happens here is strictly physical, very physical. I have no interest in you otherwise, despite your alpha-mate capacity.”

She smiled. “Got it. No strings and yes, I’m game.”

He leaped to his feet, reached down and plucked her off the floor like she was feather. He lifted her into his arms then carried her into the bedroom, slamming the door shut with his foot.

She’d been wanting this for weeks. Months, maybe.

He took her to the bed but before he let go of her, he pulled the covers back. Then he dropped her so she bounced on the mattress.

She would have been happy to get her clothes off, but he went to work like a madman. He tugged off her shoes and jeans, then flipped her onto her stomach.”

“You’ve got a beautiful ass, Maeve…”

MY REVIEW:

5 wings

I think this was my favorite one so far. I loved The Landing and could totally see a series there (hint hint). Maeve is such an awesome character!! She’s strong but such a gentle soul. And as usual the male character, Braden, is swoon worthy, and totally a great book boyfriend (I call dibs). This is one of my favorite series; I think it’s because it seems to have everything, romance, paranormal and post-apocalyptic all mixed together. LOVE this world!!!

Author Info:

Hi, Everyone! Caris Roane here! I’m a NY Times Bestselling Author and I write super-sexy paranormal romance books. With every book I create, my goal is to take you away ~ far, far away ~ from the difficulties and frustrations of your life.

I began my career with Kensington Publishing and wrote Regency Romance as Valerie King. In 2005, Romantic Times Magazine honored me with a career achievement award for my Regency work. To-date, I’ve published eighty-nine books. Thirty-nine of those are paranormal romances, some self-published and some with St. Martin’s Press.
Though my stories conjure up hunky PNR warriors, like vampires and wolf-shifters, the romance is everything, including a satisfying Happily Ever After. My hope is that you’ll become engrossed in the lives of my tortured heroes and my worthy women as they wage war, as they make love, and as they face the tough issues of life and relationships!
I live in the Phoenix area, in the city of Buckeye. When not writing, I’m a real homebody. I love gardening, sewing, and cooking. (Um, cleaning, not so much!) I also enjoy creating jewelry and I frequently offer my handcrafted, PNR bracelet giveaways to my newsletter and blog subscribers. You can sign up for both on my Home Page.
My motto: Live the Fang!

Blurb:

A tyrant by day, a playboy by night. That is the reputation that precedes Richard VanRyan. He lives life the way he wants, no concern for the opinion of others. He cares for no one, is completely unrepentant, and he has no desire to change his ways.

Katharine Elliott works under Richard as his PA. She despises him and his questionable ethics, but endures all the garbage he sends her way, because she needs the job. Her end goal is far more important than the daily abuse and demands she tolerates from her nasty tyrant of a boss.

Until the day, he asks her for something she never expected. A new role with a personal contract — fiancée instead of PA.

What happens when two people who loathe each other, have to live together and act as though they are madly in love?

Sparks.

That’s what happens.

Can the power of love really change a person?

Will they survive the contract?

What do you do when the one person you hate the most becomes the one person you can’t live without?

EXCERPT:

“You don’t expect me to sleep in your room,” she stated, sounding relieved.

I smirked at her uncertainty. “Miss Elliott, this is a business arrangement. Outside these walls, we will appear as a couple. We’ll hold hands, stay close, do whatever other couples do who are in love.” I waved my hand in the air. “In here, we are real. You have your space; I have mine. I won’t bother you. I expect nothing from you.” I couldn’t help the dry chuckle that escaped. “You didn’t really think I’d want to sleep with you, did you?”

Her head snapped up, and she glared at me. “No more than I’d want to sleep with you, Mr. VanRyan.” Turning on her heel, she marched down the hall, her footsteps small thumps on the hardwood floor.

I followed her, still smirking. When we reached the living room, she whirled around, her eyes flashing.

“You asked me to do this, Mr. VanRyan. Not the other way around.”

“You agreed.”

She crossed her arms, anger pouring off her body. “I’m doing this, because at the moment, I have no other choice. Your decisions have directly affected my life, and I’m trying to keep up. I hate lying, and I’m not a good actress.”

“What are you saying?”

“If you’re not even going to attempt to be polite, or at least be a decent human being, this isn’t going to work. I can’t turn off my emotions that quickly.”

I pulled on my stubborn cowlick in vexation. “What do you want from me, Miss Elliott?”

“Could we not at least try to get along? Surely we can find something we have in common and engage in a conversation without your veiled insults and holier-than-thou attitude.”

A grin tugged at my lips. I was catching another glimpse of the backbone in Miss Elliott.

I tilted my head. “I apologize. I’ll try to do better. Is there anything else you want since we’re putting everything on the table?”

She hesitated, her fingers worrying the ugly shirt she wore.

“Spit it out.”

“You can’t, um, you can’t mess around while we’re doing . . . while we’re together.”

“Mess around?”

She looked everywhere but at me. “You can’t sleep with other women. I won’t be humiliated like that.”

“So what you’re saying is: I can’t fuck anyone?”

Her cheeks were so red I thought her head would explode; however, she straightened her shoulders and looked right at me. “Yes.”

This was too fun for me.

“Yes, I can fuck around?”

“No!”

“No fucking,” I enunciated the last word.

“No.”

“You expect me to remain celibate the whole time?” I asked, now incredulous.

“I will be, so I expect you to do the same.”

I snorted. “I doubt it’s anything new for you.”

She threw up her hands. “That’s it. You want to fuck someone? Go fuck yourself, VanRyan.”
