In a violet polka dot dress and white sweater, Bertie looked like she should be playing bridge and sipping cocktails with the ladies. She embraced who she was wholeheartedly and without apology, her dedication to her authentic self remained evident.
“How’s it going?” Bertie handed Sal a sweet ginger peach tea and kissed Earl on the cheek.
“Okay,” Sal breathed. His chest muscles swelled from moved his ass to get the roses in before dark. “Is…”
“She’s fine.” The moment Bertie said it, Sal saw Kaci’s bright hair go walking towards the car. “She’s running to town to get some things for dinner. You should come take a rest.” Bertie winked at Sal in an attempt to get Earl to sit down.
“Oh! Ya! I’d love too!” Sal played along, feigning exhaustion. He smirked discreetly at Bertie as she walked next to him.
She glanced over to him, and without a sound from her lips she mouthed, “Thank you.”
At the back of the church, the covered porch stood with several rocking chairs. As Earl made his way inside, Sal parked his rump on the stairs. After Bertie had closed the door for her grandfather, she came up and sat close to Sal.
“Smoke?” she offered.
“Dear god, I’d love one.”
She opened the pack for him, and he slid one out. When he did, Bertie innocuously ran her hand over his back. Her touch sent a shiver through him.
“You’re soaked! Get that shirt off before you catch pneumonia!” Bertie hopped up, running into the house.
With the cigarette between his lips, he unbuttoned his damp shirt and tossed the ball cap off. Sal glanced at Bertie, who had reappeared and was studying him. Handing him a red plaid shirt, she blushed. “It’s easy to see what she sees in you.”
Putting on the shirt, he left it unbuttoned. He chuckled anxiously, “This is just…”
“Not what you expected,” Bertie finished, laying her hand a top his own.
“No. Not at all.” Sal shook his head with a smile and held onto her hand from beneath.
“Stop worrying you are going to offend me and just say what’s on your mind.”
“I don’t think I can to be honest.”
“Sure you can. Open up your mouth and talk to me. I won’t bite,” her words dripped slow like honey. “Stop thinking about my dick that you think I want to use like a man, Sal. That’s just a hiccup.”
Letting all his tension go, Sal laughed—a real, genuine laugh. “Are you going to…finish?”
Bertie caught his moss colored eyes with her own sparkling stormy grayish blues. “Am I going to have surgery? Probably one day. It’s not real high on my priority list at the moment. Granddad is dying.”
Heavy with emotional turmoil, his eyes peered into her soul. “I’m sorry I misjudged you.”
She squatted with her knees together, and reflected an intimate look. “Sal, it’s alright. Chill out. Have fun. Stop stressing. Remember, I…am…harmless.”
Feeling at ease, Sal smirked as her long eyelashes blinked at him.
Before he knew it, Bertie pressed her pretty, red lips against his own. Although his head knew better, he wanted to kiss her back—a full-on Raniero tongue-lashing. But he didn’t give her that for fear of what his fighting pixie would think or do to him. He wanted him and Kaci to work out, so he had to be good. He must keep his mind in check over his eager body.
The kiss was just a kiss. But his eyes were planted firmly on her tight derriere as she walked to the door. Everything about her sent him into overdrive. But he felt he was unobtainable for her, and that just made him hate himself that much more.
Bertie opened the door with a seductive grin, her generous, dark curls luring him in like bait. “Sal, I said I was harmless with Kaci. I didn’t say I would be with you.”
