I was contacted by an author who’s book was reviewed recently on this blog and I just had to share pieces of the conversation (with permission).
Absolute obedience, servitude, neutrality.
These were the laws that once governed Bartholomew, an immortal soulcatcher, until one ill-fated night when he was forced to make a choice: rebel against his masters or reveal an ancient, dangerous secret.
He chose defiance.
Imprisoned for centuries as punishment for his decision, Bartholomew wastes away—until he creates an opportunity to escape. By a stroke of chance, Bartholomew finds himself in the human world and soon learns that breaking his bonds does not come without a price. Cut off from the grace that once ruled him, he must discover a new magic in 1930s Chicago.
Armed with only a cryptic message to give him direction, Bartholomew desperately tries to resume the mission he had started so long ago. Relying on the unlikely guidance of the streetwise orphan Charlie Reese, Bartholomew must navigate the depressed streets of the City in the Garden. But in order to solve this riddle, he must first discover if choice and fate are one in the same.
Where did you get the idea?
First, the inspiration came from the real Irish legend about Jack O’Lanterns. I came across it years ago and I was fascinated that no one had created a grander story for Stingy Jack. From there, it became something much more. I compare the creation of the story to America and how it is a melting pot of elements both in the make up of its mythology as well as its cultural diversity. And although its not as prevalent in Book One, it will progressively expand as the series continues. Also, my goal, when I started was to create an original American Fantasy, that is set apart from the modern/present day form as well as the European archetypes synonymous with high fantasy.
How many books will be in the series?
As for the series length, I can tell you as of now, I have 8 novels already mapped out (I’m currently almost done with 4) that will be apart of the main storyline. Charlie will have a parallel story 2.5 and possibly a second. There are also two companion book I have been working on/conceiving. I know, it’s a lot, haha, apparently I subconsciously wanted to have more books than Harry Potter, but to be fair I have been playing in this universe for about 10 years now and there is so much story to unfold 🙂
Prepare for an odyssey adventure, Midwestern style! Coming soon, June 2017, The Breedling and the Trickster. Book Two in historical fantasy series The Element Odysseys by Kimberlee Ann Bastian.
Kimberlee Ann Bastian has a love affair with American nostalgia, mythology, and endless possibilities. When she is not in her writer’s room or consuming other literary worlds, she enjoys hiking and cycling around the bluffs of her Southeastern MN home and catching up on her favorite pop culture.
