My Review:

I am loving this trilogy and can NOT wait to get my hands on the next book!!! The characters are awesome, so realistic. And you never know what’s going to happen next which keeps your eyes glued to the page. And once the last word has been read you’re stuck with a major hangover. I couldn’t stop thinking about it and what could possibly happen next. As more information is revealed, explanations for events, we’re left hanging as to where it’s going to take us. LOVED IT!!!

Blurb From Goodreads:

Protector of Light, Fiona Farrow, has three new challenges to face: a missing best friend, a power-obsessed demon mage, and a borderline invincible vampire.

After surviving a near blood sacrifice, another of the Sacred Scrolls has been stolen. This time from the head of the Ancient Order of Vampires. But her target isn’t just borderline invincible—he’s incredibly alluring, too.

Her investigation leads her to New York City, where she teams up with two other Protectors to hunt down the vampire faction. Soon, however, Fiona discovers she isn’t the only one looking for the Scroll, and she needs to get to it first … before someone dangerous unlocks its magical powers.

Confronted by every evil faction at every damning turn, Fiona must chose between losing the people she loves most or saving humanity from eternal Darkness.

If you enjoy kick-ass heroines who face down demons, vampires, and shifters, you’ll love Rising Light, the second installment of the hot new urban fantasy series, Armor of Magic.

My Review:

Ooooh, I can’t wait to see what happens next! Fiona has finally jumped on board her destiny but she isn’t a very good team player. She goes off and does her own thing without telling anyone where she’s going or what she has planned. It’s amazing how most of the time it works out, but when it doesn’t…. boy does everything get screwed up. If you haven’t started this series yet you should, it will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end!

My Review:

Great start to a promising series. I really liked Fiona, she’s a bit reckless and headstrong but she won’t back down. She’s somewhat the reluctant hero, having her own plans for her life, Fiona fights the destiny she’s known about but took her parents away. The conflict of choosing between destiny and selfish desires lands her in quite a bit of trouble. Such a fun read and I look forward to the next book!

Summary from Goodreads:

For centuries, the people have lived under the protection of their so-called Dark Lord. Now, with news of his death reaching the quiet village of Everdark, rumour whispers that his son, Lucias, is hunting for a mistress to beget him an heir.

Clara doesn’t put much stock in village gossip, until she finds herself forcibly taken to the Lord’s fortress. Escape is not easy. She has no way out and, against a man with magic, little chance of fighting back. But the Lords are still men and the death of Lucias’ father is proof that they die just the same. And yet, if Lucias dies heirless, his army will be free to terrorise the land.

Such is the goal of Lenora of Ne’ermore, an old enemy and ex-prisoner of the kingdom. She is sending a man to slaughter Lucias and, to ensure there’s no chance of an heir, his mistress must die as well.

Caught between regaining her freedom or losing it for the good of the kingdom, Clara struggles to decide her path before certain death breaches the gates.

Book Trailer:

Excerpt:

An errant tussock, pinned under her other foot, wrapped over her boot. Shuffling along the ground to free herself, she’d almost gotten the toe free when her ankle gave, dropping her face-first onto grass still wet with dew. Rolling unto her back, intent on appraising her throbbing ankle, she slowly became aware of beginning the cold and subtle glide downhill. Her speed increasing with the incline.

Clara scrabbled at the ground, tearing up fistfuls of grass and dirt as she tumbled and slid down the mountainside. One tuft held long enough to slow her down. Another brought her to a stop. She clung to the fragile strands, carefully trying to get her legs under her.

The blades released with a sudden and loud rip, throwing her into a clump of bushes waiting on the slope below.

Hurling the underhanded grass to the ground, she glared up at the towers. Her fingers ached and her knees, no doubt scraped, stung. She wouldn’t have felt less sore if someone had whipped her. Granted there’d be more bleeding, but not by much. It’s all his fault! If only he’d let her be, as he’d done with the others. She didn’t want to be anyone’s mistress, let alone his.

Branches snagged on her hair and clothes as she struggled to free herself. Gritting her teeth, she plucked at them, snapping off what she couldn’t remove to be dealt with later. In any case, Katharina was a far better fit for such a life than her. If he’d just deigned to look at the woman instead of stopping at Clara, he would’ve seen it too.

The steady thud of hooves marching along hard ground reached her over the muted rustle and creaking of branches. Halting all movement, she waited for the sound to fade, hoping the plainness of her skirts would blend with the bushes.

“Quite the tumble you took there.” The owner to the smug voice soon came into view as Lucias nudged the horse to stand before her. He leant forward, an arm resting on the black beast’s neck. “Are you whole?”

Clara glared up at the man. Whilst she’d been attempting to flee, he’d come after her on horseback. And, judging by the sweat-free coat of the animal, quite calmly. The nerve.

About the Author

aldrea-alienMother. Animal lover. Vampire. Fangirl.

Aldrea Alien is a New Zealand author of romantic speculative fiction of varying heat levels.

She grew up on a small farm out the back blocks of a place known as Wainuiomata alongside a menagerie of animals, who are all convinced they’re just as human as the next person (especially the cats). She spent a great deal of her childhood riding horses, whilst the rest of her time was consumed with reading every fantasy book she could get her hands on and concocting ideas about a little planet known as Thardrandia. This would prove to be the start of The Rogue King Saga as, come her twelfth year, she discovered there was a book inside her.

Aldrea now lives in Upper Hutt, on yet another small farm with a less hectic, but still egotistical, group of animals (cats will be cats). She still hasn’t yet found an off switch to give her an ounce of peace from the characters plaguing her mind, a list that grows bigger every year with all of them clamouring for her to tell their story first. It’s a lot of people for one head.

Excerpt:
She desperately needed to speak to her friend. Not that a tokota could speak, that would be crazy, Noelle thought to herself with a laugh. But he was certainly a great listener.
Marric and Noelle’s relationship dated back to one winter morning when Noelle was fifteen and she came upon a lost small black and white wolf-looking pup. The little furry ball yipped and ran over to Noelle and they had been friends every since.
A snort greeted Noelle from behind her. She turned with a smile, finding a large black figure standing behind her.
Marric.
That small fur ball had grown into a massive alpha tokota. Marric was well muscular and with each step that he took toward Noelle, she could see the predator in him. But she knew that he would never hurt her. Tokota’s were very loyal to their companions. He was a massive beast that could easily accommodate her on his back as a passenger.
“It took you long enough,” she murmured as he pushed his snout into her hand. “Well, hello to you too,” she said with a laugh.
Another snort at her comment. She ignored it, allowing a large grin to spread across her face as she ruffled her fingers through his fur. She knew he was looking for the treats that she always brought.
“I have a problem, Marric,” she admitted. He pulled back and his dark eyes settled on her. He sat back on his hind legs, ready to listen to her. “My birthday is coming up. December twenty-fifth, I’ll be turning thirty. Do you know what that means?”
Marric cocked his head to the side as if waiting for her to answer. Of course he didn’t know the workings of the laws of Faery. She sighed and shook her head.
“According to the laws of Faery, I must marry. My father, the king, will be having the Royal Tournaments to find a husband for me. Males from all over Faery will come to compete in the tournaments to win my hand in marriage. You would think that this was the medieval times. This is the twenty-first century.  A young Fae woman should be able to decide when it’s time for her to get married, not the governing body of our realm.”
Marric’s eyes didn’t waiver from Noelle as she spoke. Even without words, Noelle felt comforted by her friend’s presence. Maybe it was the chance to get her worries out in the open and off her chest that gave her relief, but deep down, Noelle was sure that it was Marric.
“But I’m sure that you’re just bored with my complaints,” she said with a hard laugh. She let loose a giggle as Marric butted her with his head. She wrapped her arms around his large neck and buried her head in his thick fur, squeezing tight before she let go.
“Ok, I’ll do it. For my family. For Faery,” she whispered, accepting what her family needed from her and what Faery would need from her.

Blazing #BlogTour: Songs of Seraphina by Jude Houghton

Songs of Seraphina
Jude Houghton
Publication date: June 30th 2015
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

Some battles bleed so much, and for so long, that the earth never truly forgets their dead. Some battles are born of oppression, and some of greed, and some simply because it was written in the stars.

Three sisters—Charlemagne, Cairo and Pendragon Agonistes—are sent from America to England to live with their eccentric grandparents after their mother disappears and their father falls to pieces. But before the girls have time to find their feet, Charlemagne is married off to a dead man, Penny takes a nap and wakes up as a boy, and Cairo is swept into a dangerous romance with a man who wants her for more than her considerable charm. With the girls wrapped up in a conflict they barely understand, they don’t notice that their grandmother is transforming, or that the two demigod assassins who took their mother are now coming for them—if one of them can get over his crisis of conscience.

In this richly painted tale, at whose heart is the unbreakable bond of family and blood, the world of Seraphina collides with our own as three unique girls are dragged into twilight lives past, fighting for vengeance, retribution, and the survival of their exiled people.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / iBooks

Excerpt:

Saffron was at her side, yawning and tired. She was fourteen but sometimes seemed much younger.

“Come on,” said Charlemagne, taking her by the arm.

“But the fireworks are just beginning,” she said, pointing to a shooting red light just over the eastern wall.

That’s strange, why would they light the fireworks over there? Charlemagne’s thoughts lingered for a moment before the eastern gate exploded into splinters. Around her, only a few looked up. Manderlay wine had dulled their senses and most thought the explosion was somehow the beginning of the display. Smoke and ashes rose where the gate once stood. Charlemagne’s head reeled.

It didn’t make sense; only Acrapheans had alembic powder. Nothing else could breach the wall. The blast of a horn filled the air and then knights on destriers rode through the clouds of dust. Their armour was black, their hair as dark as a moonless night.

It was the Fyrd! The knights of Acraphea. They had not been seen here for half a century. The Serendips were the unrivalled masters of the west, the Acrapheans the east, and the Gildas, the south. The three great races on whom, since the war of Sigon, Seraphina’s peace depended. In the watchtower, a sentry rang the bell furiously. He was picked off by an arrow and fell to his death.

If the Lady bestowed on the Serendips the latent ability to influence fate, then the Acraphean’s faith gave them an uncanny foresight. No Serendip ever thought an attack from the east was even possible. A single bridge crossed the great river, linking the perimeter of the city with the town.

Against barbarians, the gate to the bridge could be defended for days by a dozen men in sentry towers. Against Fyrd knights and no gate, and with the entire city half drunk on manderlay, the defences fell apart. The garrison of Thegns was shot down even as they ran to the ramparts. The destriers charged the bridge four abreast.

Charlemagne’s lord roused himself. He was in a daze, only just beginning to understand what was happening. Carabrienne’s “red war” had come.

Musically Yours – How Music Defines Characters

Think back to your teen years. Isn’t there a song or two from the time period that sticks with you and helps you relive those magical moments? I was recently tasked with creating a playlist for the main characters in my new book Wear White to Your Funeral. Going through the process, I realized how music helps an author define characters above and beyond the way classic characterization works and gives the readers a way to relate to unfamiliar situations.

A musically gifted coworker helped me choose the correct songs for Bowen, my teenage, male protagonist. I had two songs with the word “kiss” in the title and he told me to remove them. No self-respecting teenage boy would have a playlist with them on it. On the other hand, I disagreed with his recommendation of Taylor Swift for Rory, the female, teenage protagonist, believing Swift’s music too young for her. In both cases, using music added depth and layers to my characters and helped me envision them in ways I had not prior to putting my playlist together.

But this is not new. Authors have and continue to use music in creative ways. Music defines characters, creates symbols and motifs, connects readers to characters and situations, and expresses mood in ways words cannot.

Music provides readers with insight into what motivates and sustains a character. In A Streetcar Named Desire, the main character, Blanche, sings “Paper Moon” in the bathtub. The song, about turning what is real into a lush fantasy, helps clarify how Blanche is unable to deal with and accept her current, less than prosperous situation. Polka music and jazz are also used to set the mood and juxtapose Blanche’s past and guilt over her husband’s death with her present, gritty reality in the city.

Similarly, music connects readers to characters and themes in literature. In Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, humans are believed to be more empathetic than their android counterparts and, therefore, able to appreciate the beauty in art and music. Luba Luft, an android who sings opera, comes across with more empathy than the human whose job it is to destroy her. This is due to Luft’s pure joy when discussing the music she sings.

Typically, authors consider how characters look, what they say, what they do, what they think, and what others say about them. Music can add insight into the inner workings of a character, including emotions, likes and dislikes, and even their stance on love, life, and politics while helping connect an audience to them.

Flashes of the silver car I’d been in a million times flew by in my mind, spliced in with another image—of the body I’d just seen at the bottom of the ravine. I kept seeing it over and over like a trailer for the latest horror movie. But it wasn’t some actress in a film. It was my best friend’s lifeless body at the bottom of that rocky cliff. The stark image taunted me: large, jagged boulders breaking out from a coating of pure white snow forever marked with her blood—her body, splayed across them, crooked and broken.
